Were these a factory item on the hyd roller LA Magnum engines ??
If building a early model LA performance engine with a solid lifter cam should one of these be used ?

Yes, they are. Those timing chain tensioners are inexpensive and good to have on any engine. When they started to use them as a OEM part, I do t know.

Ok thank you of course Im going to use a premium double roller chain just wanted to know if still needed .

If you are building that gasser engine, that is going to rev to the moon, then I would personally not add that part. It is there to stabilize timing, by putting pressure on the chain on the slack side, but when you get the revs way up, and the chain is really flying, it might be more prone to break. A very few reports are out there of them breaking.

I'd be putting my money into a geared timing set for that gasser. More stable and durable than a chain.

I would not put one in, I had installed one and ran it for a couple of years. Pulled it apart to change pistons and the guide was in two pieces and the flat spring had eaten into the timing cover. It was NOT worn through! Smart people with real experience disagree about using one. I decided to try it and won’t do it again.

I must be one of those stupid people. I put one in my truck 230,000 miles ago. Still runs great. My street cars get them, no problems so far. Don't race anymore so don't know about that. Factory started to use them when the 3.9 came out in 1987. The all V8 engines got them few years later.

I’m stupid as well!
But also let it be known it is not a race ride.

I’ve torn into several V8 magnum engines and haven’t ever found one. I think they were only used on the V6. That being said, I put one on my 5.9 when I rebuilt it.

If you need a gear drive, run a gear drive. If you need a chain, include the tensioner.

If you don't know what you need, pm rustyratrod

They were standard in Opel CIH engines but were much better built than these and had a oil pressure operated tensioner. My 2-3 shift RPM was 7500-8000 RPM. and that was in a rally car that saw thousands of shifts per event and high engine revs for miles and miles. Never an issue. So yes, they can work fine. But I've also pulled one like this out of a 4.7 that fell apart in my hands. I am just not very impressed with this particular design.

The 2.7 had that set up too. Good luck finding one alive today. It's all in the way they are used. Plus some people have no idea what the word maintenance means.

I'm for a gear drive for what you are doing. You can run it under a stock timing cover. It won't make noise. Your cam timing will never change.
