64 Barracuda 273 2 barrel stock throttle linkage to 904 push button trans. While driving in 3rd steady rpm, the trans disengages engine revs up and will re-engage again. then repeats it again -- Is this a trans issue - rebuild time or linkage issue -- ff linkage what is fix ???

Checked in neutral, transmission hot?

Correct brought it up to normal temp drove around block and it again dis engaged check fluid in neutral when I got home and was on the mark has me puzzled

Stock filter setup, or an extension with a bigger pan?
What was in the pan when the fluid was changed?
Was a new filter put in when the fluid was changed?

Ive had that same issue and I wasnt low, my filter was stuffed! But lack of fluid is the same cause. Have pump pressure checked. Should not be much at a trans shop.

I have a similar thing with my Brother-in-laws 72 Duster. The shifter is in drive but the car will sometimes just act as if I popped it into neutral. manually shifting it seems to engage it again. Maybe my linkage needs a slight adjustment.

Look at and smell the fluid. If it looks brown and not red and smells burned, you probably have a direct clutch issue. It's worth doing a transmission service on it to check the pan for debris. If the fluid is burned and you have debris in the pan, it's time for a rebuild.

Thanks for all reply’s stock trans pan and new filter 2 months ago pan had black grains not as coarse as sand I did not cut old filter open should of when I get home tonight I’ll take it out and then check fluid color and smell

Any issues in reverse? Might be a broken sealing ring on the reaction shaft support which seals the circuit to the front clutch.

Sounds all like a linkage problem. Any way you could safely disconnect it from the transmission and go for ride?

Is it possible the trans is just kicking down prematurely and what you’re feeling is a downshift from 3-2? Has the kickdown linkage been inspected and adjusted correctly?
