The 1947 Dodge Build

-
On another thread about NOS 65 Candy canes being so expensive brings to mind about certain vendors thinking their stuff is made of gold. On my 47 the trim holding the two hood halves together is made of stamped steel then chrome plated. Mine has numerous pits and was painted over. I see the people who took over when Frank Mitchell died continued his legacy of thinking parts are made of gold. They have a NOS center hood trim on eBay described as “NOS but needing to be rechromed for a show car” for a measely $399.00 plus shipping.

A fellow FABO member and close friend put me in touch with a guy who has a pretty nice 47 Dodge that got creamed with a tree.

I contacted him and gave him a list of stuff I was looking for including the trim for the hood. He said this car had for the hood a hand fabricated stainless steel a PO had done and I could have it for $30! I looked at it and can’t tell the difference between mine in the picture on my phone and the one he has! Hmmm $30 or $399! I think we’ll go for the $30 stainless steel trim that will never pit or need rechroming!

Also bought from him the rear door handles which are in much better shape than my totally pitted handles, the driver’s fender trim which I was missing and the trunk lid which included the license plate light housing and handle, brake light assembly and DODGE emblem.

I won’t be using the brake light, bezel and DODGE script as I have a NOS one for a D25 (Canadian model) which I like better!

And also got a pair of correct headlight trim rings

Also picked up a pair of rocker panel trim, of which one was NOS and the other one excellent used. He also GAVE me a spare grill in outstanding shape and a nice passenger fender and a few other trinkets. Christmas in April!

I love your build. I admit my first car was a 49 chevy 2 door in 1964. I have never been anything really but Mopar, but at age 70 I have a yen for one, before I cash in or get to damn old to drive!!!! SHOOT me!!!! lol

Good for you and your build. There is so many parts out there that people want to get rid of. A friend of mine bought a 1960 Valiant. The seller told him he had an extra door to go with it. He got two wagon loads of extra parts!! Even some NOS mouldings!

It's really facinating to follow your build Don. I miss working on older cars. It's way much easier. It's the hunt for parts that takes time!

What company did you go through? I have an older car that needs some glass down the road a bit.

The company is called autoglassics and are on eBay. Through my ebay info, I received a call from them less than 10 minutes after I hit Buy It Now and paid for it because I didn't specify clear, green or smoked glass. Great customer service!

My wife and I are currently at my oldest son’s place here in the Netherlands. He is a member here as well but hasn’t been on for a really long time. The 47 will be his after I’m done with it so I just sent him a link so he can follow along with the build.

I finally got off my butt and combined a couple of boxes and made one long enough to fit the center section of the rear bumper in along with the other 4 pieces that makes up a rear bumper (and a front bumper too!). Each bumper consists of the center section, left and right outer sections and both bumper guards. Anyway it’s leaving by FedEx today going to Tri City Plating. The rear is gonna run about $1100 according to the web site about $100 more than a 5 piece front. Reason is the extra work in doing the writing in the center where it says FLUID DRIVE.

You can see wher the outer overlaps the center and the seam covered by the guard. It would have been easier to make the bumper all one piece and add the guards if desired. I’ll be using all stainless hardware when it goes back together.

You adopting any 57 year old kids?:)

WHOO HOO! Got a call from Tri City that the 5 piece rear bumper set from the 47 is done and will be on the way Mon. I told him I’M at the Mopar Nationals and he said if just wasn’t cost effective any more to come up from TN to the show so they cut back on a lot of shows including this one.

I can understand that! My 47’s running gear has not been started in years, if it even runs at all and no interior, sounds like a street rod project to me!

Got my rear bumper back from Tri City Plating. Before pic:

Needless to say with all new tail light and trunk panel bezels and now this gorgeous re-chromed bumper, I am pretty stoked. Now to get the 5 piece front bumper done!

My 47 needs to have a tilt steering wheel just because! So I will use what I have on hand - an 80 J Body tilt wheel with column shift. I found on eBay a slick little adapter to mate a 79 through early 80’s Chrysler tilt wheel column to a 5 Bolt Grant or 6 Bolt other manufacture steering wheel.

The horn button wire is routed from the spring-loaded clip on the turn signal through the adapter just like as was done on the original, ugly OEM steering wheel. I finally decided on the Grant 1139 model which is a 5 Bolt Wheel. Just out of curiosity I looked through the Grant adapters and couldn’t find anything for a Chrysler tilt wheel column - it’s no problem for a GM product of course! My wife even said it looks pretty nice with the built in rim cover - it’s a hand stitched leather cover. And it fits my adapter perfectly.

Just a minor update - got the front bumper off the 47, disassembled into it’s component pieces - main bar, left and right end bars and left and right bumper guards.

58B1F167-7D80-48BB-AF75-30A4BA79763B.jpeg

It’s all packed in a 62 in long box (length of the main bar) and waiting for a FedEx pickup to go to Tri City Plating. Another small piece of the puzzle done.

Looking good. Slow progress is still progress.

That looks beautiful Don. Should the text be any color or just chrome? I think red would look great.

Some people just leave it all chrome - A lot do paint the writing “Fluid Drive” part of the bumper in red as well as the chevrons on the bumper guards. One step ahead of you my friend - the Fluid Drive and bumper chevrons will get painted red before installation probably this winter!
