Prices range from $39 on up. Supposedly for new ones. Also one of the ads says it won't fit my 72 scamp. Another part of the same ad says it will fit 318, 340s etc. I would like to get the right one the first time. Any info on your experiences would be appreciated. Thanks

They actually hit the header on my E body, Hooker 1 7/8" primary super comp headers and the stock starter did not.

Ok I hope I don't run onto that . I don't know if I can get the full size starter back in there .I hope don't have to take out the tie rod again.

there are 3 styles, 1 and 2 are the same but physically longer than the other in the stator, like 2 inches but both bolt up. the 3rd has the lugs on the opposite side via an extended plastic terminal that can be removed as needed. All will bolt up. The longer one has a little more power. I think the small one (black) is 1.1Kw and the longer one (red) was 1.3Kw?

It's the solenoid that hit the header, if they turned it 75* it would be perfect but no body does that.

I pulled one out of a junkyard. If nothing else pull a heat shield off for your new one. Those headers will be close to your starter. It will all fit, but you have to figure out how to maneuver it into place.

The bottom photo Phista posted.........that stud bracket unmounts, leaving the other two studs shown in the photo which might change some clearance problems. Also so far as I know the only difference in the newer 98--2000--01? etc are that they went to a "push on" flag terminal for the solenoid.

I recall SlantSixDan recommending an good OEM starter from the junkyard over the Chinese part store variety. Look at post #3 here:

Mini Starters on a Slant Six

It was posted in the Slant 6 sub-forum, but I believe the same starter will work V8s too. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

I have Patriot headers on my Duster with a mini starter from an 89 full size truck (I'm sure they are all the same). The headers are no problem, but I did remove the wiring adapter (short bus bars) and attach wires directly to studs on starter. Just insulate them so they don't short across. Mine has been on there for a couple years with no trouble. A mini starter is one of the best upgrades you can do from a "Bang for your Buck" point of view.

I think I got mine from DB Electrical and it fits my A-body with a 440. Mine's manual steering if that matters, I don't if power steering would get in the way or not.

Well I actually put the original starter back in after I tested it to make sure it was ok. Once I lifted the engine a couple of inches and the headers were loose and I got the right angle on it all went well. It was a little bit of work getting it wired up. If I do have to change it out I'll definitely be using a mini starter. I've heard some good things about DB Electrical.
Thanks

d-b is who I had build mine too, so far so good !

Unless you are a purist, shake that boat anchor, and install a mini.
Better starts, and less weight.
Hit the junk yards. The mini starter literally is on 50 different Chrysler cars.
Or hit the parts store and get one.

Local parts store. Get one for a 96 Dakota V6
Earlier in this thread I said that I put my original starter back in. Boy that was dumb! Now it has to be changed out. Lot of work taking the headers loose and dropping them down a bit. Of course you know what happens when you remove the end exhaust bolts on your heads. You get a flooded garage floor real quick! Well anyhow, I ordered a new mini starter through Amazon from DB Electric. $79 delivered to my door. And it was for a 96 dodge dakota v6. Thanks Mike . Should have listened you and the rest. Now I get to put it in tomorrow in the freezing cold .I have some heat in the garage but it's still awfully cold on the floor. Stupid , stupid, stupid! Oh Well, as they say "live and learn". Couldn't do this without all your help . Thanks much!

The starter is in and it works fantastic. Perfect fit. And lots of power. Worth every bit of laying on the cold floor and a little bit of cussing too!

If you junkyard pull (everyone here should), grab one from the latest V-8 truck you can w/ Magnum engine (~2001?). I recall the V-6 Magnum is (early Dakotas, Ram vans, ...). Cost me $10. I also pulled the battery and alt cables for my 65 Dart 273. I have factory exhaust, so can't comment. Anyway, low-risk to find what works, then buy a new one if you worry. Avoid rebuilt ones because the shops skimp. Better to rebuild a used one yourself, using quality parts. At least that's what I found w/ alternators and AC compressors. Rebuilders swap in worn parts that will just make the 1 yr warranty.
