Have any you tested these on the bench with a multimeter? If so, how, I have three and want to check them. I have a long running Thread on charging problems under Electrical. Thanks
 
Not sure why you don't just switch to the newer style regulator
 
I have two solid state ones that look like the original, and one reproduction mechanical. Thanks
 
A simple test is done using a bench top power supply with adjustable voltage, 3A or more current capability, a voltmeter and 12 volt bulb. The bulb is placed on the regulator FLD terminal, the other terminal on ground (regulator case). The power supply (+) is connected to regulator IGN, (-) to regulator case.

Test as follows: Use meter to monitor voltage at IGN to regulator case. Set supply voltage to 12V, the bulb, should be lit, increase voltage slowly, the bulb will go out when the voltage is increased to regulating point, typically a few tenths around 13.8V. The bulb should turn back on as voltage is reduced, a bit below the regulating point.

For new two field terminal regulators, the bulb is connected from FLD terminal to (+) power supply, not ground as in early regulator test.

Hi Dave, how the heck, are ya?

Egag, Mouser, Digikey, the smaller electronics supply, houses..........or find an old rheostat. You happen to have an alternator/ generator test set?

Thanks for all the input, how about the PS-28A, the price is affordable?
 
I have had good luck with Marlin P Jones. A quick check shows most of their supplies out of stock, at the moment. My 0-30V, 3A supply is 15 years old, works great. Adjustable current is a big help, it will hold that current with a short. I use it when checking wiring and electronics instead of battery. If I were to buy another, would get 10A unit. For large currents I use 20A 13.8V fixed supply for ignition and EFI development work.

LOL that is what I posted above. I can't speak for the quality of these, but the specs indicate it should be adequate. You might google the "model" and look for reviews
