0n the awesome 66 dart leaning tower with the famous A904. Shifter on column has too much play, and too loose. Almost 1/2in in each direction when in gear. There must be some way to tighten this up. transmission is good, so I think it is something in the linkage in the column or ?

How do i shore this up?

Have somebody sit in the seat, while you look at the linkage, most likely the bushings where the rods hook to the trans or column linkage is wore out.
Take it apart and have custom brass bushings turned down.
I had to drill the attachment points for the rods to a larger size, and weld the rods in a couple of places to fix the wear in them.
Cost me about $20 to fix it.
Shifted really nice afterwards.

Good advice.
I have used nylon tubes from the hardware drawers of Ace Hardware to make bushings also and that works well.

You can also use spring washers under places that have cotter pins to tighten up slop in things.

Sounds like good advice. So you guys are saying that the slop is fixed from the engine compartment side, and that nothing inside the column needs adjusting.

I have this problem that I posted about ... except besides being loose, it gets stuck. But we have some good advice here.

By the way the 3 on the tree transmission is an A903. There are rubber bushings on the shifter arms on the left side of the transmission P/N 1941699 and they are available from http://www.dpmotorparts.com/index.cfm for $4.00 each. There is also an adjustment that can be made to compensate for wear in the column and the 2 shifter rods are also adjustable. A little lengthy to explain here I highly recommend you purchase a service manual either in paper form or CD rom.

Usually it's all from the linkage parts and not the column at all, but it wouldn't hurt to have that helper move the lever up and down a little and see just to make sure.

Not a lot of detail to go on there, so it could be anything from a lube problem in the column to a worn synchronizer hubs inside the trans or any combination of the above.
