UDHarold was a genius on cam design...RIP. Always interesting to read even though lots of that discussion is way above my pay grade.

Kinda makes me wonder why anyone would use a shelf cam in a performance application.

Harold was not just on the forfront of cam design and technology, he was the spear tip at the formost point of the tip.

Above my pay grade is a great saying and well applied here as well.

While I understand about 90% of what I read, something’s I have never read before twisted me up, it is a shame that he past. RIP Harold!

I’ll tell you why most people use a “Off the shelf cam.” It is pressing the “EZ button!” There is nothing wrong with that as long as the cam choice is a reasonable one. However, for many people, once you start talking cams, there eyes go grey along with the brain! Cam science is called the “Black Art” for a reason. And most people want a good cam for there ride. The “best” isn’t on the table for street and mild strip guys. If your racing for the money and don’t really get cam tech understanding as explained by Harold at the simplest level he can deliver it at... that leaves people uneasy even though the people grinding your cam are trying there best for you.

People become unsure of the cam choice made by someone hundreds of miles away. There head is saying, “How do I know this is the best cam, does he really have my best interest in mind, does he really care, how did he come to this design for me, how do I know it works, etc....

People also like to have control in what there choosing. A bit of pride in saying “I did it!”

If anyone read or already knew, Harold designed the Voo-Doo line of cams who ch for the time, was and probably still is Harold’s best design for street - street strip cams. So with that in mind, getting a off the shelf cam designed from Harold isn’t IMO, a bad choice.

Recently (from a FABO member) I just picked up a cam designed by Harold during the Ultra Dyne” period for use in a drag car project. Old cam? Yes. Outdated? Possibly. Still able to make killer power, run fast? I’m sure of it. Is it custom for me personally? Negative!

(I’d have to get the cam card again, but, IIRC, It’s the NF63/NF64 lobes.)
