Need 65 Barracuda info ** Updated **

You guys have so much knowledge, Thanks for sharing.

Ok here is a curve for you guys. lol

I have a 65 and have the build sheet. It is a Commando car with the emblems, 273HP, 4-speed, 7 1/4 axle non-suregrip, Sway bar, Xtra leaf, Thicker torsion bars, Exhaust cutout in valance, 9 inch brakes, 13 inch tires. All holds true on the buildsheet found under the carpet below the heater.

The Rallye pack cars had 13" wheels- without the front sway bar- but sway bar was available

Anyone ever seen the Resonator without the stainless bright cover?
My 65 Valiant 100 (in1 966) was plain black and the Rallye pack car I had was also.
Anyone know if all the Valiant Commando cars did not have the stainless cover on resonator?

Also- I've never owned a V/8 with 9 inch brakes- all have been 10"

Have also seen build sheet under carpet and back seats

Hi Gib,
Black resonator in upper right

The current owner says he didn't replace the motor, and he said the previous owners son said it was the original motor. I know that people can say whatever they want, but is there a possibility that if this was a late production vehicle that they may have put a 66 motor in it? The sequence number on this one is 174303, which seems like a pretty high number. Does anyone know the production numbers for 1965?

What size are the intake bolts?? If they have 1/2" heads, the motor is a 65 or earlier, if they require a 9/16" wrench, it is a 66 and later! The assembly date of the motor is on the front of the block, stamped under the drivers side head! That, coupled with the casting date of the block will tell you when this motor was manufactured!

Look at the drivers side of the block below the head. It will be stamped with 273 and a date code. Let us know that and we can get you closer.

I had the 1st 1965 273 4bbl / 4 speed Dart GT out of Brads Motors in Fall River Mass... It had the all BLACK Resonator !!! The Dart was a "Charger" motor vs. the "Commando" of the Valiant !

As a matter of fact, no Formula S was factory equipped with an 8 3/4 as standard equipment until the 340 came out in 68! It was an option starting in late 65, so Joel is partially correct!!

And a note to the OP, take a pair of calipers with you and measure those torsion bars, not an easy or even thought about swap!! If they don't read .870, they're not the big bars and probably not formula S!!

Agree. The factory issued a letter to dealers around mid year to replace the 7 1/4" rear with the 8.75 on a warranty repair. Mainly pertained to the 4 speed cars. NHRA followed suit by a rule change that allowed the 8.75 rear in the 65.

I forgot to note that there's a copy of that letter on the D Dart site.

That confirms what I heard. Sort of a warranty replacement/"oops we underbuilt" it deal. My first 65 Barracuda V8 had 9's stock, and with 5 people in the car, I couldnt lock them up from 50 .

My '65 V8 also had 9". After replacing the 7-1/4 twice, I went to the 8-3/4. Been in there since '74.

The muffler was a straight-thru type on the S with the resonator. I have a pair on mine since '74, but no one makes these anymore.

If there is rust on the floor boards, you should look at the front frame rails on top behind the shocks. There are 2 gussets that allowed dirt to build up between them resulting in that area rusting through, depending on what part of the country the car was from. I replaced both of mine.

As for the uni-body structural integrity, I think the rocker panels were the stiffening connectors between the front and rear frames. These were fabricated with three layers of steel. However, I did add frame connectors.

You can purchase the resonator for the single exhaust system. I have one and it really looks good. Stamped authorized by Chrysler. Paid 210 including shipping. Now if I could just finish the paint so I could install it. Can send a pic and order information if you are interested

The muffler, I have been told the turbo mufflers are similar to the original as far as sound and flow
some may disagree, but that is the way I am heading unless someone has a better idea
