In 1968,

The NHRA Stock Class started at
A/Stock ....... 8.00 to 8.49 Wt/HP

The weight breaks were at every .50 Wt/HP up to J/Stock.

Starting at K/Stock {13.00 to 13.99 Wt/HP}, the classes
then went to a 1.00 Wt/HP difference.

How did they get 275 Hp car to run 12s??? Did they strip the car down to 2100 lbs??

E/SA .... 12.79 ....... 1968 Plymouth Barracuda - 340/275 HP

Those were the factory horsepower ratings. The stock 340 was factory-rated at 275, but in fact put out more. And then the stock-class racers started reworking them with their magic so they were putting out much more than the factory rating.
And back then there was a lot of "creativity" - cheating, only if you got caught - going on with the entire car, not just the engines.

E/SA .... 12.79 ....... 1968 Plymouth Barracuda - 340/275 HP

Same car at about the same shipping weight will go mid-high 10's today under NHRA/IHRA rules. But the rules today have allowed a LOT more stuff than in 68. Under the 1968 rules, it could be considered "Pure Stock" these days. The 340 was under-rated anyway.

That 109mph would be closer to low 12's if the car hooked well and had a better converter. MPH is a more accurate indication of horsepower.

1968 Plymouth Barracuda '340-S' Fastback

* Shipping Weight ..... #3162 lbs.

The NHRA re-factored the 340/275 HP to {310 HP} Horsepower in December 1967, 1-Month before the 1968 NHRA Winternationals.

'Coletti Chrysler-Plymouth' out of Hillsboro, Oregon set the NHRA National Record.

While Joe {Father} prepped the Barracuda, Mark {17 year-old son} drove the E/SA Barracuda.

A person who does not get the credit for making their '1st' 340 run, was Factory Race-Engine Builder and Drag Racer ~ John Hagen.

You can sure see patterns of what were the hot combos. It looks like most '57 Chevies were OK, and the supercharged 312 '57 Ford looked pretty successful. Who knew about the '68 442? Wasn't that the first year for the long-stroke 400? It must have been in just the right category.

Neighbors 68 FB 340 F/SA has gone 10.79 at Pomona....275 HP.....this one has made 470 hp on dyno...

Correct,

1st-year for the Oldsmobile 'long stroke' 400.
* {Bore 3.87" x 4.25" Stroke}

The 1968 '4-4-2' 400/360 HP {W-30} was built
'specifically' for D/Stock {9.50 to 9.99 Wt/Hp}

Shipping Weight ............ #3510 lbs.
Weight-to-Horsepower ..... 9.75

Famous for the O.A.I. {Outside Air Induction}
under bumper scoops.

So, are you say that my '69 FB Barracuda could easily run 12s with 310 HP?? It currently has a 318 but I have already installed a Heavy Duty 2004R (1800 stall) and 3:73 gears. I have most of the parts for the 390 stroker that I will build and install into the Barracuda. I was shooting for 350-375 HP. I'm not building a drag car, just a powerful torque monster for the street. If it only takes 310 HP in a Barracuda to hit the 12s then I should be able to do the same with my 390 stroker correct?? I'm asking because I didn't think that 12s would be achievable at all with the 390 motor (built mildly). Of course my car has factory air, P/S, P/B and still has an all steel body plus big 10 inch speakers and amps so I imagine that it weighs a little more than stock (3162 lbs). Again, I have no plans to take my car to the track, just want to build something for the street that would put some fear in the Camaros, Firebirds, Mustangs.

Are you comparing 1968 performance output and results.

Back in 1968, in Stock Class you could;
* Balance the engine internals
* Forged-True Pistons
* Dykes-type Oil Rings
* Blueprint to specifications
* 3/Angle Valve Job
* CC the Cylinder Head combustion chambers to minimum specifications
* Blueprinted Camshaft
* Stock load-rate Valve Springs
* Stock Intake Manifold
* Stock Carburetor
* Headers
* Any Rear-End Gear combination {Typically 4.89 Gears with the 340}
* 7" Wide Slicks

A 'professionally' decently built 340 in 1968 Stock Class {E/S or E/SA} were running 13.10's @ 107 MPH.

I would be totally happy with low 13s!!!. The 390 will be balanced, 9.2:1 CR, airgap intake, 750 Holley, 340/360 exhaust manifolds, 2 1/2" dual pipes, mildly ported 596 heads, custom cam with 2.02/1.6 valves, 3 angle valve job, gasket matched. The 2004R should give me a really good bottom end (probably 4:10/4:55 first gear ratio) with the lower 2004R first gear and the overdrive will keep the motor from having to go to any high RPMs. I already have 12 1/2 inch tires in the rear, 5800 RPM maximum!!

The 1957 Ford's with the 312/300 HP 'Thunderbird' Spercharger were
formidable cars.

They were not to taken lightly, especially the Automatics.

Looks like the D/Dart program was 2 years too soon. Having run a best of 12.95 @ 105 back in 1966, it would have been a more competative in 1968 running in F/S.

Alan,

By June 1968,

The 1966 Dodge D/Dart was more a 'myth', as there were very
few of these cars competing in F/Stock.

Geoff

Most of the the Mopar 426 Street Hemi cars were shut out of the
NHRA Stock Class in 1968.

Since the NHRA re-factored them from 425 HP to 465 HP in
Stock Class.

Only the heavy-beast Mopars like the Dodge Chargers
had enough bulk to fit into the A/Stock {8.00 to 8.49 Wt/HP} Class.

* 1966 Dodge Charger '426 Street Hemi'
* #3895 lbs. ~ 465 HP = 8.37 Wt/HP
* Production Numbers ..... {468}

* 1967 Dodge Charger R/T '426 Street Hemi'
* #3870 lbs. ~ 465 HP = 8.32 Wt/HP
* Production Numbers ..... {118}

* 1968 Dodge Charger R/T '426 Street Hemi'
* #3754 lbs ~ 465 HP = 8.07 Wt/HP
* Production Numbers ..... {475}

Kick

How about that 1954 Buick Century blasting a
15.24 in P/Stock {19.00 to 20.99 Wt/HP} in 1968.

Who would ever think a National Record Holder.

Shipping Weight #3795 lbs. ~ 195 HP = 19.46 Wt/HP

322/195 HP 'Nailhead'

Put out 195 HP @ 4100 RPM's.
