For Sale Ads now Close 30 days after last posting.

I am against closing the ads after 30 days for any reason. I bump my ads for unsold items every month or two, sometimes longer. I disagree with those who say that after 30 days you need to change up the ad/price/pics. A-bodies are arcane things to begin with and most things are not in huge demand. You think if someone is unsuccessful after 30 days trying to sell say a rear bumper bumper for a 1965 Valiant it is because of his price/description/pics? There is just not a huge demand for many of these items. I have been trying to sell a convertible top frame for a 1967 Dart for years. Every 6 to 8 months I bump the ad. Now I have to find the photos and rewrite a whole new ad? For those who would argue that my ad can be found by using the search feature and I can be PM'ed, I would counter that if that is the case we should eliminate bumping all together.

If you have an account with Craigslist they let you see all of your expired ads and repost them at anytime. Perhaps Joey can come up with a way to send your ad back to the top of the page without having to type some sort of reply.

As an aside, I am a Gold member but I rarely bump an ad on a weekly basis. I get annoyed seeing the same ads pop to the top every few days so I do not do that myself. I think bumping every couple of weeks is more than adequate. My $.02.

He said close them not delete them. The text and pictures would still be there. All you need to do is a quick copy and paste job.

While I understand why threads are now being closed after 30 days, I don't agree with it. Here's why - I have a car for sale. I am still getting replies from people interested in it, but it is "Sale Pending". I wanted to go back to the ad and add a post that states it is "Sale Pending", but I can't because the thread is locked. I don't want to mark it "Sold" until it is actually sold, because as we all know, sometimes these deals fall through. But it is kind of unfair for somebody to see the ad, get all fired up about it, only to find out the car is not available anymore. Seems like there is a better way...

I had a 68 notchback listed "for sale" here for many months before it sold. That buyer pulled the part or 2 that he needed, then put it on Craigs List. He got 100% of his money back within 2 weeks, without every snapping a new pic.
So I learned something. The vert' project mentioned in my signature will go on Craigs List.

still doesn't stop the carpet bumping

I have been using the "ignore" feature on this forum when it comes to the members that mass bump their ads all the time in the for sale sections.
So i voluntarily don't get to see any of their postings.
So this morning when i clicked onto the mechanical parts for sale section, i only got to see 5 ads on the first page.
Somebody on my ignore list carpet bombed the page with their ads.
I can probably figure out who of the 4, that i ignore that continually do this, all the time.

I was under the understanding, with this new board the administrator was going to do something about this, but aparently not.
Still the wild, wild west, out there in the for sale pages, and nothing has changed.

What i propose is limit the number of ads one can post at a time during the day, say 3 ads, or so, and see what happens.
Me personally, would love to abide by that rule, and i frequently post, but don't carpet bomb the section and then find out you are now on page 3 in an hours time.

Long overdue for a format change, other than having your ad close after 30 days time frame.

I had planned on using a classified ad system that would have accomplished this, but the author became unreliable so I chose not to use that system.

The only way I know to fully stop the problem you describe is to not allow people to post in for sale threads at all.

If you are a buyer and see something in a old ad that may be still for sale, start a conversation with the seller to inquire about it. The ads shouldn't be open for ever. Every time a question is asked the ad gets bumped to the front. We as moderators spend most of our time on the first few pages reviewing sale ads to make sure the sale rules are followed. Also, it would make our jobs so much easier if everyone would simply mark it sold when it is done. Sellers here are placing ads free of charge to a specific group of buyers. The least they could do is follow the rules.

Let me ask you this then, if an system can't be implemented to stop the carpet bombers from posting a full page of ads at one time?
Can you just put in the "Rules" that you can only post so many ads at a given time, limit the amount of them?
Guess it would be self policed if the members follow the rules or not, in all the for sale sections.
But a few are taking serious advantage for themselves the way it is now.
My 2 cents on the subject, anyway.

The best way is to have the For Sale Ads seperate from other forums like General etc.... Know way to do that?. It would really help if members that placed ads were Gold. Not only would it help our Forum, but I think it helps when others buy, they know they are not just coming posting selling and falling of the face of the earth.

Since only since only Gold members can bump posts there really should be a limit on how many threads get bumped in a day. 5 threads a day per forum would sound fair to me. There are only a few carpet bombers. They should be easy to spot and a simple pm/conversation should correct the issue. Then maybe I could take the carpet bombing members off of ignore.

It could go something like this.

Parts/Car Seller:
  1. Ads may NOT be placed by businesses. If you are a business contact the site Admin, Joeychgo for information on becoming a vendor.
  2. Have a descriptive Title. Don't just post A Body Parts in the title. Be more descriptive so the buyers know at least a little about what your selling. (Example Title: Duster Suspension Parts)
  3. No Bumping of ads.
  4. FABO Gold Members may bump their ads once every 3 days. No more then 5 ads may be bumped per day in each specific For Sale forum.
  5. No repeated posting of same ad for 30 days unless the thread was closed and the item became available again. Threads will close automatically after 30 days.
  6. Please try to limit each thread to 1 part unless the parts are directly related. (ie Duster Suspension Parts)
  7. eBay auctions are permitted, but please give some detail of the item as well as the eBay link. DO NOT post just the eBay item number, post the link. Same thing goes with Craigslist or other 3rd party sites.
  8. You must Post either an Asking Price or Make offer with a BIN Price. (We prefer you post an asking price)
  9. Location (Preferably City & State) MUST be in the ad
  10. Please mark the thread as SOLD when the item(s) are sold. (We don't delete ads - please don't ask us to)
  11. Do NOT post email addresses or phone numbers in your ad or in any response to an ad. Use the PM feature. Only FABO Gold Members may place email and phone numbers in ads.
  12. Do not argue with others in the thread.
  13. Photos may help sell the part/car

I truly hope that Joey won't implement anything that will make more work for the Mods in the Classified Forums. It's easy to just scroll by the ads you don't want to see.

I see plenty of 4-sale/Wanted ads that get questions and/or sales from WAY back in pages daily. Why ruin what we have by complaining that your ad isn't on the 1st page? The reason it isn't is because we have a lot of traffic here....:)

Please don't take my post wrong as I'm not posting this towards any particular member!

40 thousand members, there should be enough unread interesting threads here to keep anyone from worrying about for sale ads...holy cow.
Theres other options. ...donate to auction/fundraiser, lower your price, sell on ebay, craigslist, racingjunk, kijiji.
Mods get paid nada and im pretty sure they have to pay for their gold membership. And they should monitor more closely? ?? Lol

When 3, 4, 5, people constantly carpet bomb the for sale pages with their ads, the rest of the members don't take the time, effort, to keep searching pages after the first few.
Then the poor guys, members, that have only one, two ads, of their own listed, they get buried pretty darn quick, that nobody, or very few are going to read, or find.
Tell you what.
Make me a moderator in the for sale sections, and i will volunteer my time, and police the section, if a change is implemented, to making the for sale pages a better place to read.

So your parts aren't selling because of what you're calling members who sell a lot of parts? I beg to differ....

I think you've sold quite a few parts here & truly don't see a basis for changing EVERYTHING :)

My advertised parts sell regularly, all the time.
Havent had problems finding buyers for the brake, suspension, parts that i rebuild, then advertise on the web sites.
The complaint that i and others have, is members that take advantage on the site by filling up an entire page by posting 10, 15, 20, of their ads all at one time.
I can become a carpet bomber, poster, and bring up every ad of mine, and then fill up probably a whole page, but i choose not to go that route and have a bit of courtesy, and decorum, by not flooding the pages of 15 + ads of my own, and then irritating other readers, in the for sale forum.
Maybe i should become a member of the carpet bomber member club then and bring back to life every ad that i posted.

There is more to offer here on fabo than for sale ads...do a write up on a how to....offer up advice/experience etc.. I see a few members that sell a LOT on here and that is all they offer "parts for sale"
They offer little else.
Im still looking for reasonably priced sbp front disc brake dust shields.

Take a look at the "Sticky" at the top of the Suspension page on this forum in regards rebuilding of lower control arms.
I have posted numerous replies in that section in the helping out of getting things like that accomplished.
Also i regularly reply in the Brake, and Suspension sections when i have an answer to someones question, that i am capable of answering.
But i don't open lots of other sections, as i don't have any attention span to get involved in other pages that i don't have any interest in.

Yes, I agree....

The members you mention aren't really taking advantage of anything....Scroll right along if you choose. I don't understand why you can't ignore posts that don't interest you? That's what I try to do....

I mentioned earlier that there are numerous threads brought back to the top that were many pages back in the Classifieds.

Why do you think that Joey decided to close ads that were 30+ days old?

Ugh....Thanks Steve...:BangHead:

I wasn't directing my comments solely at you. It was a general comment. I understand your frustration. I found I worry about the stuff I can control. Stuff I can't I TRY to not let bother me, life beyond fabo and for sale ads.

Ugh....Thanks Steve...:BangHead:

You missed the post that stated i have the carpet bomber posters on the ignore list, so i don't see their ads, but i know they must have posted a group of ads because i only saw 5 ads on page one, this morning, as an example.
Ok, sign me up then.
I am going to join up with the rest of the carpet bombers in the for sale section, and the next time i will bring up every old ad of mine, and fill up the entire page 1 with ads of my own.
If they can do it, i will do it.
Fair enough then?
How's that sound?
Then just going by the rules.

@hemi71x I didn't miss your post.....You've admitted that your parts sell here, but you don't like how the Classifieds are run? I give up....

Ugh...I'm sorry if I've offended anyone. I certainly never mean to & only do my best to help here. What a thankless job I've volunteered for 4+ years :(

The rules are simple & for ALL of us to follow. As far as I can see, that's what's going on here! If members continue to complain, the rules may change for everyone....Think about it before you post again!

RANT OVER....I'm out

No offense here C. I.could only imagine the time effort and energy involved.
Lots here appreciate your efforts and what you specifically do.

And as stated in one other reply here, i for one, am fully willing to go along with any posting change to the for sale forum.
It affects me, that's fine, as it will all the others.
