For Sale Ads now Close 30 days after last posting.

Hi all --

I have now set it up that threads in the For Sale forums will automatically close after there has been no posting for 30 days.

This is being done in order to prevent someone from dragging up an old ad and posting in it.

This DOES NOT mark the item as sold or found - it merely closes the thread from further posting.

I am contemplating limiting the total amount of time for an ad to 30 days from the start. (instead of from the last post) Should I do this?

Very good solution!!

To me it's a no brainer to close the ad when there is no activity. People reply to those old inactive threads after they use the for sale search function here.

The buyer could just as well take the SAME exact amount of effort to hit the PM button rather than the reply button. Right now the reply clutters the use of FABO for all others when 98% of the time the part is not still for sale or the seller is long gone.

No. We get a lot of new people because of the for sale ads.

True.

But those new people come to see fresh ads. Not stale, unsold, regurgitated, and dusty ads from 4-6 months ago.

So I like the idea closing the for sale ad altogether after a certain period of time. 30 days from the start. Whether you are a gold member or not. Whether you bump it or not.

Well I think it's a fine solution. What your job situation has to do with being annoyed at seeing the same 20 adds every 7 days for a year, now that boggles the mind.
....and that means what exactly?
Rusty i'd like to know that answer to that also.

How about deleting sold items to save space?

That's a good idea except that many of us use the "SOLD" items to determine how much to ask when we're selling something. More often than not I don't know how much an item is worth so I do a search to see what similar items have sold for. If all the SOLD items are deleted then that feature is gone forever???
Although...it is a good idea.

So it seems to me that the point of contention for a lot of people is the constant bumping of adds that land them in the "New Posts" section of the site. I, like many, use practically only that section to navigate this site so I understand the "annoyance" of seeing the same ads bumped to hell and back and in groups taking up pages. I agree with @72bluNblu, that just scrolling past is no big deal, but obviously some want a better solution. I also agree with Joey that they shouldn't be hidden from "New Posts" or the rest of the site because I've seen an ad there and proceeded to buy the item, so it is helpful.

Possibly we could allow new for sale ads in the new posts section, then after 30 days of initial posting, bumping the ad does not bump the ad in the new posts section but only in the for sale sub-forum it was originated in.

One request.....Would it be too difficult or even feasible to notify a member when his/her ad is going to be "closed"?

thanks,
Treblig

Why....So they can bump it ? Why even have the new rule ?

I say, let the site be a site. All the Policing makes for a less atractive site.

And if you are going to restict non members from bumping, enforce the rule. Instead of letting
the chosen few bump whenever they want.

Uh, nobody has special rights when it comes to bumping. Sure we may miss a few but the rules are the same across the board. You guys don't see how many get cut.

And back to the original topic of the thread, ya, close them after 30 days of inactivity.

I bumped one time and got jumped on with all these warnings. Good lord, you would have thought it was the end of the world...That crap still shows everytime I log on. GOMN.

I can go on the for sale adds right now a see members with 6,7,8 bumps without as much as a peep.

Whatever........Carry on.

I don't quite understand the premise??? You could say that someone bumping a 5 day old ad is "dragging up an old ad and posting it"!! 5 days, 20 days or one year, it's still "an old ad". The only difference is that this new rule forces the seller to rewrite the ad and re-post pics that he/she had already done. Sometimes if the item doesn't sell (after a period of time) the seller will bump the ad and lower the price. Having to completely redo the ad makes unnecessary work/time for members that was never required in the past. And in the end...his/her ad will still be at the top of the list and the "old ad" will also remain in the "closed" status. So the number of times that the same (similar) ad will appear will multiply over time. I think things should be done to "improve" the experience for the members and not make it more time consuming or difficult.

In the beginning Joey asked, "Should I do this?"
My answer is "No".

Now everyone else can chime in.............................

How about a COMPLETELY separate site? "MoparForSaleOnly.com? You could put ALL the for sale ads THERE from all the different sites and have a for sale only site. Have links to it on each site.

Not exactly what I asked....

Also not exactly. Although that's why I was contemplating having them close 30 days from when they were made.
This is an example of why I made this change: [SOLD] - 67-76 v8 drop centerlink

That thread was started April 13, 2015 -- It was apparently sold somewhere near that time. A few weeks ago, a new member found the ad and dragged it back up to the top. One of our mods had to go in and mark it sold. This change prevents that.

Personally, I think if something doesn't sell within a month -- then maybe the member needs to rewrite the ad. Maybe add some more photos, change the price, whatever to make it more sellable.

Feel free to report those ads and we'll look at them.
Go to mechanical parts for sale. No fewer than 6 on the first page.
Maybe let everyone bump their add ?
Certainly would make it fair across the board, and give the mods a break.

I actually enjoy looking at old parts for sale adds. The parts that fall through the cracks often at a lower selling price.
Looks like youve already made your decision, so all the dialog is a moot point.

It is fair. Gold members can bump, non gold cannot.

As far as letting everyone do it, we did that years ago and the place was a mess. As it is I get people complaining about the gold members bumping ads and filling up the page too much.

I only asked if I should make it from the start of the ad instead of the last post.

Rusty had a good idea.
Maybe make the Parts section all to itself, and not on the main page ?

Anyways, Its your site, its a Great site. Cheers.

I totally agree that something should be done about folks who neglect to mark their thread as "SOLD" once they have sold an item, is there any other way you could get the desired effect?? Like....no advertising for 30 days if you don't mark your ad as "sold". At least that way, the only person that would affected is the person(s) who is/are causing the problem.

Not without adding a lot of work and conflict for the moderators -- and then leading to accusations of favoritism because we missed something.

Believe me....I realize that you have a difficult job. Your job may be fun at times but you also must make decisions that make some people happy and other people unhappy. I'm sure that you and the other moderators are underappreciated so as far as I'm concerned "THANKS" for your dedication and hard work as it relates to this web site. I jumped into this conversation to give my opinion....I've done that, I know you'll do what you think is best and I'm sure everyone appreciates the fact that you "asked" for our opinions!!

THE SIMPLEST SOLUTION IS USUALLY THE CORRECT ONE!!

I am against closing the ads after 30 days for any reason. I bump my ads for unsold items every month or two, sometimes longer. I disagree with those who say that after 30 days you need to change up the ad/price/pics. A-bodies are arcane things to begin with and most things are not in huge demand. You think if someone is unsuccessful after 30 days trying to sell say a rear bumper bumper for a 1965 Valiant it is because of his price/description/pics? There is just not a huge demand for many of these items. I have been trying to sell a convertible top frame for a 1967 Dart for years. Every 6 to 8 months I bump the ad. Now I have to find the photos and rewrite a whole new ad? For those who would argue that my ad can be found by using the search feature and I can be PM'ed, I would counter that if that is the case we should eliminate bumping all together.

If you have an account with Craigslist they let you see all of your expired ads and repost them at anytime. Perhaps Joey can come up with a way to send your ad back to the top of the page without having to type some sort of reply.

As an aside, I am a Gold member but I rarely bump an ad on a weekly basis. I get annoyed seeing the same ads pop to the top every few days so I do not do that myself. I think bumping every couple of weeks is more than adequate. My $.02.

No need to save space.

You hear that Karl AKA KrazyKuda...Joey has all kinds of extra room now......Maybe you can get your added space for your inbox you have wanted and been asking for on here for years....You said 1000 message storage is not enough.......LOL
