I am looking for a source of the mopar distributor nylon shaft collars for the V8s. These used to come as a service part with a thrust washer, and a roll pin. My dealer says i can now only buy this as part of a new distributor. Well no thank you. Somebody has to make this part.

Anybody know a source for these new ?

Thanks
Matt

Matt do you think a metal bushing would work for you? I have a big tote full of old distributors your welcome to rob a part off of. Mostly Mallory and accel and some OEM stuff. I think most of them have a metal part rather than the nylon though. If I have something you think you can use your welcome to it.

Hi SSBA,

I appreciate the offers on a metal collar. Thank you. I wanted to also start this thread because i am sure theres other folks who have or are dealing with this.

My other options besides taking a replacement slant six nylon one from the "help" section and cutting the gear off, which i have actually done in a pinch years ago, is i super glued my broken one back together and gave it to my machinest friend at work to copy out of aluminum. I will take a caliper to the dizzy shaft tomorrow to get a shaft diameter, mebbe we can start from that point

Why am i not surprised mopar doesnt sell a replacement for these anymore. They really could care less about our old stuff, rather sell us a fugly 4 door dodge charger , with tacked on **** harkening back to the good ole days, that their MoPar division would rather forget. I could not even buy distributer recurve springs from mopar performance?!? Discontinued. WTF!!! I had to buy mr gasket ones, but still, come on !!

Is there somebody out there that makes a ready made aluminum replacement with a roll pin , and not a set screw that can come loose. I see these metal ones on aftermarket distributors all over evilbay.

Matt

Rick Ehrenberg has NOS ones in his ebay store, I've bought a few from him. Here's the link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/321634327022?_trksid=p2060778.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT

Mr Demon 408,

I have ricks auction for one of these book marked, and i realise that you gotta pay the person who has what you need, but come on, really ?? $24 plus i think $3 shipping for a piece of nylon with a roll pin and a washer.

I'd expect that from an aluminum one, and gladly pay that amount for a brand new aluminum one, but not plastic.

The distributor shaft is roughly .50" diameter or 1/2" for you fractional guys. I am looking in the grainger catalog. I am sure i can find something with a set screw since this isnt an oddball size. Not a roll pin, but its better than plastic. I may be able to score one from my local grainger for a few $$s

I was able to find a supply of steel collars with a set screw to replace the stock nylon piece. I bought 2 for my distributor. You can use one at the bottom of the distributor shaft against the drive gear to prevent erratic timing signal from the drive gear wanting to push up the distributor shaft. I will be filing a flat in my dist shaft for the set screws.

Anybody interested in a set of these PM me.

$5.00 each collar plus USPS shipping. i will combine shipping no prob.

Thanks
Matt

doing a full restoration on a 75 dart swinger 225 slant 6 with the two barrel set up - its a driver - just getting me things together to attain knowledge of this project - this plastic soft nylon mesh gear - i am not sold on this - you say you have metal gear for the distributor - i be interested - thanks -

Slantys have a tendency to have oil coke up on dist shaft and lock it up breaking the gear. Nylon gear prevents it eating the camshaft gear when shaft binds up. Plenty of slantys running around with pieces of nylon teeth in the oil pan. Ever change a slanty cam w engine in the car? It involves removing radiator and grille to get it out. Its a long sucker.

Good luck the nos are as brittle and break also. DO NOT USE the set screw ones at the hardware store or online, they limit/restrict the oil up to the shaft bushings and cause failures. That is why most of the distribs bottom housing are fluted. I use Metal ones I had made up and attach with a roll pin. The slant idea is ok but...…..why? When I rebuild them I just chuck the old ones usually have a crack. If you buy a nos bushing set they come with them, but again 50+ year old nylon. If you want a metal one pm me I sell them as a kit, bushing, shim and roll pin. 15 lower 48

Anything but the nylon is a improvement. You have no idea how many cores I have with them missing or broken in half.

I was able to snake it through the valence on a 65, but I agree, it is a long sucker. Nylons on Ebay are like $7 but you have to drill the hole. Tip: use a soldering iron to make a pilot hole, that nylon is slippery.

All of them need at least one side drilled 1/8". The reason Ma Mopar never had a great quality control on them and each one is not centered through the shaft. Just FYI

Yep, thats what i used. Screw that nylon collar. Was a bean counters dream. Prob cost chrysler $5 for a couple thousand of those back in the day. File a flat spot on the distributor shaft for the set screw, and dont forget to loctite the set screw on installation with red loctite. I also made a gapping shim out of .010" stainless steel shim stock with a U shaped slot in it to slide between the thrust washer and collar when tightening to keep the collar square and prevent it from cocking off to the side when tightened. When done, remove the gapping shim. I think i payed .75 cents each for the metal collars w set screws.
