408 Stroker Short Block Details: Blueprint Engines

-
Happy with the motor, ball honed the cylinders and new bearing/rings/pistons. Hopefully get another 700 runs out of it.

Something I learned somewhere years ago, though I recall the petcocks seizing up after some time. This time I used antiseize on the threads so hopefully whenever the time comes to drain the block they actually work!

Well, I pondered the idea over and over. Today, I went ahead, jacked the motor up, removed the motor mount, removed the drain and put it back in.

When you think about it, how many times does anyone need to drain the block? It's handy when flushing things out good, a mess either way.

I never thought of putting a radiator drain plug on the block. Great idea. I am dreading removing the motor mount on the pass. side to get at the drain

Yep, that's an old trick. Did that with my old 340 build back in the early '70s. Sure makes it easy to drain the block if you need to pull the engine. Cuts down the big mess when you have to drain the block with the engine out.

As delivered the motor ran 12.99 in a 3645lbs car. With tuning and learning to drive muffler/gear change it got down to 12.47 with no changes to motor After changing back to stock intake manifold and ported x heads eddy 800 cfm thunder and different cam it ran 12.10 113mph right before I tore it down.

Can you recall what the cam spec's are? Didn't they use a milder cam on the earlier versions vs. what they use now?

That's pretty good numbers.....113 MPH at 3600 lbs... sounds like it makes as much power as one of those "530" HP "mrl performance " engines

I think the early versions 2008ish made a touch more power. I can check the original cam when I get home. Looking at them now, mine came with BG, 825 cfm mighty demon, h beam scat rods, and forged ICON pistons. Now it has hyper pistons, i beam rods and holly 750. My Dyno sheet says it made 467hp and 510ft lbs. which seemed about right. They ran it with headers while i run stock 340 exh manifolds. The engine had definitely been run before I got it. The one thing that bugged me was I like the kevco oil pan that was on it, but the dip stick missed the oil in the baffle and the crank snapped it off. The pan has a plug to determine when its full so no biggie to me. Also the drainfor the pan is outside the sump area so it leaves about 1/2 a quart of oil in it when doing and oil change. I just welded in another drain in the sump area.

The mph in original form IIRC was 109. The 113 is with a much better cast iron X head by Porter Racing heads and different cam. After the compression bump it should run 11.80's, if the ham fisted monkey behind the wheel can get his act together!

A couple of other issues I just remembered. If you use stock 340 exh manifolds they usually hit the eddy heads on the drivers side. I just installed a header flange as a spacer to make it fit. Also the alt can be a pain because of the shape of the head. A longer belt fixed that. Just realized mine also came with fuel pump. Water pump, dampener.

Mid summer and short block is now a long block, just lacking distributor and miscellaneous peripherals. Will be taking a break and then on to going through trans setup, custom converter etc. So this is it: Blueprint 408 (410 actual) shortblock, KB 416 .040" over hyper, approx. 9.8:1 w/ Enginequest LA style intake bolt pattern mildly ported Magnum heads, 1.92/1.62 nitide coated valves, Hughes 1110 springs and retainers, Comp Cams: 1.6 alum. roller rockers, guide plates, studs, and 7.50" pushrods (giving excellent roller tip pattern on valve tips) single pattern Isky 280 Mega hyd flat on 106° LSA (280°adv/232°@.050"/.517"valve lift/68° overlap/102 intake CL) Summit billet timing set, ported Weiand Action Plus dual plane, Demon Street Demon 750, Doug's D453 ceramic coated 1-5/8" headers, Melling oil pump, MP windage tray, Milodon 30940 pan, Gates 43026P 8 blade w/plate water pump, and Pro Sport sfi balancer. FSR aluminum radiator, A727, with as yet determined size/stall custom Ultimate Converter, with a 3.73 sure-grip 8-3/4 with 27" rears with a total weight at about 3350lbs. Haven't added up total cost so far, probably best not to!

Must be the camera angle or camera used? I gasket matched and tapered down into the runners about two inches or so, radiusing the roof of the runners for a nice curve eliminating the pronounced angle change as they originally tapered to the 318 small port opening. And rounded all corners from the plenum into the runners, removed lumps etc. Spent a lot of time on it.

So is this thing burning tires yet??
Not yet, engine in, waiting on torque converter and flexplate to arrive, just finished putting the trans together, that'll all go in asap, then doing the exhaust, wiring, throttle, etc.

Do you have to wiggle the engine and cherry picker through the door? Or lower the body onto the k frame? wow that's tight in there!

That blueprint engine is gonna kick some butt....
I loved my Stroker I put in my Vette.....tire burnin' ****!
I can't wait to hear your results!
