Has anyone used a modern Sirius chrysler antenna on an old Mopar?

While the Barracuda is stripped down and on the rotessory before paint, I've got this great idea and to use a modern satillight radio antenna from say a 2013 Dodge Avemger on the rear of the roof of the barracuda for the new stereo. While the fenders were off being redone we filled the hole for the antenna. The Avenger antenna is a GPS, satilight and radio antenna all in one. But is it only good for the factory radio or is there an adapter so aftermarket satellite gps radios? I don't want to use the magnetic antenna Sirius /xm stuff uses on the new paint. I want a permanent style antenna.

Has anyone actually tried this? I would buy the correct radio but cannot figure out a decent trim panel if I use it in the dash.

Subscription (Sirius) does not operate on AM/FM frequencies. I know nothing about this antenna. I would guess it would not work well on AM/FM

"The short answer" is remember the old 9 ft CB whips? That was a "quarter wavelength" on CB frequency band. That would be one form of "optimized" antenna. Generally, the shorter the antenna and the lower the frequency, the worse things work. Factory AM FM antennas are a compromise at best in the AM band. On FM "they ain't bad". A quarter wave on the FM band (88-108 mhz) is roughly 2 ft long at 108, about 2 1/2 at 88mhz

A REALLY GOOD AM antenna LOL would require a balloon to keep it aloft!! (425 to 137 feet)
 
Seems like modern radios would have more sensitive receivers, the new style might might not be enough on the original. Test hookup prior to install.

I have tried modern AM and FM, difficult for me to find suitable tunes without commercials.

I have all my favorite purchased music on a jump drive, and take it with me.

Here is info on how to add auxiliary audio in to old radio. Adding Auxiliary Input (for an Mp3 Player) to an Old AM Truck Radio: 3 Steps
Mp3 players are inexpensive, or use android phone with headphone jack as player.

My 2013 Challenger only has the Siurius antenna but then again, all I listen to is Sirius. Our 2010 Ram and 2017 Grand Caravan has both the Sirius and regular whip antenna. I'm guessing that when the radio is switched to AM/FM itswitches automatically to the whip? But as primarry driver I don't listen to over the air radio.

My Dart "accidently came" with an aftermarket radio and a USB connector. AWESOME!!! Just load up music on the USB stick and LISTEN!!

I'm thinking about "digging into" at least one of my other radios (Cassette AM/FM) and tapping into low level audio so I can jack in an MP3. I tried the Cassette adapter with "very mixed" results. There is no decent AM/FM around here, FM is very spotty
 
I am wondering if the shark fin antenna's from the newer cars will work and I think they are regular antenna's. I have been meaning to experiment for my other car that is radio delete.
 
Filled the antenna hole in our 69 fastback too.
Thought about an external roof mount modern shark fin or "Barracuda Fin" antenna at the rear of the roof but decided against anything showing on the outside.
Will be going with something like this one from Crutchfield that mounts inside at the top of the windshield.

Use the factory stereo and make sure everything is wired. If u want gps and the suck make sure the GPS is coming from the deck cause it ain't gonna come from the antenna.
Personally I use a stereo with Bluetooth and play pandora on it.
Currently running a Sony 400 watt deck with Bluetooth, cd player, aux in front and back, memory card USB. Not sure about the micros I think it's behind the face. 4 Channel 100 Watts per channel. 2 5.25 kickers cs and 2 6x9 kickers cs up front, and 2 6x9 kicker cs in the back. A 1600 watt planet audio monoblock amp and a 12 inch 2400 watt 2 ohm dual voice coil over rms I think at 1600 from Rockford fosgate. Probably go a pull the 5.25s tho and put tweeters in their place. The deck is temporary as I need to get another DVD player in there cause this is in my van. The deck will go into my dart when I get a DVD player I like. Last one sucked. The 5.25s I'll also put in the dart as having them drops all 4 speakers in the front to a 4 ohm when I want them at 8 to match the rear. I'll also buy another set of 6x9 to put I. The dart as well.
Just checking k your wiring. You may have to do a lil extra work splicing wires but I think you should be ok

I thank you for the information but what I want to do is use a modern radio in the car but dont want the magnetic siriusxm style antenna you get with the kit. I have sirius xm in all 4 of my vehicles and can't stand regular radio (stupid local commercials and repeat the same 10 songs every hour). I got rid of the factory antenna on the fender and like the antenna on our 2013 Dodge Avenger that has satellite, AM/FM and GPS all in the single antenna center rear of the roof. Iit looks like a shark fin antenna but has a 6" whip off of it for am/fm.
I would use the factory double din radio like our 2013 Avenger or my 2012 Ram 3500 has with nav, touch screen and satellite... but because there is no way to make a good looking faceplate to cover the mounting surface and honestly on the 66' Barracuda I'm not sure it can fit because of the heater controls. I will go with a Panasonic or Alpine with built in GPS and handsfree ect. I may just repaint the body of the radio in the same silver I redo the dash in to match so it does not stick out like a sore thumb. I want the new antenna to work with a modern new radio. Also, one antenna (shark fin style like in Avenger) vs multiple antennas for am/fm, satellite and then GPS will look like a$$ on an old car.
Trying to find out if I but the new style antenna from Chrysler- will it work with the aftermarket radios? Chrysler uses a converter box between the antenna and the factory radio.... will I need that as well?

67Dart273 Thanks for the scientific answer and energy I really appreciate it. I completely understand the wavelength information and how FM works. Thank you. I am not trying to get Satellite on a STD antenna. I am trying to find a modern factory (for quality and longevity and bolted down) 3 in one antenna for the Barracuda and use a modern radio (GPS, Sat, AM/FM, bluetooth) in the car and care less about the 66' factory radio- I just want to put the car in drive and go, hence the car is modern fuel injection, disk brakes, etc. The factory radio antenna in most early a-body's were too short for FM radios anyhow for a clear signal. An FM antenna is like 2.75" longer than the am antenna and it is why FM reception is sometimes so bad on these older cars with out a FM booster. Trust me they will work but are not right. My car will look period correct but modernized where it needs to be.

All my moderm Mopars had the whip with the FM wrapped around for the extra 2.75". How about an internal antenna inside the bubble, ie a tape antenna inside the glass? Thats a good question if you find one that works. Im very suprised how good the factory radios are in reception with what little they have for antennas, and I love AM too.

Pishta- a taped type antenna still is on the wrong plane for fm. That's why GM used them in the front windshield in the late 70's but discontinued using them because they really did not work or at least work well. the steel of the roof lines got in the way and blocked the signal.
Plus the modern "shark fin style" on top of a Barracuda... call me silly or sick but i think it will look kind cool.
I'm going to call Chrysler electronics div possibly tomorrow and see if I can get a n answer. I want to stick with Ma MoPar if I can. Even if it is 50 years newer.

I'm attaching pictures of the 2013 Avenger antenna with the am/fm whip like on the wife's car. it does not look as big of plugs but exactly the same style. If i use this on the 66' Barracuda I'm just trying to find out if I need a converter box like the one in my 2012 3500 - trying to find out what it does.
the antenna or 6" whip is part number 5091100-AA and the multi group antenna or shark fin is 5064861-AD
The 6" whip screws into the shark fin and sits off at the matching angle

If you do the MP3 or aux conversion be ready for noise. If you use your cell phone like I did, when ever you get any data flowing through your phone (I.e text or browsing the web) That got annoying as hell. The best way is to use a MP3 player. I tried apple and android phones and got the same results. Static. Hated it. So I went ahead and put a new Sony cd mp3 Bluetooth USB receiver in the car along with a 4channel amp and some Bose speakers I jacked out of a new maxima at the junk yard. Some of the new head units come with everything you need for Sirius xm radio and so forth.

I'm taking a Honda Accord antenna and putting it in my 65 for now. It's electric and goes away unless I use fm/am. But I'm definitely interested in this. Put the fin on the car. That would look pretty damn good to me. Classic look with modern electronics.
 
So the short answer to your question is yes the SMB cable will work on any satellite radio. I am putting in the same antenna on my 65 Valiant. I am converting my Factory AM Radio to AM/FM/AUX IN/BLUETOOTH using the original radio.

The other Awesome thing about the BLUETOOTH in the original radio is I can also stream the audio from the sirius xm app on my phone.

I kept the stock antenna on my 64 Barracuda and have the AM radio converted to AM/FM/AUX IN/BLUETOOTH/USB and just stream that way. Its also nice to stream pandora too.
