Wanted to have a poll about PayPal. I love using PayPal for buying and selling parts online. But it seems like if I'm buying or selling I'm the one paying the fee. I lost a sale once because someone didn't want to pay the $3 fee for a part. I don't mind the fee but was wondering what people think.

Do you think the seller or the buyer should pay the fee?

Buyer because you are selling the part for a certain amount of money for a reason and after that fee you are not... But it's really not a big deal to me as it's only 3%

I'm assuming you are talking about using paypal here on FABO? Just add a few $ to the overall price....or state in your add that the fees are extra... Never been a problem for me I guess.

I have purchased several parts where the seller asks that i pay via friends and family to avoid the 3%. I think in doing that, you lose any Paypal protection if things go bad. Ive recently decided to request and pay the 3% if the seller brings that up.

I usually do the family deal, IF I know the person on here I'm buying from. If not, I'll pay the extra.

I have sold a couple things and I clearly stated in the ad that they cover the fee, and of course they didn't. So I lost a couple of bucks, no big deal I guess.

Just tack the 3% on, like a tax. It's the price of doing business with some security. Isn't it worth it? I mean, there have been ads for parts about people being taken advantage of, at least with PayPal you will have a means of getting money back if the deal goes real far south. It's a new day and age, buying online isn't like going to the swap meet or want ads in newspapers, or word of mouth. It's an electronic age, sometimes it sucks, sometimes it don't.

Unless noted its the seller. With that said I'll use the PP fee as part of negotiation of price.

I usually pick up the fee as the seller... Just pad it into the price. When you quote a price let the buyer know it's included. No haggles. No surprises.

Yes. That should be figured in the asking price. If you use PayPal to sell stuff then you pay the fee. The $ goes in your account and they handle it that is the reason for the charge.

What if the seller prefers money order and you request Paypal? Would you then pay the xtra if he takes your Paypal or just figure screw him?

Yes if you have your price set for PayPal and the buyer doesn't pay with PayPal, do you take money off? Like Issaid the 3% doesn't bother me but some people it does.

I tell buyers I want $X in my account after ALL fees. IMO, if a buyer wants the "protection/insurance" that paypal affords, then buyer gets to pay it.

When I pay using paypal, I almost always add the 3% on to the total.

3% on $10 is not a big deal. Do 3% on $1000 multiple times and it's a little different.

I like buying with Pay Pal. It really irritates me when people ask me to pay using the non 3% method though. I think it is cheating and I don't mind adding the 3% plus a little for the convenience. When I am selling I will only accept a US postal money order though, no pay pal!
JMHO-Rat:burnout:

Very good point. I used to do the pay as a personal payment but now I only do it for goods. So I can have the protection.

When a merchant accepts a credit card for a purchase, they pay a fee to the credit card company. Therefore, they price their goods to reflect that fee, and pass it on to the customer. It's considered the cost of doing business. Common practice when conducting business, the customer always pays the fee.

Seller. He's the one getting the cash. If he's concerned about the fee, just build it into the asking price, IMHO.

i say buyer.. i always give the buyer the option to pay as friends/family, i also state "or add 3% for paypal fees" and i even say, if you want to do neither, then send a US Postal money order..i like to give the buyer options.. but im sure as hell aint paying paypal.

The buyer pays the fees either way because that's where the money comes from, duh.

That said, if you don't want to use Paypal because you're too flippin cheap to give up 3%, then maybe you need to get screwed.

If the seller insists on using Paypal, then he should cover the fees... :evil3:

If he doesn't, then I will anyway so I get the protection and hopefully don't have to start a "bad guy" thread....

Sometimes there may be alterior motives if the seller tries to recommend "send as a gift"...

The buyer should not have to pay for the protection of getting what they paid for. Personally I'm not buying anything used / person to person over the internet without PayPal. I want to believe in honest people but that way of thinking has got me screwed so many times. $3 out of $100 WTH. It's worth it to me either way, buyer or seller. Plus, if I'm selling, I have spending money the wifey can't see.

I just sold an item using paypal, (have already spent the $) they stuck me w/ the fee. I wasn`t expecting it , but wasn`t much. guess the seller pays it all time , huh? no problem, will adjust a little next time where the buyer will pay half, seems fair to both parties .:coffee2:

There's some truth to that. When I buy out of my PP account (as Friends&Family), there aren't any fees to either party.

It is 100% true, but some of these guys are too thick to see it. If the seller elects to "come off" his price for the Paypal fees, that's his choice. The Paypal fees are still paid. By the buyer. If the seller "pads" his price to make up for the fee, the buyer pays the fee. The only way either party would "not pay" the fee is if Paypal did not get paid. Since 100% of the money in the transaction comes from the buyer, the buyer always pays the fees. Every. Single. Time.

The only other exception is when someone chooses to pay as a friend or family. Then no protection is granted.

Saying it any other way is simply W R O N G.

Here endeth the lesson.

for me its simple. the buyer pays it or doesn't get the part. most likely i'm already losing money on the part so i'm not losing another 3%

So a guy that wants to pay cash has to eat an inflated price because someone else wants to use paypal.

Remember the cash/credit prices at gas stations?

Next time I buy something I'll tell the seller my bank has a 50% service fee on any transaction and I'll send what's left. Any of the people saying the buyer should eat it step up on this deal, it's no different. It's not the sellers job or responsibility to get the $ they want in there pocket for the buyers convenience of using paypal.
