I'm thinking about creating a 67-68-69 Dart registry. I would want it to be 100% online. The user would create a username and password and enter their own information, photos etc. An admin would authorize the entries to be sure there was no inappropriate information posted. The user could post as much or as little info about their car. I would want there to be a way for users or the general public to organize the information. I would not want to show any identifying information that could be used by identity thieves.

Oh and one last thing I cant pay you for your work. I'll give you credit. I will buy a domain and pay for hosting. If perhaps FABO could host it for free that would be great too.

It would be nice if the site could have a small revenue stream to pay for the domain and hosting.

Mostly the site would need to be simple and easy to maintain.

Any takers?

The problem with 'open' registrations is that people can enter data that has been faked.

I do all registrations via snail mail, it helps keep my costs down & I can usually tell if any data is bogus.

???!

Hey, make a website for me for free. It's going to be really complicated, require a ton of user input and feedback, and I want it to be completely autonomous. Oh, and it's a registry, so it has to contain information that could be used by identity thieves (because how else could we verify anything), so you have to edit that information out. Oh, and it has to be a pretty secure website, since because it's a registry site with user information held on the site it will likely be a target of hackers too. You know, because we have to collect information that could be used by identity thieves and we're going to store that on the website so it's completely online, because I don't want to have to do any work here.

And I said all your work had to be free right? Along with all of the ongoing technical support that will be needed, because it will need a ton being a complicated website like I've asked for. And that's assuming we don't get hacked or sued. But hopefully a registry of a bunch of cars, of which there aren't very many, will somehow have enough people register at a cost to pay for all the hosting fees because I don't want to pay those either. Because no doubt a large percentage of owners of these cars will want to pay me money to be in a registry that has no real benefit. It's not like there haven't been other registries for these cars that went belly up.

Good grief man.

I'm sorry, but that's the truth. What you're asking for requires a TON of work, and a TON of skill. And you're asking for it for free because you either don't understand what's actually involved, or don't respect the work necessary as being skilled or difficult.

It happens all the time with web designers, photographers, artists, etc. People think their work is somehow less valuable. You wouldn't ask your mechanic to do all your work for free as long as you gave him credit would you? Well, a professional web designer has more training and education than your average mechanic. A web designer that can pull off what you're asking for is going to be a real professional, not some amateur that wants to get their name out there.

So, why would you ask them for free labor? Seriously, a person that can pull off what you're asking could probably be making 6 figures out here as a web designer.

My girlfriend says thank you

When I first saw the post I went " hey hun here's something you might be ......... Never mind"

She has 4 degrees hanging on the wall and everyone thinks she should " do something for them for free, if I give you credit for it"

I sit in awe and watch her work on the computer and say " how da f did you do that?"

She's also a photographer and everyone with a cell phone and photochop thinks they're ansel adams

It takes training, skill and a knack for it, just like being a mechanic, painter, carpenter etc

I get that a professional web designer is just that, a professional. I get that there is a lot of work to create a site and the specifications I listed are not "simple". I just thought that perhaps there was a professional web designer and A-body enthusiast who might find the idea appealing and want to contribute.

I was mostly looking to gather info to see how many 67-69 Darts are still on the road and what options they had, like the
Hamtramck Historical is doing for 70 and up cars.

And for the record I never asked for users to pay a fee to contribute. My thoughts on
revenue generation was side bar adds or the like and not for personal gain just enough to help pay for the site.

I'm sure you're a good guy and your intentions were
honorable, but I don't think your reaction to my request was warranted.

This is all I'm going to say on the matter.

Have a great rest of your day and no hard feeling from me.

The registries on HH are for 1970 Hamtramck & LA built cars, nothing newer. Nothing older.
People have asked me to expand into other years, but what I do takes a lot of time as it is.

The 'found' section contains items for over 9000 cars still waiting to be claimed, for decades of cars from multiple plants.

HH has also remained ad free since it was started in 2005. What donations do not cover, I do.

No one wants to hit a site & be bombarded by ads.

Yes sir.

My wife has a degree in graphic design and currently works in marketing, where she does a ton of photography and graphic design work.

If she had a dollar for every time someone asked her to do something without realizing the complexity, time, effort, and skill needed to complete that request, neither one of us would have to work anymore.

She spent years learning to do what she does, works hard to learn new skills, and has a great share of her own talent. And most people don’t have a clue what’s really involved in what she does.

I don’t think you have the foggiest idea what you’re requesting. As in, not even a clue.

If I thought you did, I would’ve been even more direct. As it is, I still don’t think you understand what you’re talking about.

The irony is that you’re very clear about how little work YOU want to do, and how little money you’re willing to contribute. While advertising for someone that you basically expect to do ALL the work so that you can have a nice registry site. It’s ridiculous.

You run an amazing web site, and I can only imagine the amount of time and effort it takes you to maintain it.

Hamtramck Historical is an amazing resource for the Mopar enthusiasts. The archive section is incredible, and I’ve downloaded and referenced it more times than I can count.

It truly must be a labor of love for you, because there’s no way you get out of it anywhere near what you obviously put in. Thank you!

So what is the expense of a website, say for a business? advertising to let people know they`re out there?

Zero advertising expense.

All three of my sites are hosted for less than $200.00 a year. That includes hosting & domains.

The upkeep for me anyway, is mostly off-web. Filing cabinets, file folders, keeping the heat on in the records room, email account, etc.

Thanks for the compliments 72bluNblu.

It goes beyond love, it needs to be done so I do what I can.

I also get to learn a lot more than I ever would have known without outside help.

I am also blessed with a webmaster that volunteers his time.

HH is a very large grass roots effort built from the ground up with help from enthusiasts all over the world.

I had the ability & the idea.

It grew, but it does take constant attention.

Thanks, that answers half of what I`m seeking. What about initial design setup? nothing fancy, I know it`s a broad question, just curious and would like to have one done if affordable.

Sorry to the OP for the highjack.

Did you see the part about the webmaster that volunteers his time?

He handles all that for HH.

I have no clue what all that side takes, it is way over my head.

I have been a mechanic all my life and when I was young I fixed all my friends cars for free and now that I am 60 and ask any of them for help it's always the same I'm going out with my wife or I just can't do that or It's going to cost a thousand dollars because I'm a professional. F that there are no friends, ever

My Dad always said, you can count your good friends on one hand with three fingers cut off.

Highjack away. Enjoy!

You might want to check into some Google products, as they have public calendars and event posting type stuff for free that doesn't take any real knowledge of web design.
Maybe sort of a blog type thing can be adapted for your use.
I get website hosting for 2 domains and 100's of email accounts if needed with auto responders, junk filtering and all for 60 a year (30 every 6 mos) from 1and1.com
