Hamburger adjustable timing set that uses a silent chain! Man that is High Performance....

Here's the double roller version. It reads; "TRIK RACE CAR PRODUCTS" , "PAT. APPL. FOR"

I ran one of those years ago. When it broke it wasn't nice to the rest of the engine :-(

Good idea in theory especially if you have one on the dyno. Unless he designed a easy access timing cover, you still have to open up the front of the engine.

OK, next follow up question on the used timing chain search: What are some real world issues with a worn chain using a tensioner? Like an 200,000 mile V6 Dakota that uses the MP tensioner and a crap chain? Whats the cam timing going to do with a degree or 2 of retarding?

I have 2 1996 3.9's both with timing chain/ tensioner rattle. They both sound like they will fly apart. They need new components just like your engine does.

Mopar small blocks are interference motors. It's never nice when a chain breaks.

double roller in a 3.9 and no tensioner? Im looking for a tensioner equipped silent chain stocker story. Im sure the tensioner is gonna be maxed out.

Well...uuum..it's going to be a degree or 2 retarded......
It's gonna be a bit more sluggish and throttle response will be a bit less. 3-4 degrees retard will REALLY show up as sluggish.

Hamburger was ahead of his time. the adjustable cam timing would be cool on the dyno. then when u find the best cam position for the combo-install a cloyes true roller and offset cam bushing to dial in the cam position, cuz the way I beat on stuff I would break that adjustable unit too

who the hell would use a junk chain and a tensioner? use a good chain set and no stupid tensioner . tensioners are for motorcycles-where sprocket to sprocket length varies due to suspension movement

any small blocks use nylon gears
if so post up the years
those withover 100k are well advised to put on a new chain even with a cast iron gear
as someone posted, a broken chain is not kind to your motor and a loose chain has the spark jumping all over the place

From past discussions on here I remember many saying that basically any timing chain set you buy short of the top-dollar stuff WILL stretch after some time, almost inevitably... in that case I like tensioners simply because it keeps the timing (valve and ignition) from bouncing around. But it's one of those things that apparently wasn't a big deal to Ma Mopar as there was no real rhyme or reason to which engines got tensioners and which didn't; I just tore down a JY 5.9L Magnum out of a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 and it had no tensioner. All the G3 Hemis have timing chain tensioners, but then those have larger cam-to-crank centerlines... idk lol

EDIT: IIRC the 3.9 V-6 engines stretch timing chains worse than the V-8s because they have a very uneven firing interval

my sister in law''s 73 or 74 Satellite w/318 had a nylon coated cam gear. At near 200k, I tore it down because I saw the rotor spinning in kind of a jerking manner. This is no exaggeration, there was only one real tooth still on the cam gear. All the rest of the teeth had lost their nylon coating, and were worn down till they were really just aluminum bumps. It still ran, not well, but it still ran.

who the hell would use a junk chain and a tensioner?
Who the hell would use a free tbi efi and a $50 draw through turbo on a junkyard 273? Me! Plenty of auto motors use tensioners...look at any Chain driven OHC motor.

I bet it's nowhere near that stretched
To remove a link. Iirc the cogs wear to exaggerate the small amount of chain stretch.
