Ads do not bother me none...of course I work and it ain't window shopping for me....

Not everybody likes and dislikes the same thing. While some may can simply ignore the ads, they get on my nerves. And I am not the only one.

It's not just about who likes what. There are plenty of members here, myself included, that use the classifieds and sale ads to buy parts to complete their projects and keep their cars running. Now, since I'm pretty sure you don't own an A-body anymore, that's not you. So maybe the ads don't have any utility for you, but you're not the only one here. Buying parts here has let me get a lot more for my money than buying everything I need from eBay, or spending days and days driving all over to go to swap meets that never have any Mopar parts, or worse, buying everything new. And I've gotten some great deals on parts I'm using on my car now, and more than a few for my other projects. It's how I can afford to have as many projects as I do.

You listed a ton of parts on here a few years ago Rob. Just because you're not selling parts here anymore doesn't mean no one else should be able to. Scrolling is really easy. Even clicking on the button to go to the next page is pretty simple.

After the 30 days and the ad is closed. The ad will still be there correct, you will just have to PM the person to see if it is still for sale. correct?

Yes

I kind of like the 30 day since posted idea but what keeps someone from bumping the ad to forever

Nothing - but then the item must still be available or they wouldn't be bumping. The whole point here is to keep ads from being posted in when the owner isn't here or the owner forgot to mark the ad as sold. When someone posts in a thread, then its brought to the top of the list. So an ad from 2013 for example, could be top on the list again.

Wouldn't happen if the adds were closed from the start. Muddy is how it is now.

I've considered that. Would solve a lot of my headaches.

Could the classifieds forum be changed to be by subscription like the "news and politics" forum? That way people that are really upset by sale ads could "opt out" without effecting those of us that want to see the ads? I always need parts. Even if I don't need parts I still sometimes buy them.

No. We get a lot of new people because of the for sale ads.

If the thread is closed, will we still be able to leave trader feedback?

Current requirement is that you have to post in the thread to leave feedback.....if we PM the seller of a closed thread and complete a trade, we can't leave feedback.

I like the idea of closing after 30 days inactive. But, could they still be marked 'sold' later? I think a lot of guys have gotten better at marking them, so if they can't go back the thread will always look like the item is still available. Effectively making more 'open' threads, just not on the front page. Same with people opening a new thread instead of bumping it. The original thread is still there and looks like it never sold.

Craigslist ads have an expiration...but the posts disappear entirely whether or not it sells.

If this IS the whole point, then 30 days is too aggressive to eliminate a 3 year old post from returning.
Active sellers will create additional threads to sell the same part, effectively INCREASING the number of For Sale ads that appear as New Posts!

I agree with the point that @zkx14 made here...If I'm creating additional threads every 30 days to advertise the same part, when the part finally sells, there are multiple threads to be marked as sold.

Perhaps there is a better interval to use that would solve the problem described, without increasing the efforts to sell a used part...

Thanks for reading,

Yes I did. I also had to give them to the scrap yard, because no one would even come get them for free.......that aside, you seem to think I have something against the for sale forums. I don't. I'm glad they are there. I simply don't like the bombardment of sometimes freshly bumped ads showing up in the new posts option taking up almost the entire first page.

It's all good. Since my opinion seems to be in the vast minority, or nobody else that feels the same has the balls to step up and say it, I'll just shut up.

Maybe just because he's gone during the day.

As am I since I have been working since April of 2015 and am now back to work full time. I took his comment as an insinuation I was not working.

While I agree that anyone selling much on here should cough up for Gold..., How bout letting non golds bump at say 3weeks. That would eliminate the need for repost, but not overwhelm the board with bumps and keeps the thread live for posting more than 30days. Or, maybe a little longer- 45day repost allowed with 60 day drop might serve the purpose better. But again, to me the Sold marker is far more important than if its on the front page. I have been lucky enough to get some newly posted items. More often though,I am using search and looking back at least a few months. I think most of the 'super deals' are gone on the first pass through anyway. It does help if sellers give a little more thought to there descriptions for them to be found with search.

Are we swimming thru mud yet? Dad use to say" If it ain't broke, don't fix it" Easiest solution is come up with a expiration date, And eliminate the ad. If the item is still for sale the seller will relist it. Wait kinda sounds like what Craigslist does?

You also encourage people to stop posting ads due to your own personal policy of no email or phone number allowed unless people pay you extra.

Every site out there that I list stuff on requires contact information or no ad, but I will not list stuff here anymore unless your policy changes. No fees with the sites that require real contact information either.

Real world contact information also discourages scams & scammers, it gives you an address or number to google to see what comes up.

No. That does 2 things.

1. It stops the drive by people that just sign up to post a for sale ad and never return to the site because they can be reached by phone/email. Allowing this would ENCOURAGE scammers. At least this way they have to come back to the site to answer questions and finish the transaction.

2. It stops most members from getting spammed to death because their email is out there publically. Gold members make this choice on their own, and that was a decision the Gold Members made back when I created the rule. I disagreed with it back then and still do. But since its unlikely a drive by is going to pay to become a gold member just to put his phone number in an ad.
By the way, the one repeat scammer we have, does exactly this. He PMs members in the wanted forums, asks them to contact him via email, and never returns to the site. We have worked hard to keep him from bothering the members through various actions we have taken to stop him.

I have had a number of times where someone asked me to remove information months later because it came back to haunt them. One member was having trouble getting a security clearance because he had his personal info in a post.

Those were my primary reasons for the no emails and no phone numbers in posts rule. I don't just do things willy nilly, and most often there are many reasons you guys haven't thought of which factor into my decisions. I am always looking out for the good of the site and the good of our members.

I'm sorry to hear that. My policy will not be changing. If that's a problem for you, you have my apologies.

I like it the way it is right now. I seldom bump my 340/360 manifold ad so that I don't get too many orders. But once someone finds my old add (even though it may be months old) they contact me and bump me to the top. Once my add has been bumped to the top by the potential buyer it almost always gets me more sales. Also my 340/360 manifold ad has lots of information from questions other members have asked about what manifolds work and don't work on their cars. I'd hate to lose all that info that others might need. But....that's just me!!
I don't think that I've bumped my ad (myself) for over a year but I've still sold numerous sets of manifolds because someone does a search and bumps my ad to the top. If you change the system my ad will no longer get bumped and many members will never read all the info that's in the ad???
I know that I'm a special case but you did ask?????

Good Luck with your decision!!

As a Gold Member, you can bump the ad yourself, or repost it to keep it fresh and incorporate info people have asked about, making the ad even more compelling..
