Anybody here have a Dachshund? Wife and I are thinking of adpoting a year old male.Anything I should no in advance. No other pets in the home. Only one grandkid on weekends. Dog will rarely be left alone all day long. We have had 3 boxers and a boston terrier in the past. So this breed would be all new to us.

no, but all my dogs have weiners !!

I had a miniature for years.....AWESOME dog!!!
Fearless, loyal and friendly.

He was a good boy and I still miss him...

I used to work at Wienerschnitzel...does that count? Every chick loves a wienerdog!

Der Wienerschnitzel would be a good name for the dog.

Squirrel killing machine. Quicker than they look. Great personality. Love people.
Hard to top a Boston Terrier

We have always had miniature dachshunds. We have numbers 6 and 7 now. They are wonderful, loyal, loving pets. They are great with kids, and always want to be in your lap. They are really smart. Even at one year old, you can still train one to match your lifestyle.
How could you say no to a face like this?

Need to be careful of there backs. Get or make doggie steps to get on and off furniture. They can be hard to house train. Just need to stay on top of it. I have had 2. Fun dogs.

I had to put down my best friend 2 yrs ago, he lost his back. I miss him terribly. Yes they are loving, loyal, and fear less. I lost my other 2 to a neighbors pit bull. We live out in the sticks. I would have killed the pits, but we have 2 other outside dogs and these people are low lifes, and I know they would kill out outside dogs.

Bred to chase rabbits down holes IIRC.

Friends had one a long time ago, was all about squirrels.

We had one. Now have a Chihuahua. Usually little dogs don't like little people. Ok so now everybody can hit the disagree button. But, this is my experience. I'll take a medium to large size dog any time over a little dog.

I have noticed many times many dogs of any size, can have a problem around children. Maybe because they are more down on their own level. Don't know.
I have been told the Dachsund that are the black with tan points tend to be more aggressive. I noticed that with mine, I had a red one the black, and a piebald. The red one was a sweety and the piebald close behind.

We just had to put our 15 year old "Monte" to sleep. I think they are one of the best breeds to have, unconditional love and loyalty.
Get him---------------

Actually they were bred for going after Badgers. Dachs means Badger in German. But those were standards and much larger than what we think of as a weiner dog.

I had 2... 1 Black/Tan 1 Piebald.... BEST DOGS EVER !

Mine were in fantastic shape . Rual was ripped with muscle... they would go backpacking with me and could cover miles of backcountry.
They do well in pairs. Keep them moving and running.
And socialize them.so they dont get cranky !

Inherited two with my wife. Tank has passed. He ate, barked, and pooped.(I still loved ya Tank) Rudy doesn't like kids, will bite fingers when giving a treat, and absolutely has to be watched at all times and never left alone in the house or he'll go on anything. He's my little man and I love him, BUT I would never seek out a problematic dog.
I'm on my third female whippit in my life and wouldn't recommend any other.. oh yeah and I inherited my wife's cat to which I don't like cats that much and for some reason this cat loves the hell out of me!??

Yesterday morning's lineup LOL at the top is Leah the second chance rescue dog from California whose came down with diabetes and we have been given an insulin shot twice a day for the last 2 years she's been blind for about a year-and-a-half. Sylo my whippet disloyal and loving on my wife as always! Then that damn cat! And my potato as I like to call him tucked in between us.
One more just a couple minutes ago I had to go get him...
