best coolant flush?

I'm just looking for a way to get my cooling system squeaky clean as it just turns coolant brow. yes I run distilled water antifreeze 50/50 mix. This is on my '74 D100 with the stock radiator. Shoulda done this before summer, but stupid is as stupid does. This is my daily driver so I'd like something that isn't gonna wreak havoc or cost mucho moneys.

Best way I know is to take the thermostat out, and flush it forwards and backwards with the hose at full blast, maybe pop the coolant plugs in the block and let it floooooow. Take the rad out and swish it around a bit, rinse/repeat.

Vinegar. Take the thermostat out and put a gallon of white distilled vinegar in. Drive for a week then flush.

Anyone use CLR?

I've been seeing TV ads claiming how safe it is to use on coffee pots etc...

My Satellite has all sorts of toothpaste thick crap in the block, behind those plugs.

Hey Pan, did you flush the heater core?

I had to put a pressure washer in my heater hoses and flush both ways through the core alternating about a minute each way for (ready) 45 MINUTES before the water ran clear in my Dakota.

I also started using a "corrosion inhibitor" instead of water.
Advance Auto has it for $2 a gallon, but not at all stores.

I pulled the thermostat and filled it with CLR. Ran it for about 50 miles and parked it for a week. Flushed it both ways with the hose and was amazed at the crud on the driveway.

I bought 5 lb of citric acid on ebay to use a flush, especially for the radiator. It is used in cooking. That is the active ingredient in many retail flushes like Prestone's.

Reverse System Power Flush! with compressed air and water at you favorite radiator shop. This is the only way to do it. Every two years get it done and change your antifreeze, thermostat and rad cap.
Save your money on the prestone flush at your local lube shop, take your girl out for a good dinner instead.
