3 things that worry me in the "for sale". New member, low post count, Only post to sell. That doesnt mean they are no good, just means my antenna go up.

Lately, we have seen several people come to FABO trying to scam our members.

Usually, they will respond to "Wanted to Buy" ads by private message, giving an email address to respond to. They usually have recently joined FABO and have few or no posts.

If you respond they wont want payment by PayPal, and will say their PayPal account or dormant or something like that. They will almost always ask for a money order for payment.

I cannot advice strong enough that you don't send a money order to someone you don't know well. Sending a money order is like sending cash, there is very little you can do in the event you are scammed. This is why the scammers ask for money orders. They are easy to cash and all but impossible to stop payment on or do anything with if you get scammed. Think of it like leaving $100 bill on a bar and going to the bathroom. There is a good chance it wont be there where you come back and nobody will be able to help you.

I cannot stress strongly enough that you should not use Money Orders unless you know the person your sending the money to fairly well. In my personal opinion, the safest way is to use PayPal for all online transactions unless you know the person your sending money to. Its not perfect, but its the safest in my opinion.

We do what we can to protect FABO members, but in instances like this we cannot do a lot without your help. If you get a PM from someone like described above, let a staff member know right away and we will look into the member.

Thank you for listening.

ADDITIONAL INFO:
Scammers will usually ask you for the following info from the money order:
  • Sender's Name:
  • Reference #:
  • Amount Sent:
DO NOT GIVE IT TO THEM!

A scammer can take this info and pick up the money from anywhere in the world that sells those money orders. If they live at the address they gave you they don't need this info.

ok just so its fair for the other side just because I (or others) don't have a paypal account, and use money orders,( I hate giving money away, just to be able to get my money from them) doesn't make us scammers. to be fair about it, just saying

Thank you Joey!
I had several scam dogs that wanted the 318 running gear from my 74.
Paypal does not use Western Union. Those guys asked to send shipping fee to his truck driver, and he will add that to the total payment for all parts. NO SOUP FOR HIM!
I still send USPS money orders so that the Wife cannot see a charge on the credit card, but I let seller know ahead of time. Never had a problem with that.

X3!!!

Up here a money order costs more than PayPal fees and ive personally had damned near perfect counterfeit money orders. PayPal is by far the better choice between the 2 imo.
Cash is king though!

Unfortunately paypal has too many loopholes for buyers and basically no protection for sellers. Just one more reason I refuse to use it

I see many people here accepting money orders from buyers and thinking that it is a safe way to go. Not necessarily!
Recently someone tried to scam me out of a $950 item with a money order. I smelled a rat. Postal authorities and police told me the money order was no good. Doing it through the mail is federal mail fraud. Your bank will cash it and give you the money. But when the money order does not clear, you must pay it back to the bank. Crooks copy bank checks and print up phony money orders all the time.
When you take a money order, always wait for the money order to clear the bank before you turn your goods over to the buyer.

ask for a usps postal money order. You can cash them at the post office

Around here, our post office doesn't like them. They tell me to go to my bank. My bank then tells me to go to the post office. I just took one on a carburetor, because I know who it came from. Top notch guy. "I" had no worries, but once again, my post office and bank, neither one wanted to touch it. Since we use the same bank at work, that we do personally, I was able to get the branch manager to understand there was no funny stuff going on. Money orders are getting tougher to use, because of so much fraud.

It really sucks that we still cant do elecrtonic money transfers across the border.
I have no choice but to paypal.
But from now on its people i know that are straight shooters.

If I'm not mistaken, the post office is required to cash a US Postal Money order. If they don't you can file a formal complaint.

my post office is happy to cash my postal M.O.'s for me....as long as they have enough cash in their register to cover the amount

I went through reading about scammers on this thread. As I tend to be overly cautious, most info I pretty much already knew. BUT... now I think I will have a hard time selling or buying. I do not have paypal. I dont use debit or credit cards. I use cash. Yeah Ima old fashioned old fart anda country hick to boot. I do use computer and internet frequently - high tech redneck?
All of my online selling and buying to date have been in person with cash only.
I have sent money through walmart to family a few times and made an assumption. It would work for here also. After reading this thread and saw where someone said don't do that, I am now concerned I might have made a bad assumption.

When you send through walmart the seller that receives the money has to provide both the buyer and walmart with their name and state where the money goes to. And when the seller picks up the money they have to provide ID to walmart before they can receive any money. Also walmart has security cameras inside and outside. I really really thought this was even better than paypal. Obviously I am missing something.

Please, Please someone tell me what is wrong with my thinking on this.

I am a man of my word, but in todays society that means a man of turds. No one seems to have an ounce of integrity anymore. Makes it very very hard to trust anyone and I can't blame someone for not trusting me because they don't KNOW me. BUT I had to really laugh at someones post that said if this one guy said he gonna send you a bridge you better dam well expect to receive one real soon. That's me also, but how do the rest of you folks ever KNOW this. The suggestion of having feedback for buyers and sellers would be super great........ rrrrrrrrrrrrrrr... maybe not... say someone makes 10 accts and post on each one from the others - great seller timely great buyer great person - all bs lies but would look quite convincing. I found a hole in that thinking within seconds of typing it.. so... back to why is sending through walmart not a good idea? I still cant figure out why.

Just had a thought - Can the folks running this place verify ids of anyone wanting to buy and sell? I don't know how hard that would be, ...rrrrr....but dang just realized, they proly wouldn't wanna do that - what if they got a very good fake id and "said" they verified then one of us gets robbed by them,,, not good for the folks running site... i would not want that responsibility and pretty darn sure they dont either..

first few sales and purchases by a member - both money and product - routed through a well known trusted member from here???

Joey (the owner of this site) does a very good job and figuring out multiple ID's on this site and shuts them down....Also the feedback system on this site helps tremendously.....Also, I don't use paypal either....I am old fashioned......snail mail...as some call it......I use money orders for both buying and selling.....I have completed hundreds of transactions on this site....even though my feedback only shows about 50....not everyone leaves feedback or knows how to.....Yeah, some buyers wont use anything but paypal....that is their choice.....it is mine also not to use paypal's service......As far as Walmart money transfers go, you are correct.....They are very safe and instant....I have done it numerous times....... I just had one transaction where the guy didn't feel secure sending a money order so he did a Walmart to Walmart money transfer......I picked the payment up at my local Walmart within minutes......the buyer messages you with a 6 digit pin number that walmart gives him when he makes the money deposit......you tell them the pin number, and yes the receiver of the money has to provide photo ID and the amount of the transaction ....Also, sometimes the senders name too.....Walmart then pays you in cash....trouble free....and yes there are plenty of Cameras in Walmart.....In my opinion though they are a little pricy....for sending 1.00 to 50.00 I think it cost 4.50.....51.00 to 500.00 I think it costs about 9.00.....A postal M.O. and stamp costs about 2 bucks.....but to each their own.......just my 2 cents....not looking for an argument

I too am old school-- and I don't use PayPal as all it really does is protect the buyer, not the seller, and adds cost(in more ways than one) to the transaction. the feedback works pretty well in weeding out the undesirables as well. if anyone ever has a problem post the sellers name and ask questions before buying, might save a headache ior two for those that like Paypal more power to ya but I wont use it. I try to price my parts reasonable enough to where I cant add MORE to the cost just to cover the Paypal fees especially when I need the cash lets say to go buy another parts car locally they wont take paypal. and I need a cash? Paypal charges even more to send that money to me, another FEE pass thanks …..

I hope no one else wants to argue with you because I definitely don't wanna. I respect the opinions of old timers on here, they (including you in they) are very wise. AND any person that has lots of wisdom and freely gives up their time that they could be doing "their" stuff - and are spending their time instead - helps others by sharing their knowledge - should be given respect right off the bat. just my opinion. and thank you for your response... I would not be offended by anyone's honest response about me or my inquiries - sometimes the truth hurts but it is better to have truth than to wonder

It's two different arguments discussing buying on FABO and selling here. With reference to scammers who SELL on FABO: Those of you who are "cash only" buyers have no recourse to the seller who gives you (the buyer) nothing or not what you thought what you were buying. It would be idiotic to put cash in an envelope and mail it to a stranger. Walmart and western union are the same thing as sending cash. Paypal does tend to favor the buyer over the seller so that's the time to use it. Regular credit cards if the buyer will take them can do chargebacks if the seller rips you off. Postal money orders are harder to get back on a fraud claim. It's important to look at the sellers background and don't spend more than you can afford to lose.

all good info, save for one thing, the opinions posted by the majority seem to lean toward the broad brush as painting those of us who don't use paypal, as thieves or scammers and im defending the opposing side, don't paint us all with that brush:soapbox:

My wife works for the Royal Bank. I cannot send you an e-mail money transfer if you reside in the U.S.A.
I can pop a money order in the mail, payable in us funds.
