things were going so well on the dyno when the water meth decided to fault. we were about to do a graphed pull when this happened. shut here down right away and thought things were all good. on restart smoke started spewing from the breathers and, well the rest is history. we were at 643 hp at the wheels 17 psi boost.
stripped down motor yesterday. #8 piston f#@ked, head gasket exploded into valley. detonation the cause. **** happens ah.
pistons are forged Mahle.

have no idea why the water meth faulted. have tested it several times this morning with air reg and it would not fault. it's a AEM 30-3000 kit and is new out of the box. ran 50/50 mix. should have shelled out the extra and got the fail safe option with the kit.

US meth users end up being burnt worse than that, sorry about the motor

over it now....gotta think about rebuild.
last time round I was misinformed about block fill and machining was already done.
360 blocks thin on the ground round here.

would it be practical to do a half block fill with my existing block and bore to .060". already .040". it's a 77 casting. performer rpm heads this time round. existing heads are ported smoggers.

the rod bearings showed signs of det on a few rods.

Kiwi's on Meth?? Now there's trouble.. You need to buy some good meth from downunder bro...

Where in nz are yah ?
No promises but will be heading home in 3 / 4 months might be able to chuck a block in the container if you wanted and can locate one round Connecticut area would just depend on what room is left shoukd know in next couple a months if your interested.

Sorry to see this.
Are those pistons the 2618 alloy for boosted applications?
Or are they the 4032 alloy for NA.
Looking at the pics, it doesn't seem like much surface area retains the piston crown (the part that broke off) due to a combination of the dish, valve relief and ring land. Also looks like sharp edges on the transitions to the dish and valve reliefs might have made a hot spot that promotes detonation.
While the lack of meth induced this, whats everyones opinions on deburring the sharp edges and coating the piston tops? Do you think the piston would have survived as the weakest link should be the head gasket.
Best of luck to 70wayfarer for a speedy recovery.

I feel for you, same thing happened to me on my neon srt4 with a 60 trim turbo, tuned it to the meth but if things go wrong (or you forget to check the fluid level of the meth I did this) motor goes to lean and boom. Are you tuning it to run with the meth on at a certain boost level or on a micro switch, my next two car will be slightly tuned to meth injection but should anything happen should be okay if something goes wrong with the injection. Nice numbers, hope you get it all fixed and see what that motor really can do.

I used what came with the stroker kit. all the builds I looked at here to get ideas, nothing was said about using a blower piston.
I think the piston would have survived if the meth worked as it should have.

Nice numbers, and ouch! Best of luck, it sucks in the pocketbook at times.

What is the entire setup you are running?

i'm running a MSD6530 so was thinking of losing the water/meth and setting up a tune for say 6psi for the street on 95-98 pump gas and a second tune for the strip and run C16 race gas.
talking to my engine guy today and will look into a custom blower style piston. suggestions on a good piston manufacturer for these are welcome.

CP Pistons, And Ross look good to my engine guy.

if I go with a custom piston this time round it can have an extra couple of thou added. this means I can block fill the block now and still be .040" ish oversize. better than .060" that I had considered. will look at JE, CP, Ross inverted dome.

thought bout bolting my old cast crank in when I fill the block and torque it down along with the old iron heads.
