360 LA turbo exhaust question

Morning,


I'm currently putting a turbo on my 360 LA that is in my 88 Jeep Wrangler. The engine always had block huggers that I hated! They cause high under hood temps while out in the sand and on the trails. Plus, they always leak and crack.


So, I would like to keep it simple and run stock exhaust manifolds. The stock truck manifolds with the center dumps look like they would work great. I know they are small at the collector area....my questions is, could I cut the donut seal off and bore out the center a bit??


I cannot run magnum style manifolds flipped due to the power steering pump and engine mounts. I cannot run them normal as the pas. side would hit the firewall.

I have thought about building log style manifolds....but I'm not trying to get real crazy and spend time where it is not needed. I plan to only run 4 psi as this engine is not built for boost. I'll build another engine on the side and swap it over in time.

anyone have ideas???? I'd gladly give up power for cooler underhood temps

hey Kirk, you might get a better answer about half a page down, we got a whole section dedicated to forced induction...and i think a thread with only turbo headers

I have a set of manifolds off a 78 powerwagon if that would help.

I will move to turbo for now and merge both if needed later.
 
The easiest and cheapest solution would be to try and make a rear mounted turbo setup work. This will lower your temps and still produce 4 psi.

If your headers are still in good shape and are of quality, wrap them up!

If you want oem manifolds, that’s fine too, you can wrap those up. Going with rear exits would be better for a rear mount. Don’t bother cutting them out, the turbo is going to do all the induction work instead of a scavenging style exhaust design. What works here is exhaust gas velocity and smaller pipe size is ok.

Tie in both exhaust banks like normally, and choose to mount the turbo maybe on the other side of the T-case drop, so it’s still somewhat protected.
 
A rear mounted turbo system would not work. My jeep gets used and abused in mud, rock, sand and water crossings.

The headers I have are block huggers by Summitracing. They just bake the underhood stuff. I can't even touch the hood or brake booster.

I think i'll just order a set of these: Dorman Exhaust Manifolds 674-233 and call it good.

Yeah the water crossing would be a tough venture. If you could tuck a turbo up in there somewhere, and put the air intake up high, I doubt you’d have many problems. Your turbo is going to be rather small anyways to make just 4 psi, probably a T3 housing. And you could always add some armor to it.

You know best. I’m sure you know that more exhaust under the hood is going to create mass amounts of heat. Header wrap is your friend. But will rust the **** out of your pipes, especially if you’re crossing water often - getting it wet. So, either use 304SS for the pipes or use thicker wall schedule 40 pipe.

I just decided on stock manifolds. I have a t4 flange turbo. It will be low boost till I can build another engine for more boost...or till this one blows up HAHA! I spend a lot of time in the throttle while offroading.
 
Just take a drivers side shorty header, cut the collector off and build a log. Then run the divers side normally and have it merge back up into the log of the pass side.

Yes, exactly. Just showing options and outside the box thinking from just buying stuff.
I tried to copy the LS designed turbo manifold that my friends all have. The one I made was only the cost of the pipe and a lunch for my cousin to weld it up. I already had the Dakota/Ram headers.

I greatly appreciate everyone's help. Here is what I put together:

The factory manifolds fit PERFECTLY! I cut out some exhaust flanges that mate to the manifolds.

There is no room for an intercooler.....so I installed a meth injection system. I do not look to use it for more power, just to keep the intake air temp down. In the past, I'd reach 160 * plus while out in the sand hammering on it.

for the now, I used 2.5" exhaust tubing for the intake. I am not a great tig welder yet, so do not feel like spending time to learn on the intake. I'll re make it later.

I had to run a remote oil filter housing...not a fan...but I could not get the up pipe to fit nice with the filter in the way. I made that small section removable to so I can get to the fittings for the turbo oil drain and the remote oil filter. I had some v band clamps laying around for this.

The exhaust dumps rite out of the pass. side fender. If it is to loud, I will route it further back.

This is pretty interesting, but the OP mentioned concern about heat under the hood. "I don't think" LMAO that a turbo install is going to help that!! ---whether manifolds or headers
 
Thanks dusted. I spent a long time figuring how I wanted to do the merge. I am very happy with how it turned out.

67dart, it will not be as hot. I can guarantee that. The turbo will most likely get a blanket. Those block huggers headers were a huge heat source. In time I will see if I can plumb in a intercooler of sorts. Running out of real estate at the moment :(

Just need to wire up the computer, plumb the fuel lines and should be good to fire up.

Are you running stock computer or megasquirt? Also what size injectors? Sorry if this was covered in another thread.
A Turbo blanket will do wonders for radiant heat from the Turbo.

I am running a megasquirt ms2 with 3.0 board. Just fuel control for now. Bought the Edelbrock Efi intake with their rails. Runs amazing and I run a wide and O2.

Injectors are I believe 24 lbs. from 07 era f150 with the 5.4. I know this will need to be changed.

Made a dash for the Jeep that houses a 7” touch screen with a raspberry pi3 computer. It allows me to tune and look at various engine stuff. It will also serve as a gps speedo and tach.

I’m gonna be running megasquirt also on my 91 with the 360 magnum this winter. I will be in touch for your help with the knowledge and tune!! Haha. Keep up the great work.
 
Thanks! I just have collected tools that allow me to do things. Plasma cutters really help! I also just recently bought a 4’x4’ cnc plasma table. Really makes fabrication easy!!! I just spend waaaaay to much time in the garage lol.
