It would also be super easy to thread the carburetor body and thread the tube insert for a more durable connection. At least, that's how I would do it.

BE ADVISED: This article staates that the nodification to boost-reference the power valve is written for draw-through applications ONLY and is not intended to work on BLOW-THROUGH systems.

That takes it out of the area of pertinence for MOST forced induction applications, nowdays, I think.

You would think that HOT ROD would be a little more in tune with whaat's going on than that...:eek:ops:
 
The artical is about a roots style supercharger. They are drawthru. So the modification is relevent. This modification can also be used with a drawthru turbo setup. So it is also relevant for them. By far the best written, that I have seen, on how to do this modification.

I said, relative to it not being about modifying a carb for blow-thru-type power valves in my earlier post: "That takes it out of the area of pertinence for MOST forced induction applications, nowdays, I think."

I didn't say it wasn't pertinent. Just not pertinent to blow-thru systems.

My point was, the number of draw-thru systems being built is, I think, small, compared with the number of blow-trhru projects out there. I don't remember seeing or hearing about many draw-thru systems lately, although they seem to work equally-well as the blow-thru's insofar as power-production is concerned.. Their main drawback is, nobody seems to want to run an intercooler with them because it becomes, basically,a bomb when full of pressurized air and fuel. KA-BOOM!!!!

So, where was the Hot Rod article on modifying carbs for boost-referenced power valves for blow-thru's?
 
No matter how the easy and simple a mod you find that actually WORKS, people are gonna come out and bash it.

You need to get out more and visit the VW bug forums. The drawthru setup is quite popular over there. You really don't need an intercooler with drawthru. The very act of mixing the fuel and air in the carb and running it thru the turbo produces a "liquid intercooler" which is just effective as an external intercooler. This is explained in MacInnes book.

Who bashed it? I didn't; I just said I thought that it seemed to me that the bulk of the systems in place and being built were blow-thru, so it's value was questionable, compared to the same-style article about mods to a blow-thru carb..

How many of those VW devotees bother to read the "For A Bodies Only" slant six forum?

Not many, I'd bet, so the advice about modifying a Holley carb to work well with a draw-thru system isn't going to be seen by many 4-cylinder, air-cooled racers I'd bet.

The '65 Barracuda, 170-powered slant six Bonneville racer has a draw-thru system, but that is the only draw-thru setup I have heard about, lately.

Back a few years ago, NHRA featured a class for modified cars, called "Modified Compact." There were at least three 2000-cc Ford Pintos built for that class, by the likes of "Ohio" George Montgomery (yeah, that one,) a team of Ford engineers, (the car ended up belonging to Buddy Ingersoll,) and Butch Ball, of Washington state. They all were draw-thru and all were blindingly fast (9.60s...) but expensive to race, so the class never "took off" and was dropped by NHRA ten or so, years ago. Too bad; they were fun to watch, with their (manual) 5-speed, wheelstands in every gear, 135mph runs...

They were all "draw-thru" turbos... 2,350 pounds, ready-to-race, with driver...

I think using Radiator/ Gas tank repair putty puts it into the "hack job" arena..Using grub screws and threaded fitting would be more of a "professional job".

It's good enough for draw through systems, yes, but how many slant six draw-thru systems have you seen being put together, lately? Or draw-thru V8 systems, for that matter, which was my point. They are just not very popular, though they don't seem to be down on power, when compared with blow-thru projects. I think it's the intercooler problem that keeps them out of the mainstream... could be wrong.

And, don't worry; if the alternative to the original creates problems, the users will find out about it soon enough... :banghead:
