Here is our latest 440 build. Pretty mild, small HR cam, MP 452 straight plug heads w/mild port work(stage 1), Pump gas 9.75 to 1 compression. Nothing to serious just a well built well engineered 440. Here is the run down

440 prepped and blueprinted
440 cast crank 10/10 and balanced
Speed pro flat top pistons
MP aluminum 452 heads
MP dual plane intake(RPM)
MRL HR cm setup 220/228 110 LSA .550/.560 lift
Proform 750 carb
Aluminum roller rockers


It ran good with the FBO ignition, had 15in vacuum at 900 idle without the vacuum advance hooked up. With the vacuum advance hooked up, it pulled 19in vacuum at idle. Ran smooth and layed the torque down.

Peak torque was 568tq at 3450. The dyno pull was started at 2800rpm and it was already making 534tq and held 500+ all the way to peak power of 519HP at 5400rpm.

So for a MILD 440, that's a good day 519HP and 568TQ all in by 5400rpm. It was still making 500+HP at 5800rpm, but no need to run it that high for a street machine. This engine will have a LONG Happy life in the 1968 Satellite.

great build yes... but use iron heads and numbers go down... the advent of nice aluminum heads do wonders for these engines. i would LOVE to have a monster like that... when this ole 400 wears out i will have to keep MRL phone # handy.
 
What do you base that on?

is anyone actually going to say that aluminum heads dont flow better than iron? Is this not why we have buy and use aluminum heads... better performance....? If they didnt we'd wouldnt be using the aluminum for better perfomance gains.

I think you need to read the site more.
 
Cylinder heads are a major component in building horsepower because fuel, air, and exhaust flow through them. The size and shape of a cylinder head port affects compression & flow of gases through the engine.
 
Aluminum heads will not automatically create more power than iron heads unless they flow more air and are installed on a higher compression ratio engine. In cases where you have a decent port job on a set of iron heads it is possible to bolt on a set of out-of-the box aluminum heads and lose power. Aluminum is automatically lighter but not faster.

I STAND CORRECTED..... i will stick with iron heads.
 
I like aluminum heads because, porting being identical, you can run a higher static compression ratio with aluminum which equals more power without detonation.

Here are the dyno sheets. I love the torque, damn close to 600TQ and no stroker??? That's a Very good day!

Ok,, now you done it.The cast crank 440 that has been sitting in the corner for years may just have to come out and play.............

I agree. That and the weight savings is nice. Obviously someone who knows what they are doing can get a cast iron cylinder head to flow well. And unless you're doing it yourself, you're going to have a ton of money into them. You're going to have a good amount into any cylinder head done right, imo. Which is why I'd rather start out with aluminum, to have those benefits from the get go. But, to each their own.

Nice little build. Shows how much thinking a little, seems to always work better than slapping the biggest baddest parts together does.
 
The hyd roller and the heads are where the power is.As well as a WELL MATCHED combination working together.Everything I see is complimenting each other.That would be a BEAST in an A body.

how much is the weight savings using aluminum? 75 lbs or so? build... the good builder like MRL know where the hidden ponies are....
 
Just looked at the dyno sheets. 500+ tq 2800-5500 rpm. That's dam impressive.
