I have a clutch fan that I am trying to use on my 70 Duster 340. It is a 20" fan off a 86 Dodge Ram. The clutch is about 3 .25 " thick. With it all mocked up on the car the clutch itself is 1/2" off the core. The blades are 1" off the core and about 1/2" off the tanks. Is this to close? I could get the Hayden 2765 clutch that is shorter but I have read they may not be strong enough for a steel mopar fan. Any thoughts or input would be great.
Thanks Mike.

If the engine doesn't move it would be just fine, but if it ever even moves a half inch, well...

Some of these guys have all the part numbers of that stuff that works best so maybe someone will be around with it before to long.

if you have a fan shroud, then rule of thumb is half of the fan inside the shroud, the other half sticking out

My son's is about 1/4 of an inch. It's been that way over 4 yrs, and he is a very spirited driver. The engine's forward movement is limited by a chain, so the rad's gonna hafta move back, and only a full frontal impact might cause an interference, meaning bodywork and rad may be in order.. lol

No shroud, no overheat, even on hottest summer day.

This is a stock 7 blade clutched motorhome/van unit, the wrecker had 3 on the wall .. $30 each..

hope it helps . . cheers

There is little chance of the engine moving forward, but it will rotate on the mounts a bit. If the fan is only 1/4" below the top of the radiator tank and would hit the tank if the fan blades moved up this 1/4", then I would be worried. If it won't hit the tank with a 1/2" move, then that should be good to go.

You hit one of those parking lot curbs/stops, the engine'll move near 1/4" on the rubber mounts, hence the chain.

The actual fan is set back to allow for the clutch unit, giving ample clearance between blades and tanks.. see pic.

I don't follow you about the engine moving (forward?) if you hit curb stops. I don't normally "hit" curb stops. One of my cars has the clutch unit so close to the radiator that I can barely slide a belt past it and though I don't have a chain that you are referring to, I've never had the clutch hit the radiator. Maybe I'm not understanding what you are saying.

There is/ was Jag clutch that was shorter, any someone recently had a thread on here that Hayden is making one.

Your statement infers you've hit at least one, as have many others, and likely came to an abrupt stop. Wouldn't it have been a piss-off, if the engine had shifted that tiny bit you got, and twisted a hole into your rad..??

A rubber mounted engine can definately move forward with inertia, and depending on the mounts coindition, it could certainly, and has caused interference with a rad mounted so close to the fan. I've seen the impressions of such many times, (reason unknown) and amazed they don't leak..lol

I'm not a gambler, hence the chain.. $3.00 insurance.

Many cars, particularly imports had/have engine movement limiters..

I have a few pics I just took. Maybe ok, I think I can get a belt to go on without removing fan.

Looks good, may I ask what the shroud is from.???

You can upgrade to a 7 blade fan if that one's not enuff.

thnx. . cheers

I need the shorter clutch # for mine if anyone has a part #. I can't even get my fan on because of a larger core. I will measure mine and post it.

The shroud is from a 87 Dodge Ram with air. I had to cut 1" off each side and then it fits perfect on my new 26" Champion Rad. The blade is 20" . If I could find a 20" non clutch blade I would use it, but this is what I have avalable. No wrecking yards within 100 miles from me and none with old cars.

The fan is only supposed to be 1/3 covered by the shroud. This will put the face of that clutch quite a large distance from the radiator itself.

Nice job, Thnx very much.

Mo-homes with 440's had the 20 inch clutch fans I've used twice now,, juuust fit.. $$ right.

Clutch is the way to go, jmo..

cheers
