I'm hoping a few of you guys on here are some push button transmission gurus, because I have a few questions about and upcoming build.

I've got a long tail shaft cable shift 904 out of a 65 273 Belvedere, and a short tail shaft push button shift 904 out of a 64 Dart.

I am planning to, assuming it's possible, take the first two gears out of the slant 6 transmission and put them into the V8 transmission. I am also planning to convert the V8 transmission to short shaft using the Slant six output shaft and tail housing. I am also wanting to keep the push button shift, do I need to use the 1964 valve body? What other problems am I missing?

The whole point of this is because I am taking the slant 6 out and putting a V8 in.

I've never heard of a long tailshaft 904. As far as I know, they're all 31" OAL. 727s, however, are 35" overall. '65 Belvedere? I'll bet you've got a 727, that's what mine came with.

Wow, not quite what I was expecting. I was actually hoping for a 9:04 because they draw a little less power. But at least a 727 would be a little more bulletproof right? I'll take a picture of the numbers tomorrow after work and post them up.

One easy way to tell them apart is the shape of the pans. 727s have a bump-out on th RF corner.

So I'm pretty sure just going off of the pan, that it is a 904. But it still got that crazy long tail shaft. Came back with some pics for you this time. The one sitting on the plastic is the long shaft, the clean one is the slant 6 Short shaft. Just going by the oil pan it looks like a 904...

  • You're right, that's a 904. Learned something new today, thanks, wish I could do that more often. I'm not the guy to give you 904 advice (I've only rebuilt one), but I've done pretty much what you're talking about with 727s several times. The valve bodies are a little different (the '65 has room inside for one more shift of the manual valve), but I believe you can use a '65 in a pushbutton application, just not the other way around.

Turns out, from what I been reading, I need to transfer all the guts from the 64 slant 904 into the 65 sb 904, including the tailshaft and housing. Should be pretty straightforward..? Would be my first time inside a transmission..

There are some really good books on rebuilding torqueflites, one by Carl Munroe, one by Tom Hand, and the ATSG rebuild manual. I've got them all, they'll basically tell you everything you need to know. Other than a few special tools (which you can sometimes be creative and get by without), they're pretty straightforward and parts are readily available.
