PCV Recommendations.

Hi Gang,

I am about to install a pcv valve on new valve covers that came with my engine. Before I cut out the holes would like to ask your recommendation on a quality pcv valve, breather system.

318 with 302 heads (1.88/1.60 valves)
cam: Hydraulic
Intake Duration (gross): 256
Exhaust Duration (gross): 262
Intake Duration (.050”): 204
Exhaust Duration (.050”): 208
Intake Valve Lift*: .420"
Exhaust Valve Lift*: .420"
Holley 600cfm
manifolds/Accurate exhaust
Vacuum stays around 19 at idle

I was at a local speedshop the other day. I mentioned needing an additional hole in the cover for the PCV valve. The guy there says it is dumb to continue to use the PCV valve, as I do not have to get emissions tested anymore

The alternative is to go with the old fashioned open breather tube to the ground. But of course, the crankcase will not get cleaned out at well and you will have more sludge and condensation inside. So 'that guy' was the only dumb thing in your recent conversation....LOL

To the OP, any decent PCV that fits on a comparably sized engine ought to work fine.

Unless he has a better way to pull blow by, condensation etc.. Out of a street car crank case I would never set foot in that speed shop again!

I have had bad luck with all my PCV set ups(cheap), where the leak oil and won't seal up....

I bought a billet aluminum PCV somewhere a while back(But can't remember where and can't find it) and plan to use it with a WIX #42997 or something close on my current build.

I don't have a pic of the valve itself, but you can imagine a valve with a hose on it I'm sure.
Had some PEX pipe fittings and stuff left over from re plumbing the house so I used it to attach the elbow to the air cleaner base.
I plumbed into the air cleaner bottom side (inside the filter area) and ran a section of 5/8 hose from there to the cap on the valve cover so it gets filtered air sucked in through that and it crosses over through the engine to the PCV valve on the other cover.

The PCV valve is T'd into the power brake booster vacuum at the back of the carb base and the valve covers both have baffles.

The little twisted wire is so there is no chance of anything going down the intake just in case anything ever comes loose.

Works great.

It's friggin cold out there.
It's just a brass 5/8 PEX elbow and I moto tooled the opening in the base for it.

Thanks for the reply. They are the MP aluminum valve covers. I have punched out the holes and added baffles. Just don't want to start Dremmeling until I find an optimal (quality) pcv.

My setup is similar to yours is except can't tie into the air cleaner because it is a low profile base.

Understandable.
You might have to just run a decent filter unit for your air inlet in that case.
As far as the grommet for the valve cover that the valve goes into, some of them vary on the OD as well as the thickness for the cover material but where the valve seats is pretty standard.

These are the ones for those covers, and then you can pick out a valve.
The one for the breather/filter unit is cut out if using a filter or cap, or left the way it is if using it just as a plug.

One thing I might mention is that the baffles usually make it kind of a pain in the butt to add oil, but if you end up with the cap/filter grommet with the 1 inch ID you can cut a plastic quart oil bottle and sand, file, moto or whatever the threads for the bottle cap off and it works perfect as a funnel cause you don't have to hold it while adding oil.
I have to also pull my PCV valve while adding oil or it burps back out on the valve cover. (because of the baffles being so close to the opening)

Just some thoughts to hopefully make your life a little easier.
