Santa's Hemi----------SLEIGH?????

So, I'll start off with......

Santas_Hemi_Sleigh_detail.jpg

This ----^

IS the inspiration for whats to follow in this build thread of mine!

Christmas_Hemi_Sleigh_001_detail.jpg

Well, I'll leave ya with this one for now.....This model as you'll see is for a contest, I entered that will be built, as the month of November approaches December, judging is on December 1st....

So then...

Christmas_Hemi_Sleigh_000_detail.jpg

As you see this is purdy big....Anyone GUESS what they are?

Hows 'bout I show ya!

Christmas_Hemi_Sleigh_002_detail.jpg

Heads "look" big enough?

Also just another HEADS up............. this seen here ARE MY CASTINGS! :D

Just to get everyone's "attention"...................

Christmas_Hemi_Sleigh_003_detail.jpg

EVERYONE, remember with me, almost ANYTHING is possible! I scratchbuild like no other, and this is one fine example of that. this whole build is actually scratchbuilt, with absolutely NO plans what-so-ever! Scary part of that? Is the fact that with no plans "winging it" means it can go in ANY direction, at ANY given time!

So far, the engines, are my castings, this would include, the engine block, transmission, the heads and the valve covers, the blowers are left overs I had, and the blower "saddles" that sits between the heads, and the bottom of the blower is a machines piece of plastic that I made glued together multiple layers of plexiglass to get the "look" as I had NO blower saddles to fit these engines, or even the blowers to even think of modifying them to try to use them, so.....I made my own. THEN the pulleys, I had them matching, I used them from a left over kit. The details that are coming........OMG, I'm about to unleash serious power on this build, so, STOP talkin John and post some updated pics would ya!!!!????? I can hear ya all now! :D

Christmas_Hemi_Sleigh_004_detail.jpg

Christmas_Hemi_Sleigh_005_detail.jpg

Christmas_Hemi_Sleigh_006_detail.jpg

WHAT? You thought I'd just "modify" a existing frame to hold these beasts? Not in a million years! Ole John has to make EVERYTHING seemingly difficult so, I scratchbuilt the damned frame too! B-| Wouldn't be me, if I didn't!

THEN.......Those who know me, know me well... seeing these as they are, you know I CAN'T STAND leaving things alone it HAS to be detailed......

Here comes the detail people..... :D

Christmas_Hemi_Sleigh_008_detail.jpg

Not sure if ya can see it well, BUT in the front of the engine there is the distributor to each of the 2 engines, they're MSD clones I made, they were turned on my lathe from a solid plastic sink plunger handle that I found for 2 bucks a 3 foot handle at a local bargain "close-out" store........ Yeah, I bought a few, they turn real well in the lathe for some such things and they also glue well with ALL plastic glues I have, Ambroid, Tenax 7R, Plastruct, Testors, Super Glue, Crazy Glue, you name it, it all works on this plastic! AND it turns so well, I look for it all the time for this very reason! The only waste? The plunger head! :D

Makes NICE parts tho!

Christmas_Hemi_Sleigh_009_detail.jpg

Christmas_Hemi_Sleigh_010_detail.jpg

Shows a good picture of the Distributors! ----^

Christmas_Hemi_Sleigh_011_detail.jpg

The silver "Valve Cover Breathers" are turned aluminum rod, that I just held onto 1 inch long slugs for some such project needing something pretty small, one section is all it took to make all 4 of them!

Christmas_Hemi_Sleigh_012_detail.jpg

Christmas_Hemi_Sleigh_013_detail.jpg

NICE detail work going in and coming out to be seen from my camera! Took some advice from a fellow forum member here and hes right! The wire looms I'm using, they look GREAT, even tho I can use the Photo-Etched ones, the heat shrink tubing, looks and works really well! (He KNOWS, who he is!) Thanks guy!

ENJOY, more to come as I build!

So, a few pics to add for an update.....

Christmas_Hemi_Sleigh_014_detail.jpg

I made a template for the body of the.......sleigh, and so here you see the card stock used and the hand drawn contours of whats to come......

Christmas_Hemi_Sleigh_015_detail.jpg

Here that template is, traced onto the plastic sheet. The WHOLE body of this model, WILL BE scratchbuilt to suit the needs of the jolly ole fat man to ride in.....

Like always with me, more pictures to come as progress is made!

So those messages are over. see the following SLEIGH, body as it is standing in place for a mock-up....

Christmas_Hemi_Sleigh_016_detail.jpg

Christmas_Hemi_Sleigh_019_detail.jpg

Looks pretty damn good from here for ole Santa!

The seat, is from a '41 Plymouth, that I just got on trade, HOWEVER, because of the tendency of my own self, I built the sleigh around THAT seat, I wasn't happy with the work needed to the seat for this project, tosses it back in the box with the complete model, pulled out my NEW model of the same car, and assembled just THAT seat from the new '41 Plymouth coupe to use and will use bucket seats in the new kit when I build it but use the bench seat for this build! :D

A lot of work but, with this build, I got some STEEP competition to get around. To win anyway. see what I have on a limited supply of parts and time! :D

ENJOY!

P.S. there IS a "SECRET" to this build NOT yet seen! jaw-dropping-smiley-emoticon
jaw-dropping-smiley-emoticon.gif

OK 'nuff said! Here comes that update!!!!!!!!!!!

Christmas_Hemi_Sleigh_020_detail.jpg

Sleigh........ is now getting paint! MOPAR ENGINE RED!!!!!! (Gotta keep it ALL Mopar...RIGHT!?) :D

Christmas_Hemi_Sleigh_029_detail.jpg

Seen this side is the "green" starter wires....And yes, they do get "buried" into the frame!!!!

Christmas_Hemi_Sleigh_028_detail.jpg

Showing details.....The "White" frame is painted, it has BOTH engine mounted to it as well as the odd looking transmission.....The coil wires in place, seen here, running to the alternator, thats also operated by that odd transmission! :D

Christmas_Hemi_Sleigh_026_detail.jpg

Over all of this side.....The frame is complete, NOW getting details from the front.. to the BACK.....

THE SECRET IS COMING!

So.. remember back when I first started this? And said a few postings ago that there was a secret? WELL to PROVE its not something recent.. here is that proof............

Christmas_Hemi_Sleigh_007_detail.jpg

Christmas_Hemi_Sleigh_018_detail.jpg

NOTICE, it has a TRACK, not a TANK track, NOT a bulldozer track. but a SNOWMOBILE TRACK!!!!! Its been planned all along! BUT I added my own little twist to this detail.....

Christmas_Hemi_Sleigh_031_detail.jpg

Christmas_Hemi_Sleigh_023_detail.jpg

I SPLIT IT DOWN THE CENTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
nerwth_bf-devilsmiley.gif

Double the traction for the deeper snow right?

Christmas_Hemi_Sleigh_024_detail.jpg

Can't forget those "Monster Truck" details, right? WRONG! The jack shaft from a USA-1 that I just happened to have lying around the shop, WHAT BETTER place then to put it from that (Here we go again) ODD transmission to the front drive differential of the Snowmobile track! :D

Christmas_Hemi_Sleigh_025_detail.jpg

AND thats the end folks! This is all that will be seen when that Jolly ole Fat man dressed in red throws a bit of fuel to the ole gas powered rein..............................................HEMI's!!!!!!!!!!
happy-dancing.gif

More to come and YET another "Secret" to be revealed when the time is right!

ENJOY!

'Nuther update for last nights work............. RUNNERS! YEP, those white things that are this way that way are just FRAMES for the "runners" to mount too!

Cut and bent to shape by me.....NICE "Gold Trim" to go with it! :D

Christmas_Hemi_Sleigh_032_detail.jpg

Showing the curly cues up in the front!

Christmas_Hemi_Sleigh_033_detail.jpg

A side shot sowing they run the full length of the frames.....with a slight toe up in the back!

Christmas_Hemi_Sleigh_034_detail.jpg

Looking "down on" the whole works! With the track in place and the red center of the rollers guide wheels repainted to Mopar Sassy Grass Green for the Christmas colors in order.....

Christmas_Hemi_Sleigh_035_detail.jpg

Another "rear" of the unit....Getting ready to mount the track in place!

:D ENJOY!

So guys another update coming your way for the good of "viewing"....

Got a few more "details" added to make it just a bit more..........realistic?

Yeah that sounds about right for me!

Christmas_Hemi_Sleigh_040_detail.jpg

Seen here is the custom made radiator, mounted horizontal, for the space it needs to fit, and the "RED" radiator hoses to it from each motor! This radiator as seen, is 2 sided.....front engine would pass into one radiator and the thought through the mounts to the lower one, WILL get pictures of that when I'm able....Took these as it was setting to dry from this and other details your about to see, drying to give it some time!

Christmas_Hemi_Sleigh_041_detail.jpg

Over all of this side.....

Christmas_Hemi_Sleigh_042_detail.jpg

NICE green floor with some green accents on the seat! :D

Christmas_Hemi_Sleigh_043_detail.jpg

Showing the green "dash". a few needed details for this before I'm all said and done with it.....

Also not mentioned is the fact that the track is finally stationary to the frame, as well as any other parts under the "sleigh" body.....I'm currently working on the sleigh mounts to hold it to the frame under it....I also have a few pieces to make for the sleigh yet as well, I'll keep them to myself for now!

Christmas_Hemi_Sleigh_036_detail.jpg

ENJOY! :D

OK 'nuff, of this..... You know why? I got 2 of whats said to be Mopar "610 Hemi's" and the part that gets me? I have NEVER looked up what the actual "internal specs" were to pass along to the Elves that will be working on this to keep it going for many years to come for ole Santa! So with that......

Here is some specs for those tiny little Elves to her moving when Santa needs something more for bad weather and the Reindeer are tired, (After-all they are getting old!!!!!!)

Bore = 5.09
Stroke = 3.75
Over Bore =0.0
Over Stroke =0.0
Cylinders = 8
Cubic Inches = 610.445224713523
Litres = 10.0035269441608

THEN to remember there ARE 2 of these! SO....

"1220" C.I.D.
"20 Liter"

Sounds like a whole lot of "Go like hell" to me!

So, another "update" to what ole Hemi has been up to for this build.....:D

Sometimes, with me, you just NEVER know where any one item is going during the build....SO, with that said, I'm about to show some sleigh "trim"....

Christmas_Hemi_Sleigh_048_detail.jpg

Christmas_Hemi_Sleigh_045_detail.jpg

I thought the gold look trim that is a "piping" look to it, (those of you that have done REAL car restoration know what I mean here) But piping, as such as seat "piping" type trim. I think for the sleigh it turned out the GREATEST look for the model... as planned too! I could NOT have thought of a better way to do it!

Christmas_Hemi_Sleigh_046_detail.jpg

This shot, shows some "extra" trim I added....That gold trim that looks like "pipe" it sort of is, its solid brass! I turned it and then polished it, IT will be gloss coated BEFORE its all said and done with for the fact that unprotected it will turn green! :D So, I've got a few tricks for it up my sleeves to keep it nice and shiny!

Notice the 2 "holes" going through the front of the front of the sleigh.....PAY attention to these! They're a "secret" part of the build! As you'll see as I progress!

Christmas_Hemi_Sleigh_044_detail.jpg

A bit of a close up for this side (I have to admit) I haven't taken many pictures of this side, and its not cause I have more to do to it or anything, BUT the side that I'm working on or from is normally the side I get my pictures from!

Christmas_Hemi_Sleigh_049_detail.jpg

Showing a bit of the "rear" of how it is now, for the sleigh, BUT its possibly going to change just a little bit! BUT that too, is in question, Not sure the planned change, is gonna happen!

Christmas_Hemi_Sleigh_050_detail.jpg

Interior shot. Showing a bit more then my past "interior" pics....A bit yet to do in here. as you'll see in upcoming updates on this build!

GOING very well, I'm loving how all is turning out to date, nothing is or has been "questioned" in my own head....I'm pleased with it! As I question EVERYTHING like that I build, thats my "Enemy" sometimes when I'm building!

ENJOY

So, a bit of a TYPED update, I go an post pics this morning.. the sleigh all looks GREAT, I'm pleased with everything EVEN a "secret" part, that I had together, looked AWESOME, paint when on it just great, began to add some "trim" shall we say. And the freaking (OTHER choice word here) glue slung down the side of that "secret" part, SO, WHAM...........Ever see a part that has 6 pieces, VERY small hit the table your working on, STILL all in one piece and then thats not "good enough".... so you SLAM your buckled over fist into it, and smear the glue, paint color you name it right into the table edge, and then leaving you with a somewhat smile like you dirty SOB. THEN 5 minutes (literally) latter, I sat my hand in such a way on the table to move something and this red line follows my hand across the wood grain? YEP took 5 minutes for the small scratch to actually "bleed" on my pinky finger, hell, I wouldn't have even known I broke the skin had I not seen the red paint like trail following my hand as I was trying to get the dimensions of the NEXT built replacement part that I literally just smashed!

My wife, at her work area At the time of "WHAM" in the shop instantly jumps up and grabs the whole sleigh...... and her exact verbal saying to me "OHHHH NO YOU DON'T" and walks away with the sleigh itself at the time I slammed that damned small part, she thought for a split second that I had ruined the whole works! (THANK GOD I work in sub assemblies!) As that one glue slum issue would have literally taken me out of the contest! Would have ruined the whole model! Just to say how bad it was!

*sigh* at least the sleigh is in MINT shape, but damned crap to happen I knew it get me sooner or later....

Thought you all might get a bit of a laugh outta me and stoopid glue anyway! I'll laugh at it for now DAMN junk LOL

One of those Just walk away, and laugh.... times you know?

EVERYTHING has gone well till this! NOT a single "hitch" with anything done to it, but that one small part, Bastard!

Yet another verbal update....

That "WHAM" part, has been rebuilt, and is painted, and NOW has its freakin trim on it (what caused the "WHAM" yesterday!) But thats done. Its almost ready to be added to the model.......I'm NOT going to give this one away! It will be revealed, WHEN the final pictures are posted.....I have pictures to post, just don't have them done, they will be edited, and uploaded later today....

As for the remaining details, Body of the sleigh has been clear coated, and its setting, it has also gotten MORE details, within, as you'll see.....These will be revealed later today, I'm not going to say what any one of them are till I have the pictures to back up the update....

A LOT of detail work has been done! With most of those updates, today, you'll see them...... ONLY!!!! a FEW "last second" details WILL be added not revealed till thee end. Which is coming!

I can honestly say in 26 years, this is the first of them for me.......... it was thee last started, and thee first finished! AMAZING!

So anyway, "its later today".... and I'm trying to kill a little time this morning as on Thursday morning. I let the wife sleep in and i take the daughter to school, SO, with that said....I went and grabbed the camera card from the shop and got the pics edited for posting and uploaded to add the links for all to see! SO, with that said, here we go!

Christmas_Hemi_Sleigh_051_detail.jpg

Seen here is the fuel line going from the front mounted tank (like the inspiration picture shows....) I ran the fuel line! This was a FUN detail.....Good GAWD....As I musta wasted 3 hours digging through different wire types till I foundsomething, suitable? I guess would be the right word for this......... SO, finding that made it possible! BUT, what about a fuel filter? Yep, had to add one. just isn't right without it, so then back to digging, just didn't take nearly as long to locate a double, thats forsure! I got it somewhat painted from my parts organizers from a used part, this one was in WAY bettershape then the other one I had, and sadly the other one was also a "single" filter not a double!

Off to run the piping from the center of the filter bank to the rear of the front engines injectors. and then out the back ofthe secondfilter to the rear of the rear engine injectors.... looks pretty good!

Christmas_Hemi_Sleigh_052_detail.jpg

Showing the nicely done front mounted fuel tank.....

Then the MAJOR stuff! I went and gone crazy a bit with some interior details.....

Christmas_Hemi_Sleigh_053_detail.jpg

WELL NOW........ you see a Candy Cane gear shift, and boot, all custom made and painted by me, as well as the lower "dash" area has some "trim" on it now....

I also added a windshield, with gold trim, as well as a rear view mirror for Santa use to watch for following UFO's while the ole magic makes him fly as long as we all "BELIEVE" he'll remain flying but. if that drops, then he'll have to use the shifter and track to get him through.....:D

Christmas_Hemi_Sleigh_055_detail.jpg

Christmas_Hemi_Sleigh_056_detail.jpg

NOW I'm gonna say, this is THEE LAST "photo" update you will see of this build, the END is near!

A few surprises will come when the end is shown!

ENJOY!

This build, let me tell you............. I had to hurt myself to get it this far LOL BEEN GREAT tho, don't get me wrong! As you all know I love to take my time building, which makes me a slow builder by far..... I have been having a BLAST absolutely no-doubt about it, DOWNRIGHT fun, like you don't know! The design stages of things has to be what I LOVE the most.... its that brain food I guess......Just to see how and where I can "STUFF" of Shoe-Horn things in that would actually be needed for such a build!

Something I haven't said, and will now, this build, has been helping me, with a pretty serious issue, that I just haven't spoke of....As you all know, I lost my Dad in March of this year. With that said, he LOVED Christmas, so much that on November 1st, he'd begin decorating the house and would continue decorating the house from November 1st all the way till December 23rd, YES that many lights, statues, figures, you name it, he had it.............. He had an ENTIRE village that goes in the yard to support Disney at Christmas! One entire corner of the yard was dedicated for these, he had I dunno 20 of these "villages" that he'd set up in the yard every year....Over a million lights, and thats not all, inside the house too, was like a damned Christmas decoration shop.....Gaudy, you bet, but. he loved it, and in someways, over the years I have it too, a much "lighter" version of it, and kinda been "stomping" it out and almost blew out that little flame.....WELL Dad & I had a serious falling out over 20 years ago....NEVER spoke a word to each other in that time either until 4 years ago, after Thanksgiving, and before Christmas, my wife was filling out Christmas cards, and each year, we would add a picture of our daughter Lily in the card and mail them to specific family members to get pictures, and there that year was one left, NEVER a year before did a mis-count happen on the number of pictures AND Christmas cards! We always had the exact amount, WELL this year, (4 years ago) I told my wife I wanted that last picture, and that last card, I filled out a note on the left of the card, giving my home phone number, with the picture of my daughter My Dad;s ONLY grandchild, and mailed it off......... 3 days pass and the phone rings, and he was in tears on the other end...........Its not fair that he's gone, BUT, I'm glad I made that choice, it made him a happy man, to see his one and only grandchild, and the years from that time opened me up to a way to see, that I am a lot more like my Dad then I EVER gave credit too, this also goes for the Christmas attachment he had as well as I got, just I have a bit of a twisted sense. Those who know.......know just what I'm talking about here....

This whole build, my Dad has watched over it, its something I can't explain, but its he's there, I said to my wife the other day in the shop, I wished Dad was alive to see this, and things, just...I know a lot of you out there knows the feeling you feel when you just "know"....I just know, My Dad as a spirit is uplifting that in me and I at times am not even aware of it....BUT I do give him the credit for this build, if it wasn't for him, I don't think the Christmas Spirit would reside in me right now as it does and hasn't been in the past....With it tho, I myself can see a difference in me, with the whole "Christmas Spirit" feeling and deal. Its way more....pronounced now I suppose would be the best way to describe it. So with all that "said" I guess the best way to end/finish that paragraph is,

Dad, this ones for you!

As far as the details, just toss in a little of the ole "Christmas Spirit" and see where it takes ya.....I've been a model railroader and NORMALLY, I'd be thinking up decoration to incorporate with the trains....Snowy scenes and stuff, kinda like the movie Polar Express really, so.....but why any different approach? The only difference is in the imagination really.....Just transfer it and the scale (size) of what your doing, or planning, like this sleigh, its planned as I went, NOTHING on paper, "Instructions" are really someone elses views on how it ought to be done, ONLY in THEIR own mind!!!!!! Altho NEVER quite as intense as this is, I mean really this model has a lot in to it, design, build, materials, you name it, BUT the enthusiasm I've put forth, just a bit above and beyond what I would have been doing for say a "Christmas Display" of running trains through a village that I made "look" like winter etc, and in some cases with the trains, it would have begun being assembled months ago! So a lot of that is in fact in this build, BUT shoe-horned into a much smaller space!

Thanks tho everyone, thats what keeps it interesting, your views on what I've done or not done. One of the many reasons this forum, club is as much fun as it truly is!

Coolest build ever!! Thanks for sharing the story John, I can tell you miss him a lot and it's really nice you got to spend some time and talk before he passed. I am sure he is looking at your project and would think it kicks ***!!! I hope you have a Merry Christmas John and it's no doubt with your Christmas spirit that your dad is with you and proud of you :glasses7:

BTW, where are the big header pipes?!? :burnout:

Dude! That is awesome!!! Love the thought put into it and all the detail!! Not to mention its a great tribute to your dad! Keep up the good work!

Thanks Keith, Yeah, the whole Christmas "thing"..... It was something I got from Dad, sadly, its gonna be a ***** this year (Thanksgiving & Christmas) is the first of both holidays without him....And sadly thats partly also to blame WHY I'm doing this contest....Kinda of a healing thing, you know?

Difficult to explain, or for that matter talk about too.....

As far as the "big header pipes". you can see them in the background in some of the pictures, they aren't done yet, as this contest isn't due for the judging that I entered into with this model till December 1st....SO, I've got a bit of time to play and all as I'm trying different ideas for different things....

So with that said, I got a few things yet to add, and I'm working on a few more "interior" decorations so.....:D

They'll be posted as they happen!

Thanks tho Keith, even with Dad being gone he's partly to blame that I'm back building models again.....Which really, isn't a bad thing!

wow ....and you say I come up with "crazy *** ideas" ......this thread tops the cake for that :D

you are obviously a very talented person please keep on doing what you do. :)

Yeah, this one is awesome in so many ways. Can't wait to see the finished product!

Dude! That is awesome!!! Love the thought put into it and all the detail!! Not to mention its a great tribute to your dad! Keep up the good work!

Thanks man! This whole little object is right at 8 inches long. (Don't ask, wasn't planned) and WILL fit within a standard model car display case. Again, don't ask, I have no idea how any of it is even possible, but it all does with no issues!

I merely sat down in the shop and hand drawn the sides shape of the sleigh body, and then got it till I was "happy" with it, AND that a '41 Plymouth seat would fit inside without issue (Thats the seat you see) And off to the races I went once the shape was work-able!

This whole model is out-of-my-head....I took what I fore seen in my own mind, put it on plastic and ran with it, the ONLY part to meet ANYTHING "paper" was the sheet of cardboard I used to draw out the sleigh sides....Everything else was drawn onto the plastic and cut.....The sleigh sides were a template I made, as you seen in the beginning....

Both the traits are credited to my Dad, the design and the Christmas Spirit to bring them forth....

So yeah thats a Dedicated thing, and this one, I know he'd be proud of.....Knowing him, I would say he'd come up with a way to put it on top of the Tree when the time is right, BUT I'm afraid of it hitting the floor, SO, its going to be within one of the decorations in the living room, Just not sure, where..............

wow ....and you say I come up with "crazy *** ideas" ......this thread tops the cake for that :D

you are obviously a very talented person please keep on doing what you do. :)

Rani,
Yes you have a point, I been doing wild crazy **** like this my whole life. I've been basically a "tool" designer" for the past 20 years as well as a Building tradesmen.....Been a "model builder" of some sort my entire life.... SO, with that comes a lot of things that if I have the materials, well......You see what happens! LOL

Yeah, this one is awesome in so many ways. Can't wait to see the finished product!

Thanks! I appreciate the compliment, it is an awesome build! There are times EVEN I (the designer and builder) is surprised at what comes from my head into items like this.....And then posting things within a forum of any sort model car, or real car, the "feedback" is what powers me to continue......

I must have 10 to 15 models in the process of being built RIGHT NOW, and all are on "hold" till this one is done! I have to have it done by Dec. 1st so.....And its real close to completed as seen in the last pics so....I still have a bit of time on it to change things if I want too.....BUT, you can see, where its headed for the most part with the pics I've posted!

Thanks for the compliments, (YES you too Rani) crazy ideas, if you only knew! LOL

Well where ever you display, your dad will be smiling and proud! As should you be! It truly is a work of art!

Thanks man! It is a work of art, A LOT of work I can tell ya, nothing besides the seat and the actual "blowers" and the blower "belts" are factory parts, I literally made everything else, include all that "lattice framework"!!!!!!! The few "factory" parts, where used and everything "fitted" around them!

The blower "hats"???? Those were a pair of ear rings I found that they were on sale last year after Christmas, and I took the whole rack at 90% off......... like cents on the dollar for EVERYTHING.. 15 or so pairs of ear rings to use as "decorations? Yep......crazy stuff like that!

Seen this and thought of you :glasses7:
