ok guys i'm new to the forum but it seems like there's a lot of experience and know-how here.

what i'm working on is a '67 dart with a 273 that is getting a holley 600 carb on it. i'm curious about the throttle linkage.

i'm used to rigging things up and making things work, so i'm not too worried, but i figured since so many people have done basically the same thing, does anyone here know exactly what holley parts i can get to do the job correctly? i looked and found some holley throttle lever extensions or something but that still doesn't seem to be the actual piece i need to hook the cable to the carb.

same deal with the kickdown lever. i think i read somewhere i need to extend it which isnt a problem. but how do you guys recommend hooking it to the carb itself?

I'm not familiar with the 273, as I can't remember, lol. It's been since the mid 1970's since I had one in a car. So I'm not well versed on the particular linkage.

I think you may need this:

I'm not 100% sure if that will fit on the Holley.

And this:

i just put a 1850 holley on my 273 and used the ball and linkage i already had everything seemed to work fine

yeah the piece in the picture looks right for the kickdown. i may just see if the old stuff unscrews from the 2 barrel that came off it.

my throttle doesnt have the ball end on it. its a piece with 2 holes that slides over a pin on the throttle lever then gets a small cotter pin to hold it.

You still need the geometry to be correct, which is why you need the adapter, I'm pretty sure. When you open the throttle the throttle pressure linkage (kickdown) needs to be pushed back, not pulled forward. You'll burn up your trans if it isn't right.

I was helping a guy a few weeks ago, he was trying to install a Holley carb on a 383 with just the pin in the pic. It opened the throttle just fine, but it was pushing the throttle pressure linkage forward. He didn't know it needed to go back....

First you will need the stock 68-73 340 throttle cable bracket:

Mancini Racing Throttle Cable Mounting Bracket

Then get the Holley throttle bracket Part number 20-7:

It attaches to the carb like this:

Then take this throttle pin/stud.

And it goes in this hole. Caution: You may have to rotate the head of the top bolt to allow the cable to go on as it is a tight fit there, but it can be done...

Then make an extension for your current kickdown lever that goes to the carb, the 340 bracket is about 1 1/2" forward of the stock 318 2 bbl location, so you will have to extend the throttle rod about 1 1/2" - 2" with threaded rod (match the stock thread - it's fine thread) and it should look like this:

Here's a close up view. I threaded the hex stock and added threaded rod. There is an aftermarket piece to do this, but I don't have the link, maybe someone can post it...

i have the slide type kickdown not the ball type. honestly thats less of a priority than the throttle itself. i drove my z28 with no kickdown for 2 years, when i needed to downshift i did it haha.

i was mostly curious about the off the shelf parts that are used to convert it. basically i need the holley bracket and the stock kickdown stud attaches to it.

i'm thinking there has to be a better way of moving that stuff than paying $34 for a cable bracket though. there may be some fab work happening in the garage tomorrow when it rains!

It's not a 'kickdown', it's a throttle pressure linkage which applies gradual pressure inside the trans as you accelerate.

Without the throttle pressure linkage hooked up and operating properly....you will be rebuilding the transmission very soon.

i know what it does. its what tells the transmission that the throttle is still open when youre accelerating, dont upshift yet. its what allows you to control the shift points of the tranny with your throttle. i was just jokingly making the point that an automatic can be controlled manually if needed and its not going to immediately kill it. calling it a kickdown lever is a habit i guess. ive seen it done and had to do it myself. its held together for 50 years im sure if i need to run it up and down my street a couple times this week while im doing some tuning it will survive haha.

this is what i plan on trying to use as soon as i can anyway and do away with the stupid rods and levers all over the place. $70 is a little pricey but it simplifies it a lot. i just figured i would see what everyone suggested about hooking up the stock linkage since i know so may guys run holleys on their cars

i got my throttle lever extension and installed it. so i'll be ok on the throttle cable, tomorrow i'm going to extend the trans linkage so it reaches and lines up properly. so what's the procedure to adjust it? where is a good baseline to start? should the lever on the carb be pushing it as soon as it opens or should there be space in there?

Proper set up procedure is detailed in factory service manuals. It aint perfect in every manual though.
They'll tell you to pin or block the lever at trans in forward most position. Then they fail to say remove that pin or block after that initial step is completed. I guess they figure most could read the unwritten words.
