Weiand Action Plus vs Edelbrock RPM

We all know on decent built/geared car the RPM is the way to go. I'm curious if it will offer any gain on MY car. As always, sharing with ya'll. I'll be posting results soon! :)
 
My car.… Stock 360 with .427 intake lift/204* @ 50. No headers, 2.45 gears, stock converter. Lets see in this situation if there is a difference.

It would be better even in a stock engine. Think about the stock stall speed and the power band of the intake. 1500-6500

I hope, but I'm really doubting any gain of notice. We'll see soon enough. 1st chance I get I'll be at the strip. As always, I'll post the E.T. slip :)

204 cam is not much different than stock - what's the seat timing- is this the Edelbrock or similar?

  • not much weight, if any - both aluminum
  • correct, it's barely above a stock 2bbl cam - split pattern cam has .427 on intake and .450 lift on exhaust.
  • stock manifolds/2.5 duals
  • already ran it and got a E.T. slip (1/4 mile) in it's previous state
Only thing i'm changing on this test is the intake. I want to see for myself, and share with you all :)

Yeah, a person never graduates from this school... forever learning :)
I guess I just self-entertain with these projects. Like this one, swapping intakes on a perfectly good running motor that performed very well considering the circumstances. But, I'll learn, and hopefully it helps somebody else make a decision as well....
 
This is a great test and you're going about it the correct way changing ONLY the manifold, then you/we will know exactly how much difference it makes. Always been curious about this myself, if Weiand happened to use Computational Fluid Dynamics to design their manifold it can't be that different from the Edelbrock in performance.
 
I shipped a RPM and IIRC it weighed 28 lbs. The cast iron was like 55. Hand that to the mailman in a flat rate game box! :rofl:

PS> Put both in a bucket of water and measure the rise of the water, Im sure they use the same alloy so you can weight them or use this for volume of AL.
 
Quick seat-of-the-pants test revealed nothing that I could tell. Granite, I don't drive the car very much, but I have a spot on a back road and it did the exact same mph as before. Of course, the ET slip will have the final say, and keeping in mind that each day at the track can very a tenth due to the weather, but we will see. Don't know when my next opportunity to go to the track will be, but i'll go there soon as I can.

did you post your cranking compression? with carb held open?
I did not post cranking compression because I'm not trouble shooting. The car ran great, exceeding all expectations. This test is strictly to see if the RPM can outperform the Action Plus on a car that is completely not set up for the 1/4 mile from bumper to bumper, such as mine :)
 
Correction to post 12. When I did the first quick test, I was up against the clock and it was starting to drizzle rain. I went out today (clear and sunny), and I take back the above statement in post 12. I think it does pull a little harder, and I tried it again at my favorite spot and I'd say (best I could tell) the speedometer was favoring the plus side of the previous intake by 1/2 mph?? lol. Again, we'll see when I can take it to the track. Until then, Peace :)
 
I have a weiand stealth manfold for a very similar build. Basically stock with a 340 replacement cam 209/220@ .050. It will have a 3.55 gear though. And a stock converter.
 
Port them both and so some comparisons too!!:)
 
Well, It went from a 14.14 down to a 14.11. Hard to say weather conditions. I know today wasn't good air. Typical this time of year. MPH was .5 slower (97.2 down to 96.77), 60 ft time went from 2.05 to 2.01. Both intakes gained a solid 20 mph from the 1/8 to finish.
Bottom line, I think there is a "slight" gain, but I think this shows it's not necessary to spend money to go from an Action Plus to a RPM on a real mild car. Obviously, the more "upgrades" to the car, the more it would favor the RPM.
 
As locomotion would say, “I’m my particular application.” As most parts go, you may find more HP in the *** part but it doesn’t mean you’ll go faster in the 1/4 mile.

From your stand point right now I’d call the parts equal in the 1/4 mike only because you have a lack of data over the course of time.

that was kind of my point in doing this project. If I gained a little, great (I think I did). Hopefully this will help somebody that is limited on money make a decision on an intake. Actually, the factory cast TQ intake is tough to beat, and can be bought on the cheap.

I'm that person, very much enjoy your threads. My 79 aspen has the factory 4bbl intake and I have been debating an upgrade, exactly the two manifolds tested in this shootout. I might just keep the factory manifold at this point.

Myself and a few other have been saying the factory intake is tough to beat for years now.

I am also in the same frame of mind. I actually enjoy the experimentation more than the racing. (But I do (or did) like the back alley night racing best. More racing, more action.)
I did at one point many years ago I tried to show how a 318 can be a good performer. But finances told me I could not continue the fun.

Daily driver duty rain or shine.

It has a Eddy 600 CFM and cheap headers on it from the PO who tried to hot rod it in his own way.

The eddy ain't bad when its not 115° and the fuel doesn't start boiling in the bowls. But this is Vegas and that is common in the summertime unfortunately.

Uh-oh, I was just thinking. If the difference between the two brands is a couple of hundredths, couldn't you get that same variation with two 'idenntical' weiands or edelbrocks due to casting variations?
