That's what some dumbass schooled me on at the last car show I went to. :D

He says they were the most gutless unreliable POS ever made.

I didn't contest his opinion, because what would be the point?

Any motor can be made to run.
Stock the 340 ran very well !!!
I would have laughed that guy away from me !!
 
The Chrysler HP engines were some of THE most reliable. They didn't use large by huge camshafts requiring high valve spring pressures......for the most part. Chevy sure did that and still got beat by milder engines. Even the 440 Six Pack was mild. Had the Road Runner cam, but ground on a low taper design to save friction. I've always wondered what that would show on a dyno. Probably not much......it was a novel idea though.
 
Rebuilt the original 383 Mag in my 70 Charger at 180k just because.... Same with the 727 trany !
Horribly unreliable those Mopars !
 
One of the reasons I don't do many "car shows". Everyone had a car just like that, "only mine had a hemi".
We know what "our" motors, and cars can do, why argue with biased idiots.

I spoke with fellas who were around when the 340 cars were new. The one guy said " man, those 340 Darts were fast right out of the box" this was coming from a Ford guy. Those were the days when you could buy a fast car from the showroom and go to the track, and really they weren't that expensive. Best bang for the buck you could say. Also, keep in mind that 1970 fast isn't today's version of fast. if you look at the quarter mile stats for these cars, the times and trap speeds are impressive for the time.
 
Sounds like a real meathead, or as my grandpa used to call em: fathead.
 
He can say what he want, but there's no denying the 340 A-bodies beat an AWFUL lot of guys back in the day. One of the fastest factory setups I've ever ridden in was a 340 4spd Dart!
