Anyone know of a source for at least OEM quality vinyl top material for a '65-'66 Dart GT?
My recollection, and it's been a loooong time is that the original vinyl material had a diamond grain. Someone with an original vinyl top please correct or confirm my recollection.

I have a 66 gt with its original vinyl roof, I will take a pic tomorrow and post it.

Sorry
Didn’t get a chance to take pic today,
will do tomorrow

I think the only place that might have the original material is SMS in Oregon. There was a shop in Michigan that NOS material but SMS bought their supply.

Another option is painting the roof. I painted my 1965 Dart GT top white, between the chrome strips. Vinyl degrades fast in the CA sun and then lets water sit to rust thru the roof.

I like the vinyl roof and since the car will live most of its life garaged, rust or sun damage (strong here in Georgia also) shouldn't be a problem in my lifetime.

Hi received vinyl top sample from SMS which they say is correct for 65 Dart. Does not look anything like the PIC posted. It is not a Boar grain, it shows like little dashes like bricks in a herringbone pattern. Before I purchase, I would like to know what is correct as I do not remember either and mine was removed before I purchased. Please some one HELP
Thanks Dave

The pic posted above is not boar grain, that is Levant, which is not the correct grain for a 65 Dart. I believe the sample sent from SMS would be pinpoint, and I would tend to believe them. Let’s see the sample grain please.

Pic is from an original paint 60k mile car.
I’m the second owner. It was an old mans car that died of cancer. Family donated car to American cancer society and it was the sold at auction. Somehow or another that roof came new on this particular 66 GT that is 100% original except for a few dents and some rust.

Like my 65 barracuda. Top is gone, but chrome may all still be there. Was reading up on vinyl roofs, lots of untruths, like it was glued to bare metal. Mine had paint under it.

Hi I will try to insert Pic of Vinyl Top Material from SMS sample that I received;; my first time for insert for this site. Thanks Dave

Hi recently purchased complete interior from Legendary and I was told that they did not have;; I'l check again. I like there products and when I order complete they treat me good. I have several Mopars that are dear to me and I use Legendary only for these... Replacing my first three Mopars from my youth. I first had 65 Dart GT then 67 Dart GTS BB 4 speed and 70 Challenger RTSE

Check out post #18

Hi thanks; according to there web site they have it and I had the candy cane moldings in my cart already;;;; I will call Mon. to place the order.
Thanks Dave nice to have this problem resolved. The 65 Dart GT was my first; my father picked it out for me when I was 16 in 65 and I had to work to pay for it. He wouldn't let me have what I wanted. I had so much fun in this car. Good ole Mopars, I beat this thing to death. I could beat a 283 Chevy in 1/4 mile

I just re-read your post. Herringbone patterns were used on the trunk mats. It is possible you got a sample of that.

I bought the SMS product and it looks the same as the original pieces under the stainless trim I removed.

I know he's a sponsor of this forum, but I've never bought anything from Layson's that was of good quality or a good value. The black vinyl top material that was enough to cover my '65 Dart Charger cost $98.00 + shipping.

My 65 GT has the original vinyl top. [I've owned this car since 1969]. I can give you a pix by tomorrow if interested. It is in good shape, the car rarely sits outside...except when at the Drag strip.

Very clean pix of 65.JPG
