When does money outweigh sentimental value? 1968 notchback build thread

Those, sir, are AMAZING.

I'm sure they set you back a small fortune, but they look incredible. Just beautiful. It's a darn shame that we can't get 17" or 18" wheels that look like that mass produced. Or the police wheels. In offsets that actually fit an A-body, not like the 17" Year One stuff.

I would love to run an 18" replica of a police wheel with the original dog dish caps.

And your car just keeps looking better and better. Thanks for updating!
I agree they look great. Are you going to leave em with chrome lugs as is, or add 68 style bottle cap poverty caps to them?

Wheel vintiques makes steelies in 17 and 18 inch with Ford and GM center webs. I looked into those for my project, but wanted to run mopar small hubcaps (poverty caps) so i abandoned the idea. I love the look, its kinda what i wanted but with a 17" tire. I ended up just buying 15x7s and will just run them.

Also being that your buddy did the R&D with you on these, would he concider offering these to the mopar community?? He's got the CNC pattern for the web part of the wheel now. I would say he's sitting on a gold mine with that. I bet theres a big market for these. Light weight aluminum forgings that look like steelies. How much lighter are these than the steel ones they replaced ? They would be great. Not just A body, but B, C, and E body guys might want them. Heck they would look great on a mid 70s D150 pickup too. I would do up a set of 4 and have the rim lips painted red to mimic a redline tire.

I love 'em. Our cars are already too much alike... mine is just the darker green version and the drivetrain is a bit different.

I was contemplating something like this; was wondering what hoops were available. I was thinking 18x9/12 or 18x10 on front and 19x11-1/2 on the rear. I have seen 19" hoops that are stepped and take 18" centers! Is the shop that made these in your area?

I have a set of the '68 style poverty caps; I was wondering if they fit the same wheel as the dog dish caps you have. What is the ID of the hub cap lip that snaps onto the wheel?

Mike's shop is in Orange, CA. Hoops are endless anymore. You used to only see custom widths in 8, 9 1/2, 11. But he said anymore, anysize you want isn't an issue. However not sure about the half sizees

I actually sent him a 14" steel wheel and a dog dish for reference. And I think both poverty and dog dish caps are 9". Polished lip and caps would look nice.

He's at the nhra race this weekend in East St. Louis. I'll call him next week and see if he wants to pursue us lowly Mopar guys.

Yep 9" is mopar poverty cap. Means the same thing as dog dish cap. I just call em that. I think ford and gm were 11" thats why i abandoned the idea of using the wheel vintiques steelies.

So I have what I think is an issue with the rear leaf springs. They are supposed tHotchkis 24385 A body springs

Correct. Circle racing makes a close steel wheel but the centers are also 11".

Anyone know the correct size of this decal?

Talked to Mike today. He said if anyone wants a set, he'll definitely make em. As far as I know it's the only option for aluminum Chrysler steel wheels in anysize you want. Mike's been making wheels a long time and does an incredible job.

Sorry it took so long to get back to this thread. Been fighting leaf spring issues. Anyway contact:

So , just to be clear on this matter , is this an all aluminum wheel , or a half aluminum and half shell wheel ???
I was confused by the name for the wheel. Or is it an aluminum wheel made to look like a Mopar steel wheel ???

Am I to understand that there are classic car enthusiasts and owners criticizing others for wasting time and money?

These are all aluminum wheels. Forged aluminum centers interference fit into aluminum wheel hoops and welded.

As far as I know, there is no one making aluminum and steel wheels. Not welding them anyway.

LOL, not on the Internet! We all work hard to get to the point of having time and money. I'm trying to work on having it in spades.

Oh, I see. Very nice mod. I'm definitely doing that

If you are going big on the front tires, make sure you do the sub frame connectors and torque boxes also. If I jack up one corner of my car it will lift 3 wheels off the ground and the door gaps don't move.

I have already purchased S.F.C. torque boxes and fender/shock braces.I did not purchase the lower radiator support, I didn't think it was necessary.

Radiator support might not be needed, but you're already welding. What's another day of mock up and welding? I'd also suggest having the Kmember seam welded and reinforced. I think u said you're running QA1 uppers and lowers, otherwise I'd say lower control arm reinforcement also.
