Anybody have any experience to share thinking about going with a holley sniper efi on a 400/452

I'm putting one on my 383. I bought the Holley (tanks) fuel tank and pump setup.

I put an FI tech on a stockish 440 last year and it works well but the Holley has better tuning options IMO. The FI tech does work well but the external pump is noisy. We also used the timing control which is pretty slick. I'd recommend using the timing control.

I'm probably a good month or more from having mine running.

Well I'm interested to hear your results as I am much more than a month away from anything with mine. Just collecting knowledge and opinions for now.

Don`t know anything about the sniper, but what I`ve read on here. I`ve got a diff brand f.inj. system on a 505" stroker , and like it so far ! Kick as /being able to tune and retune from the drivers seat !!
 
Holley Terminator on my 472, works extremely well. Also used it to break in my 383, now I’m tuning it, ever so slowly cause it’s dependent on my buddy when he has time (SC US Navy).
 
They are an awesome system. just remember the proper ignition components when you pull the trigger. happy to help if you're interested in giving us a try.

also remember they have an approx 900 cfm rating, so if you need more carb than that, you'll want to look at their other offerings.

I run it on a sb 408 stroker and am very happy with it. Tried an external pump and was never happy with it. Ended up going with the Tanks Inc set up for it (I believe the Holley tank is the same but more $$) The Sniper unit is easy to set up and works great. Hit the key and go. I'm not controlling the timing with it and use a gm style hei coil with with it.

I'm putting a Super Sniper on the low deck 512 in my '65 Coronet. Should have it running in a week or so. Just need to finish up some minor fab work and run some wires.

Interested in your results Andy. I am assuming from the stock exhaust manifolds that the 512 is a streetable build? I have a 500 low deck with a hydraulic roller cam and Edelbrock heads.
 
Yes it is a street car. Pump gas 512 with hyd roller and HP manifolds. Makes about 575 hp on the dyno. Has ported Mopar 452 aluminum heads. Car is 3800 lbs with a 5 speed Doug Nash transmission. I have a Aeromotive pump in the tank with a return line. I just need to sort out some minor stuff and then I'll have the Super Sniper up and running.

Looks great. What size sniper are you using, im doing the same thing on a low deck but im months out before running

Sounds quite similar, mine made 550 HP and 610 TQ on the dyno with ported 452 iron heads. When I switched to the Edelbrocks I picked up some ET and MPH so it is probably around the 575 mark now. This will be a good comparison for me.
 
Super Sniper has a few more features. I went with it since I wanted to track oil pressure, fuel pressure, oil temp, etc. on the screen. The Super Sniper has extra IO so you can add more gauges. I used kit 550-518. I think the Super Sniper is just a few bucks more than the regular Sniper.

Thanks Andy. I had no idea about this upgrade. I have zero interest in adding additional gauges in the car beyond the controller. It just sealed the deal for me.....

Yeah I decided to eliminate my gauge panel and use a digital dash in my car so I needed the Super Sniper. With the Super Sniper you can display oil pressure and fuel pressure and other gauges on the digital dash. With the regular Sniper you don't have anyway to pass the data to the dash. If you want even more IO you have to upgrade to the Terminator. The Terminator allows you to hook up a lot of sending units and to see them all on the digital dash. Then you can get rid of the entire dashboard in the car. That is what I'm doing with my Duster. It won't have a dashboard at all. I removed the instrument panel and replaced it with a digital screen.
 
Sorry but what is “IO”?

Input/Output. The base Sniper is very limited in what it can control. Basically it can turn on the fuel pump and the fans and adjust the idle speed for the AC kicking on and some stuff like that. You can't display fuel pressure or oil pressure on the screen since there aren't any 5 volt inputs. The Super Sniper adds some 5 volt inputs so now you hook up sensors and have the data displayed on the screen. If you step up to the HP or Dominator systems you get a huge amount of IO. The Dominator system can control an automatic transmission and do drive by wire. It can also control multiple stages of nitrous and different types of boost and all kinds of other stuff.
 
I've found the best way to learn about the various EFI systems is to go to the Holley website and read the instructions for the kit. The instructions are all available and they usually have wiring diagrams that which show you what the real capabilities of the kits are.

Are you suggesting we actually read the instructions? Dear me, I thought the best information was always on these forums. Crap, I gotta come up with a whole new plan now!

I haven't tried the EFI stuff yet. But I can tune a carb and ignition...lol. The Chevelle will be my first install, as I'm flipping it and that's what the masses want now.

I spent a few days last week on the dyno with a 470 low deck engine. We baselined it with a Dominator carb then switched over to the Sniper. Made 710 hp with the Sniper. That is about the limit for the Sniper. The engine was sucking pretty hard on that little throttle body! The manifold pressure was down about 10 kpa from atmosphere so that is a big pressure drop. A bigger throttle body would be worth 20 or 30 hp on this engine. But it worked. Started right up, ran nice and smooth, pulled hard up past 7000 rpm. I think the Sniper setup is a no brainer. It doesn't cost much more than a good race carb but it works a lot better. Plus you get full data logging and a bunch of dash info.



 
Here is what the data log screen looks like for a dyno pull. This is very interesting stuff for dyno geeks since most dyno software doesn't provide anything like this. The Sniper data logging software allows you to replay the pull and see what everything was doing. On this screen you can see the RPM go up, the throttle position, the air fuel ratio during the pull, the manifold pressure during the pull, etc.
