Anyone ever tried this stuff? I can get a decent deal on a case through work but never ran a 5w50 before. Currently running Mobil1 15w50 in my truck. Mild 360 doing a lot of towing and off roading. Like the 50weight after the engine temp gets up there, but thinking that 5w50 might be a good oil when she weather cools off. Looking at their website, it's a full synthetic, with high zinc level for flat tappet cams. Anyone have any thoughts or used Schaefer oil?

I've used their oil for over 20 years.
Seen first-hand lab testing of bearing wear microns per blah blah. Its good stuff.

Mobile1 used to come in 5W50, and I ran it in My ShelbyZ year 'round, now it's 15W50.........but the car never see's the road in the winter months now...I'd use it........

Where you live I think I would use a decent normal oil of about 10/30 -10/40 range if it were my truck and an LA motor.
5.9 I use full synthetic 5/30 because those motors are made for synthetic and it isn't all about pressures.
A truck with generally low speeds and higher temps can benefit from a fast running oil that helps carry off heat and the synthetics do that.

Interesting on the Schaefer oil; thanks for the info. (I hope it is better than their beer LOL)

I cannot see the actual zinc levels from their data sheets; have you found that info, OP? I can just find a general statement on 'extra zinc anti-wear additives....'.

We've got a Schaefer rep that comes into work. I've got her checking on the specific zddp levels. I'll let you know as soon as I hear from her. She just sells the stuff. You know the game, hire a beautiful woman to go around selling your oil and grease products.

I go to church with a Schaefer sales rep and he showed me some pretty convincing info on how well it works and tried to come up with a number for the ZDDP level a couple yrs ago but couldn't. Seems to be a secret. Dartish let us know what your rep finds out

Hoping to hear back from her Monday or Tuesday. I'll post whatever she comes back with

if she`s beautiful, post a pic of her ! Back to the oil. When we ran the hemi for 14 yrs., we used who ever would furnish oil for us, didn`t seem to make a tinkers dam what brand, always ran 40 or 50 weight, course the hemi`s were set up loose back then.

I'm not an oil expert but wouldn't 45 points of viscosity index improvers (VI) lead to a shorter service life?

Yes, for straight petroleum oils; they tend to cause rings to gun, etc.

Buuuuut... Synthetics naturally have a wide temp range over which the viscosity is quite stable. They need little (maybe no) VI's to achieve those wide viscosity ranges; it is just in their nature.

Schaefer rep said the 5w50 has 2200ppm zddp per quart

A case of 12qts ended up costing $79. Didn't think that was too bad if it's as good as they claim it is. Sounds like it has a pretty good additive package

On their website it has a place to submit a question and I asked about the zddp package and this was their response

A: [Great question! Zinc 1600-2000 ppm phosphorus 1300-1900 ppm]

It's great oil. Ran it on the derby track for years. Extreme heat,no water, it would never break down and lose its consistency after a long hard run on the track. Some cheap oils would look like cooked grease that you fried in the frying pan.

Don't forget...too much zinc is a power killer. High zinc oils are ok if you're not looking for power. Zinc is a power eater. IMHO, anything over ~1600 is overkill.

The big thing is to get you oil tested often enough to see how fast you use the additive package. When it's gone, it's time to change the oil. Mileage is a variable. Some engines use more additive quicker. An example would be a SFT with rockers that are not roller in the shafts. You have a bunch of area where the zinc gets used up.

A roller crammed engine, with rollers on the rocker shaft need less zinc and use it slower.

Mild, hydraulic flat tappet 360 in a truck that sees ALOT of mud and snow. Sustained load and rpm while toying around get it warm now and then. More interested in longevity then every last horsepower. I've liked the 50 weight and this stuff sounds like a decent oil and flows quicker then the dino oil when it gets cold in the mornings

Then you are a good candidate for a very high zinc oil. Test a sample new and then test again every 5000 miles or so and see how fast you are using the additive package. Then you'll have your drain interval.

They said I can send in several samples for free since I just switched all our loaders and equipment over to Schaefer. I doubt I'd ever see 5000 miles on it anyway. I'm one of those guys usually changing it every 2000 or so, just because I like to beat the snot out of it on a regular basis. All my hunting and fishing spots are pretty hard to get to, and there's always someone around that needs their Z71 or Super Duty pulled out of somewhere by my rusty old dodge
