Im putting my engine and trans together tonight and that means installing the converter. How many times should the converter slide down over the shaft? I know I rotate it clock wise then counter clock wise but should there be two clunks or three?

agree w/ previous post. 2 sets of splines AND the front pump dogs. So technically 3, but you may hear one, or two, or three depending on how things line up.

A quick "check" is to make sure you can't fit your fingers between back of convertor and pump when you think it is fully engaged in pump.

if you can't pull the trans bellhousing up flush with the rear surface of engine block just by wiggling it a little, STOP! Do not use the trans bolts to draw the trans up to the block because it probably means the converter is not fully engaged into the front pump dogs. If you continue to draw it up with the bolts, the front pump and/ or converter neck will break.

2 clunks and the bolt faces should be about 1/2-3/4" behind the bell flange. The stator/reactor sort of floats in there independent of the turbine so when the pump tangs line up it slides right into the last splines of the turbine.

I've always heard the initial clunk , and then rotate to engage the second set of splines hense the second clunk. time after time after time. you might hear 15 or 20 if you are trying to force it

most definitely 2 solid clunks. I just did this a few days ago and I did not hear 3 , and my car is running and driving

Most definitely 3.
Seems I`ve always heard 3 on 727`s
Seems like I remember three on my turbo 400`s and turbo 350`s too, but been a while .
At any rate as long as its well behind the mating to block area u should be good to go, if u have heard 2 or 3.

I guess if you don't look inside the converter and see where it engages on the input shaft it could be , 3,4,5,6,7.........
