I currently have a build 904 in my dart. The trans has a broken band (i think) and I need to pull it out to get it fixed. I also have a 727 in my basement. Is it even worth trying to fix the 904 or should I just build the 727? I would also like to NOT have a manual valve body. I like to just put it in drive and go but open to suggestions. The car has a procharged small block that makes 550hp. Thoughts?

So long as it can handle the Hp the 904 is ideal.

Turbo action makes a pro street auto valve body

If you change from 904 to 727, you'll have to get a shorter driveshaft with a different slip yoke and a different converter and possibly flexplate. 727 is naturally stronger than a 904, but a 904 can handle a lot of HP with basic HD/performance upgrades and will be about .15 faster in the 1/4 mile. 904s also don't have a tendency of blowing up if the sprag goes out.

The 727 should get upgraded also. A good shift kit or standard forward performance valve body will go a long way to minimize heat, slippage and prolong its life. A cooler is a good idea for any performance application.

I would definitely like to stick with my 904 I just dont know whats is wrong with it now and i want to make sure it can handle the power. I guess I need to find a good trams guy around Chicago to bring it to.

Honestly, if you need a new trans, I'd be looking at this as an opportunity to put some type of OD in your car. Trust me when I tell you once you have an OD it's life changing and you'll never go back .

If you are going to keep your existing transmission, a gear vendors overdrive. That's what I run. If you are going to put a new tranny in there

If you wanted a new OD transmission I'm not familiar with all the options or what's best but I've read about using a518 or a500 transmissions.

FWIW I will be using a mildly beefed up A500 behind a stock 340 in my 47 Dodge project.

904 all the way. Just finished mine last month. I'm running this behind a 408 6 Pack motor.

First things first: How do you know it's broken?

904 all the way. Screw that 727 boat anchor.

Have the 904 built. Can easily be built to handle your hp. No need for a manual valve body either.

As far as od goes. gear vendors is probably the easiest way to do it. Not all that cheap and not the best od ratio but a very strong piece that you don’t have to hack your car to put in.

That a500, 518 and gm200r od units all require you to hack the torsion bar crossmember up. If that’s not a big deal to ya then that me be the way to go for you

After doing a small burnout the trans has had issues. If I put the car in Drive it will just rev and the car will rock about 1/2". I have to put the trans in 1st and manually shift the car to drive it. It also wont take a lot of power. If i give anymore than 1/4 throttle it will not go. It feels like it is slipping or driving through the converter. The fluid looks brand new too.

Hey Sublime,

May want to give this place a call. While I only had them press in some bushings/seals for my 727, the manager Chuck and several of the technicians are old school Mopar guys. Seem like real decent folks, and I'll go there if/when I need trans/rear end work. That said, I suggest you chat with them to see if they may be right for you.

And I love your ride!

Hey, thanks! I will definitely give them a call! I am going to make a post to see if anyone else have recommendations for a trans guy around me too.
