I bought a Schumacher wiper pivot seal kit for my 71 Demon, and struggled for quite a while to get the water seals on. Then I came up with a solution which worked so well, it now seems obvious.

The instructions included in the Schumacher kit say not to use a mechanical spreading device, but I figured that if I could find a tapered shaft, I could use it to stretch the seal gradually and evenly, and then transfer the seal to the pivot assembly.

I tried to find a caulking gun tip or a plastic funnel, but couldn't dig those items up. Turns out a small Home Depot screwdriver was just right.

P.S. - My hat is off to anyone who has ever installed these seals using only their hands!

Genius... i am about to do this myself so THANK YOU. Also, did you add the grease fittings?

Glad to help!

Yes, I did add the grease fittings. One thing that did concern me though was the possibility that drilling can cause metal chips can get into the assembly. I did my best to blow the chips away as I drilled. Hopefully it won't be a problem.

Where do the grease zerks actually go?

Yeah, show some pics of that too please, now that the pics are rollin'.
Good idea, i used dish soap on mine and they went on easier than non lubed.
Your idea seems better, no chance of them getting ripped.

I used dish soap as well...I don't think I could have done it without, even with the tapered shaft. Can't imagine how anybody installs the seals just by hand (with soap or not)

Good solution, wish I would have thought of that. Here is a video link for how I did it. There was another guy on you tube that talked about doing it this way but it didn't actually show, so... here ya go.

As far as the fittings went, I installed, but didn't think they fit all that well. I didn't think the press fit grabbed all that well. But they are in and greased!

Would soaking the seals in hot water help in putting them on? I've done that to nylon gaskets and it helps.

I was going to give the hot water a try, but then I thought about using the tapered shaft and that did the trick. I imagine that the hot water would help, but I'd probably burn my hands in the process. ;)

Plus, you'd probably have to work quickly before the seal cooled down.

I like your solution, too. I never thought to put the seal on the table, I was trying to push it down over the shaft. Yours is another idea so good that it seems obvious - after the fact!

Did you put any gasket sealer on top of the base gaskets?

That's how i did it too, great vid!
Oh, and welcome to FABO!

Yea, I just used the black seal putty per the instruction sheet. A good picture of it is shown in clifcuda65's post (he also had a cool similar way to yours with the tapered idea):

Okay, so no additional gasket sealer then? The Schumacher instructions say to use gasket cement on the base gasket "to hold in place", but that's on the underside - they don't mention anything on the top of the base gasket other than the strip caulk.

I gotcha, no, i didn't use any. Probably overlooked it, but haven't had any issues either. I think that's just to help hold it in place more than for a sealer.

This was a timely post. I just finished my wiper pivots. Your technique worked great! Thanks for the tip.

Thanks for the pics of the grease zerk location. One more question, where is everyone getting the wiper seal kits from? Im wanting to order one

Very simple solution to keep metal chips out of where they don't belong. Fill the flutes of the drill bit with wheel bearing grease. It will catch every chip that comes out, even if you are drilling straight down. Works like a charm.

This is a good tip. Much better than my tongue.
