i love music. Always have. So when I got my 65Valiant, the first thing I did after making sure it was good to go for a daily driver was slap some Bose 6x9s in the back deck and a CD player with Bluetooth. Well, that wasn't enough. Went to the junkyard and found a 2000 Audi with the Bose system, and yanked that out. Speakers were perfect, got another set of 6x9s, the 6-1/2s components out of the doors, and found a pair of alpine type s 5-1/4s as well. Also got the factory Bose amp out of the deal all for thirty bucks. Haven't put it all in yet as obviously there are only 3 6x9 holes in the back deck and the dash speaker which I have no clue as to how to mount one there. Where did you put speakers in the front? Cut holes in the doors? Make some neat kick panel molds? Or just not use any? I love clean, loud music. I'm looking for a factory-ish look that's neat, simple, and where I don't have to hack up my car a lot. I'm game for anything but that. Can I see pics of anyone else's that have done door speaker mods?

65 Dart wagon - I want decent sounds but am not a fanatic about it. So the plan is to use a Double Din with Sirius/XM for the radio in a custom console. For speakers a pair of 6X9's in the rear, probably in the side panels. No door or kick panel speakers (at least at this time). The dash gets a pair of 5 inch mid-ranges where the original single speaker was located.

Back in the 90's I had parted out a 71 E Body Convertible (severe rust issues) and saved the pair of dash speaker covers that were used for a 3 speaker stereo dash configuration. I will use them at each end of the dash for stock style tweeters. This setup ought to work OK in the limited early A Body dash and lack of rear parcel tray in the wagon.

I'm gonna put my speakers in the kick panel.
Probably 6.5" and a tweeter and maybe another set of tweets up higher to help bring the sound off the floor. I don't like rear speakers. And a pair 12" in the trunk and gonna power it by a pair of old school punch 150hd.

Old school punch amps were the bomb in the day. Had a punch 50 I think that knocked two twelves pretty good. I was thinking kick panels as well as there is plenty of room there but I just can't seem to get any sound coming up yet. Doors would be a likely thing, but I do have backings for both. The three 6x9s in the trunk sound really good. Too good actually. Can't hear the fronts at all because I have them under the dash. I'll be looking into it today to get one in the middle of the dash. That setup seems pretty good. Wonder if anyone has made custom kick panels

I run an added aux jack to the oem radio, blasting through dry rotted 6x9's. Cypress Hill never sounded better.
If I can hear the radio over the exhaust, ratted weatherstrip, alternator static and gear whine, I'm not going fast enough.

There have been a billion custom kick panels and member on here used to make the adapter to fit real speakers where the factory center-dash unicorn speaker used to live.

Another member is making an adapter to put a pair of small speakers where the single speaker would be. I modded a center speaker bracket so I could add the largest speakers that would fit the space (about 5 inch ones based on the available space). Another member is already making custom kick panel speaker enclosures for the early A - think it might be @66Dvert. They look pretty nifty!

I am another lifelong audiophile. Back in the day, the best system I put together was MB Quart 6-1/2" in the doors, another set of MB Quarts in the rear pillars (this was in my Ram 2500) and a 12" Lanzer sub in a custom made box behind the seat. It was all multi amped for each individual driver with Sony power. It was a fantastic setup. For the Valiant, I went a different direction. I lost all hearing on one side about 10 years ago, so stereo separation is a moot point now. Since my car is being assembled as a sleeper, I wanted the stereo to be subtle. I made a custom mounting plate to put a pair of 4” drivers in the single dash hole for the front channel, added a pair of 6x9’s in the rear, and a single DIN head unit where some moron cut the original dash tabs out from the factory radio. It’s a pretty good setup but it does need some help with the bottom end once I get the suspension/brakes/steering updates wrapped up.

I'm running a 340 6 pac mechanical carbs, 296 .572 cam, 1 7/8" into 3" collectors, with turbotube mufflers. What a sweet sound it is!

I run dual 3 inch all the way to the back, pumping the gas thru dual Dynomaxers. My little 318was running a big TQ, singing the TQ-moan.Head units? Who cares, I got the stereo pipes wailing like banshees, and the TQ moan keeping time to the screaming rubber. I got 460 A/C; 4 windows down and 60 miles an hour, and that hole in the dash looks mighty good with the plate over it.

audiophile (plural audiophiles)
  1. A person with an interest in high fidelity sound reproduction and its associated technology.
  2. high fidelity (uncountable) (abbreviated as hi-fi or HiFi)
    1. The electronic reproduction of a given sound or image with relatively high accuracy.  [quotations ▼]
    2. A high-quality reproduction of sound

Hi-fidelity sound reproduction in an old Mopar? Good luck with that. It's hard enough in a dedicated sound room.

Some headphones can do a pretty good job, tho.

Kenwood USB head unit, 2 vintage 6.5 Infinity poly woofers where the 6x9's go, front and back, with 2 vintage EMIT tweeters in the roof support. Vintage Infinity RS JR crossovers. Only sounds real good when the 273 is not running.

Not sure I would consider myself an "audiophile", but I have a Kenwood Unit mounted underneath my AC ducts (still have the OEM Radio in the OEM location) a 6" Memphis Audio speaker in the dash, and (2) 6" x 9" Memphis Audio speakers out back.

Nothing too crazy, but does the job.

Was talking with a buddy the other day about front speakers.
I brought up the idea that one high quality 6x9 set to mono would probably sound much better than two 3-4 inch speakers side by side

After I get the car back on the road I will be installing an earthquake Bluetooth eq that will feed a rocford fosgate amp and older blaupunkt component speakers in the kick panels and blaupunkt 6x9s hidden in the package tray
I will be using either an ipod or my phone to play the music and the eq will be hidden in the glove box

Most modern music is mixed fairly mono anyways drums bass vocals up the center
Unlike Beatles and Hendrix.

I think a single 6x9 would be better than
Two smaller speakers both would be basically mono except the two 3" can have phase problems.

I'm thinking now. Run a 6.5" up on the dash (I don't like 6x9) run 2 tweets some where high (maybe dash) run 2 6.5" in kick panel.
And wire up the middle dash as a center channel.

I don't run rear speakers except sub cause there uni directional. Music is meant to come in front of you. If you do run speakers in the back for rear passengers. I just run mids no tweets off the rear channel off the deck cause I don't care about them much and only turn them up a bit when people are in the back.

I love that idea, I don't want to hack out my original stereo hole for a deck especially since I never listen to the radio just mp3.

Is this the one your talking about ?

Well. That's not all bad guys. I've already dynomatted the back deck, floor and foot pans. Going to one day do the inside of the doors. A friend sent me a link today and I think I'm going to go with this idea up front. I know recreating a studio quality reproduction in these old cars is hard, but I like the thought of crisp clean music. I hate pulling up to red lights hearing boom boom boom from some little Honda trunk that sounds like it's going to pop open and aluminum cans burst out. I can't stand that. I have to drown that out. Makes me cringe....

So. I have an 8" Bose flat sub and the 6 channel amp that also Bose. And from my riding days, a set of Harley plastic side bags. Believe it or not, it fits perfectly into the right rear of the trunk under the lip. Going to seal it up and cut it up and put the 8 in there. Out of the way, nothing ground shaking. But it'll do the job.
Here's the link for some kick panels... scroll on down and you'll see them. Someone has them already made and I'm very interested in it. Glove box is super nice too!!
Molded Early A glove boxes .(MADE A GOOD one finally)

It's been a LONG time since
I have done an A body sound system. Last time I did the KISS method with Pioneer 6X9's and amp in the rear deck only. It was good enough for the tunes inbetween racing. But that is different than the Magnums set up.

Infinity Kappas 6-1/2's in the front doors lower front section and Infinity 5X7 in the rear deck with a Pioneer 12 inch sub in a ported box.
All 4 speakers are (were) powered at 90 watts rms and the sub at 150 rms. The balancing act is handled by a JVC 3 zone EQ which handles the front speakers with its own sound controls, the rear with a few more sliding levers for its own sound control and a dual control for the sub.

AJ says good luck with that.
I say phooey!!! Just look around until you get what you need for that awesome sound.

Quality components with power handling and power output should be the objective. The rest will fall into place.

Upgrade that alternator!

I've got an Alpine stereo connected to an old iPod in the glove box. An Alpine amp running MB Quart speakers in the kick panel and the package tray along with a 10" JL Audio sub. I'm also running two 3 1/2" speakers in the dash powered off of the head unit. Hush mat under the carpet, door panels and headliner. Doesn't sound too bad but not competition worthy.

The biggest improvement I made was getting rid of the drone from the Flowmasters.

My plan is an Alpine ILX107 in the dash, which is a double din touchscreen, with a motorized panel that comes out of the dash to cover it. A small in dash speaker up front, a component set in the kick panels, something small in the rear deck, I'm thinking 6.5's. Then a single 12" sub and amp in the trunk. I'll probably go with all Digital designs speakers and amp because it's Made in USA. Dynomat or an equivalent everywhere.

If you're wondering about the dash, it's going to be all 3D printed, which is why I'm able to do a cover panel

Yeah, I was wondering about 3D printing. Wish I had one of those things lol. Those kick panels would make a nice setup. My rear deck is perfect. 3 6x9s run off the radio is doing it just fine. I hooked the Bose amp up to two 6x9s I have tucked under the dash for now until I can afford the kick panels or I get some resin and fab my own. Hooked up the 10 in flat Bose sub to the sub out on that Bose amp. Enough bump for me. Just trying to save up and not hack the car in the process. It's loud enough for me.

Just need more in the front but reckon when I get the 6x9s out from under the dash it'll liven up the front so that the rear isn't as overpowering. Trying to bring out more from the front. Back is perfect. I do have those alpine type S's I got from the junk yard for ten bucks. Score on my part lol. They should do better than the 6x9s in the front.
