Power steering pump gasket for cap leaking. The old gasket is all dried up

Can I buy a new one or replace it with something else or make my own. It's for the round neck type power steering that is vented on a 72 Scamp. If anyone has any experience with this or ideas I sure could use them. Thanks much .

The caps for the Federal Pumps are tough to find. They were not sold separately by Chrysler. I got one from Firm Feel when I ordered my Stage II gear. You may have to make a gasket and experiment.

Not as hard to find as you may think.
I just sold one over on ebay last week, and there are currently a few more for sale, by other sellers.

The op might want to check it out, if he want's to go that route.
 
Am I wrong or is a sharp razor blade and a roll of cork in order here.
 
I have the cap. There must be a way to make a simple gasket for it. How do I know if I buy a used one on eBay that gasket is any better than the one on mine? Aren't the used ones 40 + years old maybe?

Body Person thanks. I have a piece of heavy duty rubber. An industrial type of rubber that should hold up to power steering fluid. I'm going to try that and see what happens. I'm hoping the thickness is ok. We'll see .
 
Go find yourself an old inner tube, or something sheet rubber, and cut yourself a piece, and stretch it over the inner diameter of the cap.
Then leave it as is, or super glue it down to inner top of the cap.
Experiment. You don't have a thing to loose.

If it was me, I would go to my favorite parts store and buy a roll of cork gasket. My roll is made by victor.
Cut a new gasket. It doesn't have to be perfect. Use something like a antifreeze lid for a pattern or whatever is close to what you need.

Ok the cork will hold up to the fluid but I'm not sure if it will hold up to opening and closing the cap on the pump. I might give it a try though .

Ya, i like the rubber idea better. I made a motorcycle gas cap gasket out of a radiator core support bushing once.
