Hey Folks,

Moving the Duster project along slow but sure. I'm now to the point where I am ready/need to tend to the rear end. Currently a peg leg 742 w/3.23's, going to a Suregrip unit (Dr Diff) and 3.91-4.11's. I should have no problem getting the center section out and back in once it's built, but I am pretty much clueless when it comes to setting up differentials. So I will need to have someone, or a shop, in the area do the set-up for me.

Anyone have any recommendations for a place in the suburbs of Chicago? Hoping to chat with and line up someplace up before I get the parts.

Thanks all,
Pat

IF..........you go with a 489 housing..get a crush sleave eliminator spacer

I hope this doesn't derail into a 489,741,742 debate, as usually happens. I agree locate a second third member and keep your original in tact.

Thanks folks. Good call on finding another chunk to have built and keep the 3.23 chunk intact.

MD68 - I got your message. Thanks again!

Be well folks,
Pat

.
Because some people think it is rhe strongest of rhe three.
However I perfer the 742 because it has the biggest inner pinion bearing of the three and does not use a crush sleave.
Having said that, any of the three will work just fine.
If you put a crush sleave eliminator in the 489 it is a lot better. I have had the crush sleave split with 4.88s and a 340 turning it.

Yeah it would be nice to get past the arguments over the questions you didn't ask lol obviously you've already bought the part so this is what you're going to do. this is your hobby you can either pay someone to do it or learn to do it yourself. It's not rocket science they've been doing it for 50 years or more. I'm sure you'll need a tool and I'm sure someone needs done it a million times can do it quick. Myself I've seen it done and I've had it done and the next time I'm just doing it myself from here on out. I'm tired of paying people 150 to $250 for which should only take an hour or so beyond the normal hooking everything else up that's straightforward.
My experience is I bought a 489 case and put brand new gears with a spool set up by a professional with the crush sleeve Eliminator kit and in less than 20 passes on the dragstrip blew the Caps off the back LOL I have a Dana now.

Ya, I'd loved to learn how to do it myself. The challenge is finding someone in the area to walk me through it. I have decided to go the route of keeping my 3.23 chunk as it is, and find another 742 to set up. Not in a big hurry as I plan on doing a front disk brake conversion next. Been focusing all my time getting the car to accelerate nicely. Now that it is, the "The Boss" made me promise to ditch the front drum set up after a few romps around town. After 29 years of marriage, I've come to appreciate her subtle suggestions!
