Some I see have an "open" face grill and some have a "split" in the center...which is for which year?

The 1971 grille for the Demon also is painted flat black, instead of argent.
Don't know if this only applied to the 340 Demon or not.

71 has the split grill, the Demon fender emblems were all stickers and they had a rally dash like the 70 Dart Swinger.

72 has the one piece grill, the Demon fender emblems were chrome with yellow and red paint. The rally gauges were gone leaving a rectangle shaped speedometer surrounded with small gauges for oil, temp etc...

I dont recall seeing the double scoops on any 72, only the snorkel style.

71 has the more desirable horse power and forged crank as well.

The '71 "split" grill is one piece. They only appear different visually, the '71 grill has vertical fins, the '72 grills have horizontal fins.

Also, on the emblems- the '71 stickers include the cartoon devil holding the pitchfork. The '72's got metal emblems, but the cartoon devil was gone and the top of the pitchfork was shortened so it just looks like an "M".

As far as the flat black vs. argent, that was true of the '71 vs. the '70, but it was just the vertical fins that were black. Also, they weren't painted black, the grill is molded in black plastic, and they were just left plain. The argent is painted.

'70
(vertical fins are argent like the surround)

And to really confuse things, the Demon Sizzler package got a color coded grill...

71 and 72 grilles are different enough that they require different front fender extensions. The difference is in the lip inside that carries the chrome metal trim (that trim is different too). The 72 is more shallow than the 71.

They have fender different extensions, but they don't require them. The headlight bezels/grill surrounds don't mount to the fender extensions, and for both years the headlight bezel/grill is out in front of the trim on the fender extensions. The lip on the fender extension is more shallow on the '72's, as is the metal trim piece, but it doesn't effect the grill in either case. There are plenty of folks running '71 grill's on their 72's, it's a bolt in swap.

Quite interessting, because everybody can identify the 72 model easily with the side markers.

For me I like the 72 grille better, because it makes the car 'wider' and more aggressive looking - from a visual point.
Nevertheless the 71s are the real deal as whole package - performancewise.

Some people just like the '71 grille better (myself included), I don't think it's about trying to fool people into thinking that it isn't a '72. There are at least a couple members here with the '71 grille in a '72.

'72 was a one year only grille too. According to the production numbers, there would be about an extra 19,654 grilles out there for the '70/71 style.

My 72 has a 71 grill in it. I prefer the look of it.

Some great information that I did not know about Demons in this thread.

my 71 demon has a 72 grille that I put there ...the 72 grille is so tough looking and one year only and it bolted right into place.

difference between 70 and 71 grill. i prefer both over the 72 style.

Preaching to the choir Joe. I like the '71 front end so much I turned my '74 Duster into a '71 Demon tribute.

The entire front end is a "bolt on" swap. Just a lot more bolts. ;-) Tail panel takes some welding though. My grille isn't done in argent though, it's a charcoal metallic color.

I like the look of the charcoal metallic that you painted on your grille. My car happens to be white and that color has a nice contrast.

Man that chin spoiler looks killer on your car!

Thanks! :D

It's, uh, a *cough* *cough* '67 Camaro spoiler from OER. Hard to beat for $35, the fit is pretty good. Drill a few holes for hardware, maybe a couple minutes with a heat gun if you're particular, and it looks like it belongs there. I've had worse fits using parts that were intended for my car. #-o
