Guys,
Anyone familiar with "swirl painting" like used on Guitars?

WELL in a hobby forum I just joined, I seen it on some brand "X" cars (GREAT for trials and ERRORS) BUT, I want to try it on a Mopar! I am just not sure how I want to go about it.....

Anyone here, paint their own cars, models or the real thing? OR know someone who has painted up a guitar such in the same manner? I've got to try.......... I'm crazy enough to try anything once, this, is no different, and if I LIKE it, I'll be doing more then once! LOL

I'd love to see a swirl painted 70 Super Bee, or hell just the Coronet, in Plum Crazy Purple, and Banana Yellow! MORE Purple, then yellow tho!

What ya think? Insane or not?

Hey man, I think it would looks really cool, just anything but stereotypes, thanks!

It remains to be seen about the insane part. ;)

Rob,
Insane? What ya mean? To be or not to be?

Hmmmmm I'll leave it at that! LOL

Insane is only driving MY truck in the city....

NOT insane is driving through 6 feet deep mudd in 2 wheel drive to then only hooker 'er in gear and go like hell! Love the mud rooster tail, don't ya know off all 4 wheels!

Swirl concept ,on guitars.....

That would look really cool done with the body lines.

i think on a rounder body without defined lines (think VW bug) that would work. That said if you did that on a 68 dart you could do it from the top "edge" across the hood and decklid, then vinyl top.

I'm gonna to try it guys, no doubt about it. I just AM NOT doin my "first" swirlie, as a Mopar!!!!!! I want to get the whole task down to a science first. THEN I'll do up a nice MOPAR LOL

I'm thinkin of the "Mopar Colors" and seeing what I like the "togetherness" of first....Needless to say, I got me some paint collecting from Testors! LOL

If you get to the point, I would start with pints in basecoat,or water based on a single fender .Just my opinion....

Ohh yeah, the sad part is..... I have to use oil based paints! water based paint will not "float" so.....Besides, BEFORE I get into this, I'm going to practice a few pieces of junk first, like Chevy and Ford stuff, or basic sheet plastic that I have laying around the shop. Once I'm familiarized to the whole thing, I will then try a car that's not junk, but not one of my nice Mopar models.....I'm not going to swirl a Mopar till I'm comfortable with doing it......

I can't imagine a process short of a crane over a backyard pool.

Bruce, as much as I love the painting aspect, doing something in real life withthis sort of paint, well.......... I'd need a bigger facility and a rather large amount of Borax! LMAO!!!!

Altho, I bet that be some damn paint job.......I've love to have the ability to see it happen to a real car!

Caleb,
No updates as of yet.....I am working the body of the model to get it ready.......... I'm going to be doing a '70 Challenger TA that I turned to an R/T....

The body on this one is going to be.......... YELLOW! LOL notice the paint seen here is flat. thats a "base" coat of "color" to try and do a 3 phase type paint on a model yellow base coat (flat) then a gloss "swirl" color (Plum Crazy Purple) and then a good coat of high gloss clear coat Lacquer. While I've been "working" the paint on the body, I've also between times (while thats drying) been building a frame and adding a motor that well.........didn't come with the car, took out the 340 and shoehorned in a 426 Hemi that, if you look closely, is/has an aluminum block (painted that is).....As I seen a Hemi that was I think a 528 or something HUGE that was all aluminum, and had Hemi Orange valve covers and just liked how it looked! SO....I had to try it....

This whole car is something "Different" so.....Not just the motor, but the body color too! AND its got a Shaker coming through the hood!

Yeah, when its ready, its gonna be something I think... not to everyone's "liking" but, its for me to enjoy.....I'm sure a few purists are gonna **** their pants as I took out the 340 to add in a non-factory Hemi thats all Aluminum, but...... just something different to look at I guess!

Plus the reversed colors, Orange valve covers instead of Chrome or Aluminum ones and then the Aluminum block instead of the Hemi Orange one.....Yeah I did a flip-flop....AND just to add to the mix, I have a shaker hood and scoop to go over it all! I think I may do the shaker hood scoop in purple with a yellow swirl tho, again flip-flop the colors just to kinda make it all different, BUT I haven't thought that far ahead yet!

Hmm... You mean the purists kick up about ppl changing MODELS to something not packaged as?? Maybe if it was a super super rare one but its a model...

Caleb,
Yeah sort of.... See the '70 Challenger I did this too was a Challenger 340 TA, the old one! NOT the new released one, it was red plastic when I opened it....Was new "old" stock at a local antique shoppe that I go too once in awhile as I know the owner....BUT, I got it for a good deal, (I traded off some old stuff, I had collected up (old glass door knobs and crap from a junk pile) and they were worth a little bit so....I got a good "trade" on models he had "in store".... But anyway, I just got to thinking of all the models made, of the 1970 Dodge Challenger, EVERY ONE of them were made with a "340" no other motor! AND I might add here that the 340, is one one of 2 small block Mopar engines made to regular kit use. not aftermarket stuff.....The other small block is the 273 that was offered by Lindberg with the 1965 A-100 that was made originally as the "Little Red Wagon". Kind of like, the 426 Hemi and the 440 6 pack or 6 barrel......in models they're over used! You ALWAYS see one or the other and in some cases include 2 complete motors of both the 426 Hemi and the 440.....I mean I don't know about you, but I like a little variety, specifically when I know Ma Mopar made more then just these couple engines for these model companies to use.....Lindberg tho, got a good go at it tho. they offered the 425 Max-Wedge, the 440 Wedge, Super Commando, AND the Commando 273, as well as the 426 Hemi, and the slant 6....The Slant 6 being one of the more difficult ones to find!

So I took the '70 Challenger and made it to have a Hemi, one of the aftermarket versions but. the whole car isn't going to be "factory" so.....Kinda all goes together in an odd backwards sort of way! Which now, I want to find "R/T" decals to add to it for the sake of swapping the engine from a small block to the big block.....

Are you insane? Yes. Because other than the guitar example that Tim posted, you have yet to post anything remotely tellin us WTF you're talkin about.
