8 3/4 info

hi,have a 73 duster,want to put in a 8 3/4 from a 66-67 b-body.i could not find the thread on this info,any help? thanks,mark
 
cut off the springs pads, sit it on the springs and new pads, center it, install u-bolts and semi-tighten, sit hotrod on all fours on the floor, set pinion angle at 5-7 degrees to driveshaft, tack weld, jack hotrod back up on stands and remove rear, finish welding, put back in hotrod, buy wheels with the correct back spacing.
 
you could make life easier and install a 8 3/4 that came out of an a body.

Or, if you have fab skills, save a ton of money by switching to... a b body rear. Cheap and plentiful. Or c body axles. I had to pretty much give mine away in the past.

A big bolt pattern 73 Duster might make that not so easy.

You can drop the 66-67 rear in without moving the perches, yeah the perches are 1/2" further apart, been done a ton of times. Hillbilly it, spread the springs and run it. It's better to move the perches.
 
a body rears not so cheap around here when you can find them.i have two 66-67 ones so i planed on going this way.thanks for all the input,mark
 
It's an easy swap, I put one in my 74 Dart Sport. I moved the perches in 1/2" on each side and re-welded them, bolted it in and I'm running 10" wide wheels with a 5 1/2" backspace. Works great.

Also your e brake cable will fit, but you need to back off the adjuster under the front seat to allow a bit more slack in the cable to compensate for the larger brakes. I was puzzled when I tried to put mine back together and one side hooked up but the other side was a couple inches short. I just loosened the adjuster and hooked it up, and re-adjusted it, perfect.


What I did, when moving the perches, I took a straight edge and placed it against the end of the perch and scored a line a little further in, and lined the perch up with it and welded it back on. My pinion angle seems perfect too, no vibration.

When welding take your time, don't concentrate the heat in one area too long, it can distort the tube.

You can pull the springs out and it will work, I would not do that personally because it adds side stress on the spring eyes and the bushings and bolts.
