Wiper Help....

There can be a little bit of a delicate balance there where you don't want to get too close to the fulcrum point (Pivot Point) and cause too much stress. That may be a case where you have to extend your throw arm. But it will be a bit of trial and error back and forth.

I'm thinking without really taking measurements but locking the wiper blade at one end and noting where the bar crosses and sweeping it over to attach other end of it sweet and noting where the bar crosses. I was even thinking of an experimental whole or two very small of course with a pop rivet? Just for some trial-and-error?

This is exactly why I like slotted holes sometimes, as it lets you set the geometry.


I'll get some exact measurements tonight. Length of the driver's side arm, how far pivot points are, etc.

In your experimenting, don't forget that you can move the wiper arm assy on the pivot on the outside to a point.
(not the point to where the wipers park on the cowl though:D)
 
Ok I changed the linkage points on the drivers side pivot. I had them wrong and now there right according to the book.

Both wipers are now only going 17” which is roughly 60%.

Here are the measurements I took.

Wiper motor lever is 1.75” so travel is 3.5”
Pivot to arm attachment is 3”
I’m getting 17” of stroke on wiper and I need roughly 10-13” more for a complete wipe.

I can’t change the motor lever. I do have room to move the motor to drivers side pivot up.

I'm sorry you didn't ask for my opinion but it seems to me that you have to move the holes closer to the fulcrum point. If you are initial throw from the motor has to be matched to your arms. Since you can't extend your motor you have to shorten your attachment points to the wiper arms?

Sorry I didn't mean to leave you out. I do value your opinion and expertise. I think I'm going to be able to work on it a little tonight. I'm going to move the motor and wiper to the farthest point and then pop off the linkage. I'll move the wiper and pinpoint where to install a new pivot point. Hopefully I'll be able to get what I need out of it?

Riddler, I went back and re-read your post(s) and I think part of the problem is you relocated the motor which changes the geometry. The only way I can see you gaining degrees of rotation for the left side without affecting the right side is to decrease the drivers side arm length to allow for more rotation and I'm not quite sure how you do that. And your other observation may be the correct one, that is how many times are you going to being driving the car in the rain? Your answer maybe to use RainX.

It'll probably be a deal where the motor is pointing all the way towards the driver side and the driver side windshield wiper at its full throw. I would almost think that if you could measure from the fulcrum point to the throw point of the motor that would be the same distance from the fulcrum point of the wiper to the throw of the wiper arms, i.e. matched?
 
And having given your post some more thought, I wonder if I have the same problem even though my motor location was very close to the stock location. Unfortunately my car is 45 miles away in the upholstery shop and its waaay too late for me to change anything, so for me it will be RainX
 
I just took a good look at the wiper diagram in the service manual. It seems to me to gain the angular rotation you desire you have to shorten the drive link by the amount you moved the motor. I believe you displaced the motor towards the drivers side. So lets say you moved the motor 2 inches toward the drivers side. That is effectively lengthing the drive 2 inches. To maintain the factory wiper geometry you need to remove 2 inches of the drive link length. At least that is how it looks to me in the service manual. Lengthening or shorting other parts will affect wiper blade rotation towards the windshield base and the A pillar. It can't gain in one direction and not the other. I think the drive link length is key.
 
After I changed the linkage both left and right need more. SO I'm still thinking moving the driver's side pivot point is what will work.

Riddler, I spoke to my fabricator today. He said what you need to verify is that the length of the link from the motor to drive link hasn’t been modified. He said it is critical for proper operation of the wipers. He also said shortening or lengthening the arm won’t affect the sweep length

I have changed the length of the arm from the motor to the driver side pivot. The arm from drivers side to passenger side hasn't changed. Also the Neon motor has a shorter lever on it. I don't have space where/how the motor is mounted to make the lever longer. I'm going to try and see if I can move the driver's side pivot location for the arm closer to the pivot. This should help me get a bit more movement out of the wipers.
