Did you put the two plugs behind the cam plate?

I have had many 340's and none have had plugs behind the cam plate. I don't know when they started using them, at one time I was going to put them in because the owner wanted them in but the plug was so long that it would cover up the oil galley hole going to the right lifter galley from the front main, so long as the plate is flat you don't need them.

I know they started using them at some point but in the late 70's and early 80's I was buying every 340 I could find, picking out all the best parts for my motors and selling off the rest. I had 4 std bore blocks till recently down to 1 now but none of them had plugs in them. maybe they should have been in there but I never had a problem with oil pressure.
 
Well, i got this engine pulled and the pan off, it looked good. Pulled the pump and it looked sealed but a tiny spot by the rip. My next question is what other things should i look for just in case this isnt the problem? im going to prime it before it leaves the stand, what is a realistic oul pressure i should be shooting for? I put a new pump and seal in just in case there was an issue with the old one that was in there.

I had an engine that had low oil pressure due to the two plugs not installed behind the camshaft thrust plate.. We proved it with a priming shaft and saw oil squirt 6 feet from behind the plate... It didn't squirt it all the time, one time it wouldn't then the next time it did...

I always install them since and I get 45-45 psi oil pressure at idle...
 
Yeah, I put all the necessary plugs in from the kit but the culprit looks to be the pump, at least that's what I'm hoping for.

I have also ran into block's with oversize lifter bores. They usually have a small diamond on the lifter bore to indicate a oversize bore. But sometimes there just wore out. The cam bearing can lose a lot of oil by the by them too. Did you put any new ones in? Truth is you're inside of your engine is just a huge oil leak the tighter you can keep your tolerances the better you are but not too tight.

Well. Any idea what lack of oil to the divers side could mean?? Oil pressure is still low after new pump and gasket. The drivers side lifters are all noisey as can be but the passenger side is shooting oil out of the pushrods like it should be, just not the drivers. I checked for all the caps in the oil galleys but everything looked fine.

Just did, doesnt tell me about why one side would be oiling and not the other. But, i did stumble upon a link that showed the correct way to install lifters and i pulled to make sure they were pointed towards the intake and about 6 or 8 of them werent. Im really hoping this is the problem because my brain cant deal with this much longer :/ .

o.k. you put a HV HP oil pump in right, the machine shop installed new cam bearings, you checked the galley plug, (see pic),

??? please explain. There is only 2 ways to install lifters and one way is upside down. Lifters spin (rotate in the bores). If they don't it will wipe out cam lobes.

Well, since this is a roller cam the oil holes for the lifters can go face up or face down, i had quite a few of them the wrong direction so i figured that was a possibilty but i just got back inside from putting it all back together and it is the same, no oil to the drivers side and 8 pounds at idle. There obviously has to be something missing here, it looks as if i am one my way back to pulling this thing out once more.....

Ahh. The roller 318 is the engine you are talking about and not the 273. Very confusing.
 
I didnt but is it possible that a faulty oil pump gasket could cause an issue like this?

Chrysler never used an oil pump gasket. Aftermarket kits have one. It is not needed, there are two machined surfaces that mate and seal together. If a gasket was installed it could very well have blown out and caused your problems....

You should get a primer rod 5/16 hex is about a foot long and run the pump with a drill and you can see what the pressure is, HV HP pump should be 70 psi even with a drill.

The only job the gasket has between the pump and main cap is to blow out!
Never use one.

I used a gasket on the last 3 with problems. This could be the exception. I did use a ripped one that i though caused the problem originally but since i put a new pump and unripped gasket im guessing that isnt the problem.

I didnt get to because i ran into an issue when installing the bushing, it was perfect fit around th intermediate shaft but when i install it i didnt but i didnt realize that until halfway down and then i couldnt get back out so i gambled on that being the problem since it was the only obvious fault i could think of. Now, im thinking how can i get the shaft out while its in the car. I tried everything and to try to pry it out of there.

Hang in there Jake. I camt remember if we used a gasket on dads oil pump or not? No issues with mine 45ish at idle.
Im thinking the gasket may be your problem. That bushing is an issue that I would think should be addressed at some point.

The shaft? use a screwdriver in the distributor slot and twist it out. It will walk itself out of the cam gear.

Dude, this thing won't ******* come up for nothing! I've been at it with a screwdriver for 30 minutes and it won't come up even a 16th.
