I was meaning to do this for a while and stumbled across the pics on the puter. The pics are of my 69 cuda factory 4spd console. Some have converted their auto console to 4spd's, well here are pics with measurements. You can see in one of the pics the rounded/curved "paper" piece that mounts to the double hump in the console. Hope this helps someone, maybe make it a sticky. If you need other dimensions/pics, lemme know.

Thanks

Those are good for the top plate. I have a correct NOS top plate to use but would like measurements on where to cut the console itself. Thanks for all of your help.

NOS for 69?? Me wants it!! Mine has a tiny hole where the prev owner attached a tach...LOL Lemme know if I can help

If I was not going to use it I would sell it to you. I bought it a few years ago and paid just over 300 for it shipped at that time. In todays prices a front top plate is not worth that much now.

Yours is an auto or 4spd?? Once I get my 4spd plate rechromed and decaled you wont notice the tiny hole. Not too often you see an NOS top plate, auto or 4spd

Cool thread!!

I have a 4speed and auto consoles for ebodies.
I might be able to get pics if someone had a need

Post them if you can. I know there were a few members that were looking for dimensions for the abody conversion. I was hoping it would help. I know a member on here 340plot did a conversion and it turned out pretty nice. I know that on the bottom side of the 4spd console, there is some areas that are thicker than the auto ones....cant remember where....post yer pics up!

The thicker area on the 4spd consoles is where that screw is to attach the side hump in your pic of the underside. Auto consoles don't have that hole.

Maybe if you get a chance, take some pics of the base opening hole for the 4spd.

Good morning C! Pics of where the shifter boot attaches??

Here is the auto one that I converter to 4 speed. If using a hurst shifter there is no need to cut the side of the console, I left my auto base untouched. I believe that hump on the side is a holdover from the early A's, or from the inland shifter days..... The hurst shifter clears with no issues. As for the top plate I cut it to the factory location, ensuring that it encompassed the auto holes, and fit the shifter boot, then I trimmed the opening with some aluminum extrusion from the hardware store designed for edging around floor ceramic tiles, it worked and looks great.

As a side note - over the last ten years or so I have come across 4 or 5 four speed console bases installed from the factory in 75 and 76 auto cars with auto top plates. They had flat cardboard covering the side cut out, with carpet glued onto it. I kind of suspect the factory had a lot of extra 4 speed console bases and used them up in auto cars. Watch for them, they show up sometimes on ebay and craigslist etc and the sellers don't even know the console is a four speed base.

Here's a couple pics I took today of the 4spd console base. Let me know if more are needed....

i think someone should sticky this. this is something I want to do someday if I ever find a console.
thanks for sharing!

just a question, this automatic console fits for any 4 speed car? how does it line up ? I always thought that the shifter for the autos and the manual were in different spots? coz the manuals have the side trans hump. just a bit confused :S

or do you need a special shifter to go with the console?

The shifter is different depending on the year of the car, as well as bench or buckets. I didnt measure my 4spd console before removing it, so I dont have any measurements to relate to an auto vs 4spd

I assume you need a shifter like the 1 in this topic
doesn't look very sturdy to me..

That shifter looks correct, for 67 and up, but here is the link to brewers website

The shifters are different for non console and console cars. With a console the shifter comes up through the console in a location more to the right, then bends towards the driver. The console bases are different auto to 4 speed, but only in that the 4 speed consoles have a large cut out on the driver side of the console base presumably to clear the shifter. The console top plates are obviously different auto to 4 speed, but as in my post above an auto top plate can be modified to work with a 4 speed. The shifters used up to mid 68 were made by the Inland tool company, and honestly are crappy and very sloppy. Mid 68 up to sometime in the early to mid 70's the shifters were made by Hurst. This is true for both console and non console cars (both inland and hurst made a console and a non console shifter). I believe the cut out on the side of the base is a leftover from the inland shifter, as I personally have used an un-modified auto console base with a hurst console shifter. Despite its looks the hurst console shifter works, and if everything else is in good shape can work very well. Hurst used to say "shift as hard as you want, just dont break your arm".
Here is a link showing a reproduction shifter handle for a console, if you look around brewers site you will see other shifter handles as well. The old inand shifter can be identified by a "T" reverse lockout below the shift ball which must be lifted to engage reverse. http://slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=38329

Just an FYI, you don't need to cut the side of the console if you don't have a "4-Speed Hump" in your car..

I cut an Auto Top Plate from a '67 Console (and picked up an NOS Auto Top Plate prior to that) for my '74 Duster that I was converting to 4-Speed.

My car doesn't have a 4-Speed Hump, I cut just enough of the floor to clear the linkage & shifter, and then made new tunnel/floor sections to box/cover it as close/low profile as possible. The '67 auto console fits perfectly over it, and I don't have the 4-Speed Hump sticking into the side of my leg either :D

I have a question that I have not found an on here. My question is in converting an auto console base to a 4spd base what is the measurement from the very front edge of the console to the front of the cut out for the shifter hump or bump ? I included a picture!
