I've finally found the source of my mystery power drain on the Dart. The light that illuminates behind the in dash ignition switch stays on all the time. Can anyone tell me what should be triggering this to turn off?

Anybody seen this before?

Solution other than eliminating the light altogether?

My 69 Dart never had a illuminated ignition switch. Never heard of that for a 69 Dart as an option either. Not sure what it could be for, but if it was part of the dash light circuit, it should be off when the headlight switch is off. Trace it back and see where it goes and how it's wired in.

I'm talking about this with my 69 tech right now! There are 2 wires at each door jamb switch on cars that have the light package! I believe that either the door jamb switch helps to trigger this feature, or maybe the key in buzzer!! Message member "moparmatt2000", he knows a bunch about this stuff!!

Do your interior/courtesy lights work? My guess would be the door jam switches

69 Darts didn't have key in buzzers. I'm thinking those came along in 1970? when the ignition switch was placed in the steering column.

Time delay relay is likely bad. It Is a thermal device by design. The longer the yellow door switch wires are grounded ( i.e. Door open) the hotter it gets and the longer the key switch is illuminated! It was used into the 2000 plus model years and readily available. Any Mopar with A01 option had them. It looks similar to a flasher but smaller and longer. If you see yellow wire or wires and a pink going to it you found the right piece. Like Cosgig said these cars with the A01 option use dual contact door switch's. The second leg though is used for the headlight on buzzer feature and is likely yellow with black tracer. Look around the ashtray to locate it.

My 69 Barracuda has it and it works just fine after opening and tweaking it a bit! I did not realize just how available they are so I decided to tweak mine into submission. Napa probably even sells them!

This is the part. They will fuse over time especially if the door or doors were held open a long time.

You beat me to it again. And, as always, you are right. It was a timed light that gave you time to see the ignition switch at night. My 69 340 Barracuda has it too. I believe it was part of a interior lighting option.

All good information guys. Thank you very much. Yes, the dome light works perfect with the door. I have Easter "stuff" this morning, but hope to dig into this this afternoon and see if I can figure out what's up. I've owned dozens of mopars, and have never had one with a light behind the dash ignition. You input is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I know on my 68 dart gt my brake pedal was going down just a bit too far causing a dead battery all the time. check that out to see if that is the problem. (scampman)

Im thinking the key switch is in the dash on a 69. Maybe the as tray bulb is hanging down behind the ignition switch? or an under dash floor/courtesy light? Weren't these Mopers known for wiring problems back in the day? I dunno....:(

Hey guys, it's been a while since I've been on FABO. Life got in the way. Anyway, a special thanks to 1969383S. Your advice was spot on. I finally got around to working on the car. The local Weaver parts store had a new time delay relay in stock! I followed your advice to the "T", found the relay right behind the ashtray and replaced it. Shazam!!! Light turns out between 10-15 seconds after the doors close! Dang it feels good when you get a little "challenge" ironed out. Thank you Sir!!!!
