I heard some noise coming from the firewall at WOT, did not sound familiar. So when I got home, I opened the hood, gave it a little gas and could hear like a rattling noise sounds like between the block and the trans. A mechanic told me it could be the torque converter is loose, any ideas?

Thanks...

The shield is not on the trans, but I will look into it tomorrow. Thanks.

Had a 2.2 Daytona that I didn't tighten up the torque converter bolts enough. Sounded like a rod knock. Found out when I went to loosen the bolts to pull the engine.

did same thing on a 350 chevy flexplate cracked,..thought i done killed another mouse!

did you say no dust shield between engine and trans? You are kinda inviting disaster. That little dust shield is all you have between sucking up rocks or gawd knows what debris into the bell housing. There is not a lot of clearance in there, if a rock finds its way in there, it may find a way out thru the cast aluminum. It could take out the starter nose, maybe even the converter. It can cause an inordinate amount of grief compared to the time and material it takes to replace that shield.

Yeah, I took a big heavy guy, probably 300 lbs for a ride, floored it and it made a rod knock type sound. Not exactly like a rod knock, but before that nothing. It was somewhat of a knocking sound. Then when I went to investigate under the hood, I brought it up to maybe 2000RPM and it was like a rattle sound. Definitely the torque converter but I gotta investigate more. Thanks. Probably his weight was too much for the flex plate and either cracked it, or the bolts just happened to back off at a bad time.

Thanks...

If I remember correctly there isn't one. It has been a few years since I put her together, and if I remember I didn't have one, didn't have access to this forum to find another one. When I got the trans it didn't come with one. I think it is out of an 86 if I remember correctly. A friend of mine said something might have gotten shot up there, but I typically only drive on the pavement, no off roading, or gravel road driving. Whatever it is, I will look for a dust cover...

Thanks...

BTW, you wouldn't know where I could get a new one do you? Like a brand new one???

Mancini Racing sells new trans dust shields, but there is a small tab near the starter that you have to cut off so the starter installs...

did you ever figure it out?
Yeah, it was the distributor. Never heard one make that kind of noise, I guess the bearings dried up over the past 7 years. It sits a lot, about a week at a time, then if I'm not driving it, I will just warm it up and shut it off.

Do you know how long a stock electronic ignition distributor usually lasts?

Have you been oiling it? That felt piece under the rotor is to lube the advance cam plate just a few drops of oil each time you go in there is fine, that is the biggest issue I see rebuilding them. Also check the shaft bushings if you can actually move the shaft sideways they are done, I have allot of cores if needed or can build one also.

Thanks Halifaxhops for the offer, and the info. Never been told to oil the thing. Yeah it wiggled sideways. Not horribly, but maybe 1/64th to 1/32nd of an inch.

I have a lifetime warranty with O'Reilly's. Already swapped it out, and I don't have another electronic one for backup that I could send you as they want the core, how much would you want for what fits a 1975 360, but I think the actual distributor is out of a late 70's or early 80's Fury. I appreciate your offer to rebuild it and I will look for the felt pad. I can get you more info on the year and stuff of the distributor in my Duster by asking O'Reilly's to reverse check the part number, like see what the part number fits.

Send me the info, year, motor, at or mt I have a book on them. That oil thing I just learned about doing these, I never knew about it and have been doing tuneups since the 70's, I will do a rebuild thread on these one day.

Hey just thinking when it is out check the oil pump shaft bushing, 1 out of 200 distributors have shaft bushing issues so something is doing it.

Don't see the felt pad under the rotor on this one, is it not showing.
